  • Super hero comics are referd to often with big titted wimen and buff men in skin wraped clothing, i myself living in scandinavia and actually want to draw some of these comics, but i want to show in story allso a new side of like spiderman, punisher and batman and so on, maybe i shuld take the bull by the horns and submitt my work to them, and se what happens... i feel like Marty McFly about this.

  • Okay, my two cents. I think one of the reasons that the Johnny DC line doesn't sell well is because of the style of art that editoral insists on using for these books (i.e. heavily cartoony/manga) instead of a regular art style. I can see a kid going with his dad to the LCS and turning down Brave and the Bold or Justice League because the covers practically scream "This is for Tots". Why not put David Finch on one of these books and tell him to tone down the female anatomy stuff? It'll sell.

  • @Morlock50 Personally, I'm not a big fan of Fitch's work. It's too muddy, the anatomy is funky and the storytelling can be hard to follow. The reason you had simpler, 'cartoonier' artists for the Johnny DC line is because first time comic book readers need simpler layouts and draftsmanship to help condition them to reading sequential art. A better example would have been Mark Bagley's work on "Ultimate Spider-man". Very solid work but easy for first-timers to read and follow. Elliott

  • @comicculturewarrior I see what you're saying. But keep in mind, when you and I started collecting, there was no Johnyy DC or Marvel Adventures to break us in. My first exposure to comic art was JR Jr. , Perez, and Byrne. I don't think I'd have touched a comic that looked like Shazam. I would have thought it was too babyish.

  • Dudes, put up a new vid already. It's almost October! sheesh.

  • Just wanted to say that i wipe my ass with that haunt comic. Sometimes i feel like my ass deserves better, but i use haunt anyway, since Todd's head is unavailable.

  • Let's face it guys, fucking fanboys are to blame for why comics today sux!!!! Unless women are naked or half naked or getting their heads blown off, the comic book community is not interested in our gender. Also in my humble opinion the comic book well has dried up and there is nothing NEW. Same ol' shit, nothing changes because fanboys haven't changed. So WTF it saddens me that the industry has gone to complete shit but FANBOYS you are why you keep giving the big two you fucking money!

  • I don't know if it's just me but the video starts almost at the end every time i go to view it.Maybe the powers that be are putting the squeeze on CCW.I guess people just hate the truth but maybe it's just me having this video problem.Great topics as always.

  • wow one guy who really isn't that good writing wise agrees with guys way to go

  • @InfamousNick07 Do you mean Kurt Busiek or me? Cuz if you mean Busiek, you're crazy. If you mean me, well...ok. Elliott

  • @comicculturewarrior Kurt Busiek i find his writing to be very lack luster and a lot of your complaints are aren't affecting a lot of comics right now

  • @InfamousNick07 LOL! Uh...okay. I am dazzled by your debating prowess. (The guy's only one of the most renowned writers in comics, but whatevs.) Elliott

  • @comicculturewarrior so? just because he's renowned doesn't mean it's good (example twilight) your complaints that comics are dark are somewhat true but the comics that are dark are being sold for that audience i didn't see marvel going hey kids go read kick-ass or dc going hey kids go read sand man it's not happening there sold for adult audience

  • @InfamousNick07 and you basically reaffirmed every point we made in the video. Thanks for that. ;) Elliott

  • @comicculturewarrior welcome one last thing comics aren't made for kids they are like movies and tv somethings a kid can handle other things aren't made for kids like walking dead

  • @InfamousNick07 so really, why bother creating comics for kids right? I mean, it's not like WE started reading them when we were young. And we'll be around FOREVER to keep the industry going. Oh wait... Elliott

  • @comicculturewarrior there are certain comics for kids the adventure series and the cartoon net work comics at dc. by the way i'm a teenager who read comics and i know tons of teenagers who read comics right now so i think the industry is fine.

  • @InfamousNick07 newsflash buddy: comics are selling less now than they have in decades. But I'm glad to hear you're not some 40-some year-old fanboy. ;) Elliott

  • @comicculturewarrior true but there surviving though tv, films and games. does it make them sell more no but it keeps them around longer and keep telling good stories.

  • @comicculturewarrior sorry meant Darwyn Cooke

  • @InfamousNick07 sure, cuz he only created DC NEW FRONTIER, one of the most popular mini-series ever, so popular that they made an animated film from it. Dude, who do you like anyway. I bet you just LOVE Mark Millar. Elliott

  • @comicculturewarrior not rally civil war got me into comics but since then i havn't re-rwad it so who knows if it's still good .i love writers like geoff johns and jms and ed brubaker writers can who tell really good stories and deal with issues. by the way i'm defending writers who kill characters for know reason o make character kill everything in their way. i'm saying that writers should be allowed to deal with issues that aren't just for kids.

  • @comicculturewarrior meant not defending writers who kill characters for know reason o make character kill everything in their way

  • Time for my RAGE-CAKES

Only only one point really. I think there's been a lot of great stories in mainstream superhero comics and they've been overshadowed by otheres. The Batwoman story is one I'd point to. Then the title of REBELS, Secret Six, Birds of Prey, and until the last few months ASM. Though I know a lot of my tastes are B-list and usually all my favorite books are hanging by a thread or get canceled I know there is quality out there.

  • I've always loved Todd McFarlane's work from way back in his Amazing days and I 'get' Jack Kirby.

As for Marvel. Man, it's sad. Everything revolves around their silly New Avengers books. I wouldn't mind so much but after that terrible Civil War everything follows it and (Again) it was terrible. The characters don't seem like themselves and Spider-man was trashed for all time at issue #2. It's not like you can undo that in the readers memories.

  • You,Darwyn, & Kurt are 100 % correct. Most mainstream books are pure junk. I'm down to 4 mainstream titles now, & 2 of those are going next week.Problem is I'm not finding much to replace them. Things I've been cancelling are things I really want to like. But I can't. I want to support some characters, but their titles are being turned into trash. A third GL book just means 6 more splash pages per month. The low quality will eventually kill the title,so DC will decide to kill of Hal Jordan again.

  • How did you replace the youtube watermark with your own.

  • Also, congrats for the army of darkness job, I love that series and I love CCW(so I hope the comics will be good.).

  • Thats weird that people think that of you. I see this show as 2 FANS(not untailented peopole) talking about comic books.

  • Thanks for making this video. As a DC fan since the late 80's, I have found it very difficult to want to buy new books after Infinite Crisis. You make the point that someone said that fanboys continue to buy books that they hate to keep current with the characters, but how could I when Superman is rarely in his own book, Batman is Dick Grayson, and Hal Jordan isn't Hal Jordan (he's pretty much Captain America)?

  • Oh and about the Todd thing I am by no means defending Mcfarlane but you can't hate one man and praise another man for doing almost the same thing. I mean Robert Kirkman for example, Invincible was once a good book but has diminished into nothing but a blood fest each issue. Walking Dead has dropped in quality also and he is writing Haunt of his own free will. Look I understand where you guys are coming from but you have to remember one mans trash is another treasure.

  • @30daysofdarkness "Look I understand where you guys are coming from but you have to remember one mans trash is another treasure. "

And I completely agree with you on that. I have my opinions just like you have yours. I think that KIrkman > McFarlane. That's my opinion. I never said my words were to be taken as gospel.

    J.

  • @comicculturewarrior

I can respect that, I just want to make some new friends I don't want people taken this stuff so seriously that we end up want to have each others neck over this.

  • I agree I think the mainstream books like Spiderman, X-men, Green lantern and so on need to tone down the violence in order for new readers to interested. Comics like you guys said seem to focued on shock value or against change. Thats why I've given up on DC there trying to much to bring the silver age back into thier company and adding more details into a characters origin.

  • Isn't it funny how most of the image artists did their best work under Marvel's editorial restrictions (except Larsen)?

  • Guys, I am going to tell you why an All-Ages comics aren't going to bring in new readers: BECAUSE KIDS DON'T READ COMICS ANYMORE! You have Waaay too much faith in fucking kids. All the fucking movie adaptations and Tiny Titans books and if every DC, Marvel, Image went All-Ages tomorrow, it still wouldn't bring in new readers. And if they did go all-ages, i'd stop reading.

  • @johnnyhorror92182 so what you're saying is if comics were more like in the 70's and early eighties you'd drop the books? You do realize that's when comics had their greatest increase in readership. I don't get this hate on books that EVERYONE can read. Elliott

  • @comicculturewarrior If I wanted to read comics from the 70's, I'd read comics from the 70's. Now, if all books were All-Ages then everyone WOULD be able to read them, but it doesn't mean everyone WILL read them. You guys seem to be railing against what Society as a whole finds acceptable in media today. The same way that Movies and Music are more explicit than they were 30 years ago, so do other forms of media. It's a sign of the times, man.

  • @johnnyhorror92182 Ummm...no. It's not a 'sign of the times.' YOU want more explicit music and media. (Not that there's anything wrong with that.) But if EVERYONE wanted explicit violence and such in their entertainment then Disney's 'family fare' wouldn't make them BILLIONS OF DOLLARS. Again, if YOU don't want to read those books, I won't quarrel with you. But to say that's what EVERYONE wants is just plain wrong. Why else are comics DYING? Elliott

  • @comicculturewarrior Alirght! I'm done! I'll keep my Infinite Crisis & Blackest Night & Tank Girl & so on because apparently, I'm a violent sexually perverse Fanboy.

  • @johnnyhorror92182 Now don't go puttin' words in my mouth JH. I'm just saying that you're making the assertion that EVERYBODY (i.e. 'society') wants comics the way YOU want them, which is the current status quo. The point of this video is that some very respected creators don't care for the way comics are currently. I'm not calling you a 'violent sexually perverse fanboy.' Elliott

  • That pisses me off about the Wonder Woman series, that could have been. They would have been amazing! Honestly I think DC just tolerates the character and doesn't really give a shit, if that's how they're going to act. Even with the JMS storyline right now it feels half assed....

Good luck on your story Elliot, and Jose you had me in stitches at the end. XD

  • are you guys going to do a morning glories review, i thought the book was great for a first issue

  • @PILKK90 Yes, it's on our 'to do' list. Look for it in the coming weeks. Elliott

  • I misses why Nick Fury became a black man??

  • Jose's angry fanboy voice sounds like Matt Daaamon :)

  • I think THIS is what my "MAKE A WISH" will address.

Maybe a Wonder Woman and the Justice League storyline in "Sensation Comics".

Then politely ask them to go with Darwyn Cooke's series.

    And maybe that WW manga...

I'm the GD Miracle Machine! LAY IT ON ME!!!1

  • Hell, Darwyn Cooke's Catwoman had alot of shady stuff in it.

But it still managed to remain tasteful, and put everything to good use.

  • Keep it PG-13 I say.

Crisis crossover's can be welcomed exceptions because they're special events.

THERE IS NO SHOCK VALUE IF IT'S HAPPENING 24/7!!

  • Paul Dini's oversized soft-covers are very mature while being for all ages.

Mark Millar's stuff sells like candy, unfortunately.

    "It works"

  • that is true. right now the state of the industry has become corporate in the sense that it is more about the bottom line and the shareholders than the fans. Money def does talk now more than ever. It is a language that DC and Marvel will always be speaking.

  • I love the Jor-El anaology, but who is General Zod? Quesada?

  • Part of the problem is that the price of comics now are out of reach of most younger people. They need tp target an older audience with more disposable income. But you are correct, a lot of the stuff being produced today lacks the quality of both art/writing of the Claremont/Byrne era of Xmen. There are many writers who will not participate in this trend, and hopefully like all the other trends, this one will pass as well. Thumbs up.

  • @kortick50 Also, there even though the Dark Phoenix saga can be enjoyed by all ages, there are layers to the stories, and some mature themes subtely included beyond the plot.

  • Well If one thing you guys are very expressive. But I must say good video I would have loved a Wonderwoman book that was aimed at younger girls, Marvel is beyond help as far as I am concerned destroying the Spider-man books and now making Black Panther the new man without fear and just for no apparent reason made Daredevil evil. DC Brightest Days is just really boring and I am sorry but JMS on Superman and Wonderwoman is terribly boring me right now.

  • @30daysofdarkness Agree with you on Superman and Wonder Woman. My two favorite characters and I dropped both titles this month due to plots that went nowhere and less than spectacular artwork. And the first JMS issue of both titles looked so promising too. Oh well.

  • Todd "The MAN" McFarlane Rules and Jose is just a HUGE ....Naw man Im kidding! I agree 100% with what you have said. Hopefully someone in the industry watches and learns from this video as well as those who still spend money buying garbage titles. Good Job Guys Continue on nuff said.

  • There is something out there for everyone these days. All of it is easily available at any LCS. Even among superhero comics there are very good ones being produced (Fantastic Four, Invincible and Batman & Robin come to mind).

Ulimately (pun intended), the people have voted with their wallets and they disagree with you guys. I don't see this changing any time soon.

  • @dangerfeild4Life

    *ultimately (pun fail)

  • @dangerfeild4Life can't disagree with you there. Le sigh. E.

  • WHAT DID U GUYS THINK ABOUT THE NEW CARTOON WONDER WOMAN MOVIE

  • @queenginbell WHY ARE YOU SHOUTING!? E.

  • @comicculturewarrior I LIKE 2 USE ALL CAPS

  • have you guys reviewed civil war before because i thought it was terrible and wanted to know what you guys thought of it?

  • @kyledubrule yeah, we talked about it during the event. You can go back and check some vids from last season, but I'm sure we pretty much agree. :) Elliott
