  • This works. I was doing this "before" there was a term for it called ESE but yes it does work and there's nothing to measure or weigh regarding your food. Basically you don't need as many calories as they would have you believe...I started out fasting for Spiritual reasons and noticed the weight loss as a plus and just "went with it" I'm on my way to my goal; the only thing that slows me up is the cravings I have around "that time of the month" so far I'm good because I really want this!!!

  • don't we all fast then? like, I stop eating at around 6 - 9 pm. Then I eat breakfast at 7 am. On weekends at 10 am to 1 pm lol.

  • I tried your "eat stop eat" did not work!

    I started at 6pm on a Saturday nght and did not eat until the next day Sunday at 6pm. I drank a lot of water and had no problems. Weight loss = 0 Inches lost = 0

    Sounded good....the body just holds on to the fat. Maybe if I went two days without eating it would work, but who wants to do that.

    I guess I will pick up some Slim-Fast and hit the treadmill asap.

    It's a program, not a "lose pounds immediately" gimmick, if you read the book you'll notice it says you need to do it once or twice a week and of course you need to combine it with exercise in order to work.

    And not for a few days or weeks, but as a LIFESTYLE.

  • @TheMaryTere You say "of course" like you need exercise to lose weight or fat for that matter. A proper dietary approach is way more efficient than exercising for losing fat. Losing weight is different than losing fat. Anyone can lose weight (fat,water,muscle,waste)

  • This kinda seems wrong to fast to lose weight... Pig you eat healthy and exersice daily you'll drop down to a healthier weight for your body size... Not everyone is the same some people are supposed to be bigger to stay healthy. If you want to lose weight talk to a doctor.

  • Also if you're fat you probably eat to cover up painful emotions. You have to learn to accept these painful stored emotions rather than eating to cover them up. So the ability to be fat can be a positive in that it protects us from painful emotional situations. So if you're eating to protect yourself from negative situations/people you might have to make major life changes to be comfortable emotionally enough to lose weight.

  • Being fat in my past I know of the huge neurotic games people play with food. Food is designed to satiate hunger nothing more. Heres a eureaka thought, eat when you're hungry and enjoy your food. If you're fat you can not eat for days and not be hungry. This freaks people out. If you get panicky about not eating for an entire day, eat a 150 calorie can of soup. There you ate. The body is smarter than you even if you're fat you will get hungry. Eat a good meal. It really is that simple.

  • There is a study(not sure of the name),that has basically proven that we need FAR fewer calories than we consume. The results are amazing,the aging process seems to slow down,less health problems,skin tone improvement,greater brain function,etc,just amazing results. My question is this-I'd like to try fasting,but what can I do about that empty feeling in my stomach that makes me feel sick when my stomach is empty?.Any ttricks,tips? I really want to try this-thanks.

  • @Sharone326 - sipping water, having an espresso coffee for breakfast & lunch times, a diet soda for morning & afternoon teas. I'm able to get through to around 6pm, then a dinner of lean meat & steam veggies, 9pm a supper of 2 egg omelette with veggies, the interesting thing is I'm used to this now & doing it daily, including a 30 min run AM, & resistance PM 5 days a week. This eating plan has stopped the constant thoughts throughout the day of "what am I going to eat today?" :)

  • @Sharone326 also chai tea or mandarin orange tea with stevia. Since stevia is really sweet, helps your teeth, and your liver and best of all it is a natural sugar with zero calories and hits those cravings hard. You can also have it with organic coffee its pretty bomb. enjoy ^.^

  • @Sharone326 I started doing this diet and on the fast days i'll have rose or lipton tea with some milk and a little bit of sugar either in the morning or night, so my body isn't completely deprived. also try lemon with water or lime.

  • Humans do continually evolve, but the rate at which that happens is very very slow. Homo sapiens date to 130k BC and overall approx 6mil BC the start of evolution from primate to homo sapiens. Compare that to the 10000BC marker for the start of agriculture and the change in diet towards grains (not to mention processed foods which appeared 100 years ago).

    That is enough to get me thinking at least.

    Anyway thanks Brad for your work on ESE. It works, it just requires a try ;)

    Your blood sugar will not be kept stable fasting, especially if you are hypogylcemic. Creat a SMALL calorie deficit to lose fat. Lift. Walk a bit. And eat food that will help anti- obesity gut flora.

    Google "gut flora obesity". Also goole "humans continually evolving." We are NOT the same as Paleo man. Art DeVany types have no validity. I just proved it. You will see many links.

  • ...we were never created to eat 3-6-8 meals per day with snacks in between. We were hunter gatherers...but we lost our way. We need to give our poor bodies a break from food and let real hunger happen.   • our ancestors went for many days on stretch without food. every animal has adapted to a certain way of life in their natural habitat. we humans often benefit from going without food.. i can attest to that fact, as i have suffered from fybromyalgia for three years. i could barely do anything until i started fasting once a month. now the affliction is almost gone, and i can exercise and function daily without pain.

  • Brad may not be a doctor, but he did graduate- level studies on precisely this subject, and he has the research (outside of his own) to back up his approach. I've checked. I've also used ESE to very good results. The catch is, you have to be weight- training 3x/week at moderate-to-high intensities.

  • I'll also point out that Dr. Oz may know his stuff, but he dumbs down his presentations to the public with the intention of making them accessible to the public. He also is generally speaking to Oprah's audiences, which are not representative of the general population. Since Oz doesn't discuss the specific studies he bases his statements on, it is impossible to verify them and to see if they would be applicable to all audiences or only to selected audiences.

  • Fasting may affect thyroid function, but it also boosts GH levels, which have a much more dramatic effect on the retention and potential for building lean muscle mass.

  • I get so tired of hearing about survival mechanisms making it impossible to lose weight! If you don't eat your body can slow the burning of body fat. But, it can not stop the fat from burning. It is a physical impossibility for life to continue without burning calories. So, fasting leads to weight loss. People don't lose weight because they refust to control themselves PERIOD

  • Dear sexylisagirl, If you cut your calories in half or even 60 percent, eat only complete protein foods like fish, eggs, meat, and work out at the same time, your muscles will grow BIGGER and you will get stronger. This "starvation mode" crap is an excuse for people who can't control their appetite enough to lose weight, and, people that listen to Dr oz almost never will lose weight.

  • I don't belive this either. Just cut down on the calorie inttake a day, fat intake and exercise atleast 3 times a week. I want to try to eat a lot healthier. I exercise atleast three times a week, walking atleast two miles each time, although it's been hard recently since it has been so cold the last couple weeks. now it's nice, so I hope to take walks as much as I can.

    how do you feel about 36-48 hour fasts once and a while? what about the whole metabolism thing> Ihave been onto this program, but everything I ever learned about the metab has scarred me a bit into thinking it is slowing down. More science please?
