im from London, i have NO Irish blood in me, but i am a history teacher and also and avid researcher on european and Irish history. WE have not got one leg to stand on. its actually 800 years and still counting. the irish have seen their population wiped in half in the 17th century 1.2m slaves to the new world FAR MORE THAN AFRICANS IN THAT CENTURY, in the 19thC over 1.5 m starved to death by us NOT A FAMINE, and 1.8 m forced to migrate.

Dont confuse religion with nationalism.The Irish happened to be Catholic before the Protestant English and Dissenter Scots began to settle here but it wasnt the fact that 'Protestants' were ruling Ireland which caused the conflict it was the fact that 'foreigners' were ruling Ireland,which is still the case in the North.Its not whether you're Catholic or Protestant it's what that represents,Irish or British.If we can just get rid of the Brits then we can deal with the horrible Catholic problem!

However, in a protracted cycle of violence and hate the only possibility for hope (as far as I can see) is that both sides become self-conscious of what they are doing to the other. What was upsetting me is the banality, the everydayness and the ignorance of ordinary people playing their roles in the perpetuation of tragic situations, the world over.

You know the only good thing about this conflict in Ireland is that we ( Americans) are not involved in this war and should never become involved. The protestants and catholics over there have been killing each other for centuries because old anciet blood fueds, there is nothing anyone can restore peace to that land, catholics and protestants in Ireland have always been enemies just like Jews and muslims, that is just the way things are.

@benjsy and another thing the battle of the boyne wasnt to prevent it from becoming apart of republic of ireland because the whole of ireland was occupied by the british at that time it was to prevent it from becoming catholic the ancestors of the british in NI fought against an english king in 1690,, and no the out come of 1690 wasnt NI as NI didnt have its own boaders until the 1920's please go learn your own history

More 1 sided stuff on Ireland, the Irish goverment agreed to sign over the 6 counties to the British and Northern Ireland was born, the IRA had border attacks on Northern Ireland since 1921, there was always going to be trouble and it worked BOTH ways.
