this movie gave me the courage to stand up to me mum and me dad, me dad kicked me out ever since i told him i wanted to do ballet, now im 34, but i am proud of myself, i didnt make it to the ballet but i am an acter now in pornographic films and have a lot of money and couldnt be happier
This in truth was the REAL 'audition' of Billy's young life. He had to win his dad over before he could ever have a chance for an audition with the Royal Ballet School. Those ballet judges were a piece of cake compared to his dad and his prejudice against ballet.
I think my mouth was probably dropped open the whole time.
I could probably watch this over and over and never be any less amazed. I love dancing (but it's a hobby, I've never taken lessons) and Billy is freaking awesome.
Seeing those two boys swing around on that rope while wearing dancing stuff was funny. :)
You're right, this is not ballet, but it is not supposed to be. Billy's teacher says at the beginning of the movie that it doesn't matter if he doesn't know anything about ballet technics, because he'll learn in time in the Royal ballet school. His dance is about expression, energy, not technic.
@teenovels first of all, it is *inuslting to English students out there that t=you had so many mistakes in that comment. *fool
secondly, I for one, am a professional ballerina, and I believe this is the sweetest and cutest thing I have seen. You are the insulting one as saying that because someone doesn't know how to do something, they shouldn't do it, where as Billy has a love for this, and shows his passion and emotions through dance. And if you are so clever then you would notice many cont.
of the moves Billy does are in face Ballet moves. I find it is people like you, who are so small minded and selfish that are the ones who ruin children's dreams.
This scene always brought tears to my eyes because the family is struggling so much at that point and the father feels he's about to lose it, and then it's kind of like Billy is almost auditioning for his father here and it hits the father that his kid has great talent and potential. Even though the father is kind of a macho guy, he does the right thing after that and supports Billy's quest to dance. Great movie.
If the actor who plays Billy never does anything else in his life worthwhile, at least he can always be proud of this (and I'm betting he'll do other great things, too.)
@MissVanD1 It was called 'When September Ends'. He's also in 'Jumper' with Hayden Christensen and 'Defiance' with Daniel Craig...oh yeah and he's playing Tintin in 'Tintin and the The Secret of the Unicorn'!! (I cant wait 4 that one!) :) x
t vlass when illy starts dancin his dad dont know what to think and then when you see his dads face... jackie then realises how much billy can dance brillant like dude...
And then his Dad does something he really doesn't feel is right, just to be able to give his son a *chance*. Too bad he's just a fictional character....
he starts with an Irish jig, a dance of defiance. When occupied by the English, they were forbidden to dance touching eachother, so the Irish danced with their arms at their sides. Any British father would have known exactly what that was.
its not a yorkshire accent. a yorkshire accent is totally different. it is a durham accent like a Geordie accent from newcastle in the north east of england. there are scores of english accents and if you tell a yorkshire man he sounds like a geordie he will not be happy and vice versa. people are very proud of their roots in the uk especially people from the north and quite right too.
Re: crystaliclake's question. The up-tempo piece was written by the film's composer Stephen Warbeck. Unfortunately I don't know the title of the piece since it's not on the soundtrack CD or listed in the end credits.

Stuart Wells-the actor who plays Billy's gay friend Michael-joined the British Army. He was apparently 17 when he did this role! He looked so much younger!!
@audie83 WOW! 17?? I thought he was much much younger too!! It's similar in ways to the late Jack Wild who looked much younger than he was as the Artful Dodger in the musical movie "Oliver!". :)
What's the name of the song in the beginning with the piano?
The second one is score from Stephen Warbeck, but I would like to know the first one!
