Also my husband has a Juris Doctor in Law and makes 60K working for the government. How is that for awful? AND our beloved governor (gagging sound) will be cutting our health insurance, and his salary by 8%. He is kicking himself for not going to medical school; especially since he owes nearly 200k in student loans that he can't afford to pay back.
I have an English degree. The most I can make with this degree in Florida is around 30k if I'm extremely lucky. I've taught school at 27k, and did social work for 23.5K. For a 4 year degree, mine SUCKS. I did it because I love literature. I found out the hard way that I don't have the patience to teach. So now I am looking at going back for a two year certificate, and finding that most 2 year certificate programs will enable their graduates to make better money than I made with a 4 year degree.

I need ur help...Ok could u explain to me the difference between radiation therapy, radiologic technology, radiographer and an x ray technician? because i know i want to go to school for radio something....lol, but i just dont get what the difference between the are..plz help ASAP.
radiologic technology radiographer and xray tech are all the same thing. they are the techs that perform the exams( xrays cat scans fluroscoy) radiation therapy uses greater doses of radiation and is used fro the treatment of cancer.
Yes, it is Technologist, NOT technician. There IS a difference. I am sorry if any RT(R) was unprofessional enough to be hateful about it. It is a common error, and while it may be annoying there is no reason to be nasty about it. Educate people as to the correct term, respectfully, and move on.
I'm going to be a radiologist when i grow up. NOT maybe I will be . I'M in for the money and very very very interested in the work that I will be doing. The job sounds awesome.
Good friend of my family, known him for a long time is a Radiologist, he is the head of the department at the hospital. And i can tell you, (from visiting his multiple estates,) He makes ALOT more than $200,000 a year.
I thought the video was perfect for capturing the basic information surrounding the profession in radiological medicine, I'm ready to start the vast learning journey and move in this direction. Thanks for posting the clip.
The captioning is wrong. This part: "So after high school, roughly 15 years of training to be a technologist. After high school, you can go to various schools... "
should be "So after high school, roughly 15 years of training. To be a technologist, after high school, you can go to various schools...
@randyallengregg Sorry, but the gloves and aprons are for the techs and radiologists. We try to limit the exposure to a patient predominately by collimation (limiting the area exposed--the lighted area when we line up the exposure.) We shield the patients especially when in reproductive years, as well as children, since the radiation has greater effect on fast growing cells.
can anyone shed some light on how much you would make if u had a BA degree in rad tech? cuz i realize most rad tech programs are only associate degrees and are 2 yrs only. so whats the least/most i can expect with BA?
With a BA in standard x-ray you would make the average salery of an x-ray tech with the associates. How a radio tech can make even more is to shred into other modalities of x-ray such as CT, DEXA, MRI, MAMO, Ultrasound and Nuke Med. The more a tech can do the more marketable you are and the better chances of getting a high paying job as a tech. So if you get a BA in radiology study and get registered in a few of these other modalities.
thanks for the clarification. I was told if getting a BA, you are considered a technologist meaning u can manage technicians who only have an associates. But it is true the more you can do, the more likely your pay will be higher. right now im studying to become a technologist. and hopefully i can be a radiologist assistant. but idk..im still new to the field.
so how long does it take to become an x-ray tech?? is two years of college and then one year in the program?? or it's one year in college and one in the program??
@TheFaceUSA Where in IL? DuPage has one, as well as several JCs in the Chicago area. Peoria, QC, Bloomington, SIU apparently does. Most of the hospital based programs have migrated to JCs, but there still are some.
Go for additional modalities if you can, as early as you can. Makes you more employable, as well as boosting your pay scale.
I was wondering if after you shut the Xray machine OFF if the radiation still lingers around, or is that only ionizing radiation. I want to be a technician, but I dont want to be exposed to harmful amounts of radiation. If anyone has the answer and sources let me know.
I have read that radiology techs sufer from higher instances of radiation induced illnesses. I am interested, but dont want my health to suffer. What is the danger level of exposure when taking the Xray? They have lead vests, I have seen lead coated glasses/aprons/gloves/face shields etc. If no radiation penetrated the technician tehre would be no reason for all the protection. Please site sources. thanks
The only way for radiation from an x-ray to affect you in any way is to be exposed to constant radiation all the time, which is only possible in flouroscopy. When i mean extend period of time we are talking 30 minutes of constant radiation at 90 KVP and 90+ MAS. The government has stated that if all precautions are taken to reduce exposer after about 20 years you will only lose 1 week off your life. I am a radio tech for the USAF for the past year and my current dose is less the 1 rad.
there are lead protection items that techs wear the prevent radiation from penetrating into their body. however, the amount of radiation absorbed is very little anyway. but thats why there are methods like standing far away from the path and proper shielding. there are also radiationg monitoring devices like film badges to gauge the radiation a tech is taking in. usually anything above a 5 REM is considered dangerous. But regular techs ever so rarely take in more than .1 REM i think.
Why are there so many stupid comments and comment threads on this video? I don't get it. The video is fine and it's fairly accurate (though more accurate average salary stats can be found other places). I am a B.S. RT (R)(T) and I found it to be an OK video.
Nice video dude! I'm 19 now and will be getting my GED on the 16th. I took the practice test on the 2nd and scored 98% so I'm sure I'll do fine (it's required that applicants pass the practice test first where I live).
Anyways, I'm thinking about going to school and studying to become a radiological technologist sometime in the future, hope it all works out great. Sounds like a stable career with a good salary. Obviously not as good as an MD but more than enough to live comfortably. =)
True, $55,000 isnt all that great, but the job isnt that difficult $55,000 is good enough though, plus the benefits that you will get like medical etc.
I don't remember saying that $55,000 isn't all that great, if I did then I immediately apologize for being misunderstood lol! I've been living in a family of 3 with around $15,000 a year and we still get by just fine (granted we live in the country), $55,000 a year is just fantastic IMO and I would be MORE than comfortable with that, that can go a LONG ways to someone who doesn't waste it away on poor financial management. =)
@AnotherSchmoe i totally agree with you, i myself have been in the same living situation as yours, but with more siblings and the same amount of income as yours. to me i would cherish $55,000.
A job is a job. Right now I'm a mason Laborer and when i get out of high school with all my saved money I'm going to go to school to be a RadiologyTechy.
I'm 17 and I was thinking about going into the Field as a Radiology technician. I live in Paris,Texas and we have over 4 cancer research centers here.
your 17? go for it, by the time your 20 you'll be making at least 40,000 a year, more than enough than most kids your age make in a yea. think of this, its better than workin fast food. and this is a career you can build on, in 10 years you can make 200000 a year if you stay with it
Thanks for the information. I am looking to change careers as my past job as a body shop manager is in the dumps now and i will never see 55 let alone 85k a year, not bad for a drop out so im oing back to get my ged at 40 and am looking to help people while i am earning a living. Trying to find out as much as I can
