Kind of sad that one should need the approbation of Kurt "angry teen" Cobain to realize that Os Mutantes were genius. This stupid-ass was trying to make friends with Brazilians, not knowing what he was talking about. "According to what I've read", like he didn't even know their music. Mutantes have nothing to envy from Cobain and Nirvana, receiving a "compliment" from him is like a fly telling an eagle "yeah, heard you weren't too bad".
Think that you may be going just a bit overboard there. Arnaldo Baptista has a long history of mental illness - suffering nervous breakdowns and closing himself off from the world. At the time that this clip was shot, his life was not easy. To get messages from literally the most famous guy in music - saying that he loved his music and admired him - can't have hurt. This was long before the big revival in interest in Os Mutantes and the big reunions. Getting any
@Lewelltam ... sort of mention from Cobain in those days meant that the music that those people made suddenly became relevant - whether they were contemporaries, like Daniel Johnston or Shonen Knife, or from twenty/thirty years past. This was a long, long time before Youtube. Finding out about people was hard. You couldn't read endless blogs or download hundreds of rare albums on a whim. You couldn't order most of those sorts of albums, even if you did know about them and wanted to.
@Lewelltam ... In other words, don't turn a guy praising another guy who's hit hard times into a negative thing. I'm not that into Nirvana, but Cobain undoubtedly had cool, diverse tastes and he helped a lot of his favourite acts - acts from at least four different continents, home and abroad - to sell a fuckload more tickets and albums than they otherwise would have, just by namechecking them in interviews like this one. Good acts.
brazilian people needs strangers to be secure of the quality of theyr artists, like Cobain or Byrne with Tom Zé.. It´s a shame productors and media don´t give a shit. They preffer stupid and easy listening artist to make money, and people easly forget the real genius...
I had no idea Kurt even knew who Os Mutantes were. Yes, they were a very, very, very important Brasilian band! Excellent clip, Shaddoobie. Thanks so much for sharing it!
oldguy (1:16) : I was curious, did not know it was so. I did not know that Kurt Cobain of Nirvana had tried to talk to Arnaldo. John Lennon wrote for Arnaldo too. He wanted to make music with him. Then I realize that the message of Os Mutantes came to some people, these people somehow understand this message better than the Brazilians of the season.
I believe I have madea realistic translation. I hope you enjoy.
redhead woman (0:08): until 1998 no major label disclosed brazilian music to the world. it was given "alert" by sound, "mouth to mouth". (Brazilian way of saying that one person tells another who tells another ... and so on)
@benbynum The last guy said that they're more popular outside Brazil than inside and that the message resonated with the outsiders, they get it. I think the last guy talking may have been a member of Os Mutantes
Meio incoerente essa afirmação do gringo a respeito to Nirvana tocar no Rock in Rio.

rafael100presantana 2 months ago
