I'm flying from Texas to England in December to see Marc on my birthday... I've seen him once solo and once with Soft Cell... and this song is one of the main reasons for the trans-atlantic trek. There's no way he can do a 30-year revue w/out Jacky
for what it's worth, i am not a mad MA fan, i don't particularly like cabaret or camp, but i can appreciate brel. i can however appreciate talent, and this is marvellous. as someone else said on an earlier post, it IS different to the original, but almond's respect of brel is obvious, and this is a great performance.
Wow...this is quite an interesting explosion of overly-pompous drek. Almonds voice is pretty much shot (and pretty sharp much of the song), the arrangement is just goofy-retarded...and the "come back Jacky" thing suggests that maybe nobody who put this massacre together even bothered to pay any attention to the lyrics.
I can see why this would be very powerful to see in concert, but that doesn't mean it's not garbage.
Oh now now, obviously isn't the Brel original, but I really enjoy this interesting re arrangement. It doesn't insult the original, it simply puts a new twist on it.
Marc is fantastic, I saw him in Dublic last February and he had the audience in the palm of his hand...the man could walk on water...see him live, you won't forget it.
I disagree completely - Marc Almond has a completely unique style and JACKY suits him to a T. I don't think he ever sang better than at this TWELVE YEARS OF TEARS concert - and remember, this is 1993, YEARS before the dreaded Autotune could make even the Spice Girls sound like they could hold a note!
We'll just have to agree to disagree... I posted it because I think the arrangement is BRILLIANT - esp. as it was done at a time when virtually no other pop or rock act would dare to do anything this 'cabaret' inspired! His TENEMENT SYMPHONY album is a classic.
@deathnotesuicide .... years on but believe me this song was excellent at the time. Never mind the arrangement, his voice etc. I was at the concert, which is a million times better than anything you could EVER find on youtube. I've seen hime live other times too, but that twelve years of tears concert will take some beating. Especially the piano medley.
This song was performed like this, his voice is excellent and the music was excellent. See him live (not on youtube) and you'll understand.
The Brel and Walker recordings of this are superb, but I don't know how you can be a fan of those and not also enjoy Almond's. It's a superb interpretation; he really understands what the song's about and gets it right.
I really can't stand the synths! Again...i feel that his vocals are fine but the arrangement just sounds...too over the top...unlike walkers arrangement...walkers arrangement only differs slightly from Brels amazing song! It's the style that i cant stand...i enjoy a more "classic" sound i suppose.
the concert was amazing, every time I go to see Marc perform I say it was amazing, but this was a very special night, he was on top form and when everyone sang happy birthday he was very emotional, which wss really sweet. I'me going to see him on the 8th of December, which i'me really looking forward to.
the man is a complete genius.

What I like about Brel's music? Each artist who sings his masterpieces, adds their own little touch to it.

I do not think it is possible to do this song better than Marc Almond did it.

---This might be a kind of "Variete " or so
maybe people like it because of the performance and the half naked dance woman----
But : this has really nothing to do with B R E L
and his intentions and his art and so on.. this is abuse....
