I grew up on a solid jazz foundation thanx to my pops. One when I was young, him and I went on a drive and he put on this song on and I was like "...What the heck is this?" From that day, this tune reminds me of one of the greatest men who ever lived, my dad! Big up to Vince Guaraldi for a great classic and much thanx to TLDavis1230 for posting this ; ) One Love!
Alshouse, I agree with you. Mom always said, "Imitation is the highest form of flattery," and in order to have a good copy, you have to have a solid original. Mr. Benoit's arrangement of this song is wonderfully mellow and pays great homage to the marvelous work of Mr. Guaraldi. I'm sure Vince would be proud to have been imitated in such a way. Mr. B did great honor to this song. Love this version.
What's missing from this tribute piece to Vince Guaraldi is the image of a certain beagle dancing to the tune that the jazzier portion of the original brings to mind when listening and comparing. I like both versions, but they take me to different pastoral places.
Why are people trying to compare piano players oriented with different styles of jazz? It's most evident in the improvisation. Vince Guaraldi has a lot of bebop influence in the way he solos while Benoit's style of both improvising and arranging reflect more modern, almost fusion styles. Believe me, I've been playing piano for fifteen years, jazz for the last eight, and I wish I could have a fraction of the talent of either of the two.
I wouldn't necessarily say better or worse, but different in a great way. I like the uptempo, also I think that a lot of the Guaraldi Peanut's work was somewhat reserved when compared to his work alone, or with, say, Bole Sete or others.
I like VG's version...but I like this one more...there's an easier "flow" about this one I think....a certain "gelling" about it. But both versions are brilliant.
@MoosicandCritters DB may be the only pianist I trust to honor Vince's music appropriately! This is the 5th of over 40 songs on my DB playlist, oops, just saw my last comment here from last April! I'm up to 625 playlists covering over 400 artists now! Teri - thanks for a chance to hear this again. Vince is one of my true musical heroes - a genius who changed the world in such a beautiful way with his music! (Our trees are budding out already & my flowers are blooming !!) chuck
@alshouse I agree actually! Another fine example of when a sample surpassed an original is with Grover Washington Jr.'s "Take Five". Truly a worthy rendition! (R.I.P Grover Washington Jr.)

Love it. Too bad there's a glitch in the music toward the beginning. Reload.

This seems to capture the feel of the tune as well as any version I have heard, --right up there with sound orchestral's version.
