Robsie, I talked to him about that tuning style over the summer and he said he didn't really know the proper name for it. I believe the folks who taught him called it crosstuning. I tune (for D) DADF#AD (open D) and it works pretty well for some blues. I still don't know exactly what that tuning style is though... I've been trying to match it, but hell... maybe it's just the guitar.
Mr Holmes taught me to play in devil E crosstuning . The true Bentonia style . He is the best guitar teacher in the world! And his cafe is the best place on earth! I wish I could have move in the Blue Front Cafe forever, and never leave!

The best I can say in actual guitar theory is E- minor , but he still tunes it in an unusual way. You should visit Bentonia and he will show you !
