Great shot. I don't think he pushed Doyle, it was more like he "arsed" him out of the way! Kerry probably were the better team on the day and were unlucky to lose. Saying that, they were very fortunate in some of the years immediately prior to that v Roscommon & Offaly so the loss of 5-in-a-row wasn't a total injustice. Much as it pains me as a proud Kerryman, Darby's jumps of joy are always priceless to watch. This must be the ultimate Gaelic Football moment of all time.
Darby ended up potless. He had a small room under Busaras in the end, and could be seen begging for pennies outside Clerys. As proud Dubs, we were only too happy to oblige him with the dregs of our pints and some half eaten Sambos. He was eventually kicked off his turf under Busaras by IMMIGRANTS.
You bloody bowsie jackeen, typical! As a matter of fact he is now the proprietor of one of the most successful hostelries in the country, and has achieved a lot more than your whelp arse.
Potless I tells you. Potless. I heard he got trials at United. Or was it The High Court, I think it was the latter. He couldn't make the rent on his cardboard. The looder.
not only was it a momentuous, historic goal which obv prevented kerry from achievin the 1st 5-in-a-row ever, but boy god was it some strike too..dipping right into the top corner..a bute
the team now should watch this video and get some tips from it, cos they were an abseloute shambles, 2 matches 2 defeats, hopefully richie connor can do sometin,
It is a memory cemented into my grey matter for ever. I was in the Canal End with Martin Hanamy. Who would ever know that he (Martin) would go on to be great All Ireland hurling star himself. We both went ballistic after watching the back of the net rattle. Because it was jammed packed in the Canal end and the goal was scored at the Hill end the only way we knew it was an actual goal, within that fleeting moment, was the shake of the net - WHAT A GOAL!
... but I have to say, in case somebody gives out to me, coz I have several Offaly colleagues... ye did have a great team back then... but what happened after the mid eighties?
However, Seamus must be unable to leave the door of his house without a pint of stout being thrust into his hand. I would not swap with being him for all the tea in China... such is his legend that he can go nowhere without a pint of stout being thrust into his hand... and it would be rude to refuse...
I've said it before and I'll say it again... this is like looking at some random interloper that managed to slay Goliath. I'm a Dub, not a Kerryman, but still I feel cheated. This Kerry team was the finest team of footballers that ever existed - back me up here, Kerrymen - and it's a travesty that they didn't get the five in a row. I remember watching this match when I was a kid and my relations from Wtaerford, Tipperary and Dublin were upset that Kerry didn't win.
Massive underdogs.. Vs greatest team ever going for 5 in a row. Sub gets ball from an angle and hammers it into corner over the keeper to win it. No contest.
Ball dropping in the goal area....two strong footballers jostling for position...Darby wins possession....back of the net. That`s it! A lot of rubbish talked about wee nudges, pushes...Gaelic`s a man`s game. You win your ball, you hold your ground. Darby`s goal arguably the best of all in a football final. Disgraceful that he wasn`t awarded the goal of the year. Seamus, you`re the man!
pushed or not,it was a fantastic goal,a fuckin brillant goal!offaly had run kerry very close in previous meetings, this day was theirs...that kerry team was goin for 5 in a row was the best panel of players ever assembeled.todays kerry team wouldnt come near to touchin them.BUT WHAT ABOUT THE COMMENTRY: MICHEAL O HEIR GENIUS RIP.
good job on this video! my names Jennifer, kinda feelin bored if any1 wants to join me on cam or wana chat i will be signed on at __ FriendlyFlirts(.COM) __ my user ID there is Jennifer_euzwpswhsmvj chat soon xx its FR33 to j0in! mwah
Matt Connor kicked yer Dublin asses off Croke Park until he broke his back at 24. Top scorer in the country for 4 years on the trot (1980 - 1983 inclusive). It takes a great team to beat a great team!
yeah yeah yeah...and we went on to lose the following munster final too, but then won three more All Irelands in a row...thats what defines that team for me...they didnt call it a day after '82! Every era theres a team that beats Kerry, but we always come back!!
ok, so who sent this absolutely random team to beat kerry? was it god or the devil? i actually remember this happening and was absolutely DISGUSTED that such an absolutely legendary team lost to these randomers, and i'm a dub, by the way. dublin and kerry of this era were the finest gaa teams that ever were
re : narrybubbles - Yeah ure a typical Dublin ass that`ll sit back and admire them. Leave us to go out and beat them, you sad fucker! We won Leinster for 3 years in a row up to `82 and won two All-Irelands in the 70`s dummy!
not a chance man, dublin couldnt get near offaly from 80-82, for a small county like us to produce a team like that, and kerry were far better than dublin, we were as good as kerry onlt the team fell apart after 82
No push on the back either. Offaly deserved that all Ireland, they had been coming since the late '70s. Looks like we're back to the nightmare years pre Tommy Lyons now :(
Any chance we'd get a goalie who can catch balls and not give away vital goals this year?
I was at the match in the Hogan stand near the Hill. Even though Kerry lost being sure we would win it and make history, it was a fantastic goal and a fantastic final.
I've just shown this video to my Offaly-born father (a technophobe, but that's neither here nor there) and he was just as excited to watch it as he was back in 1982. IIRC that was the last of the series of great Kerry v Offaly matches. Wouldn't mind watching some of the 1980 All-Ireland semi again - Matt Connor at his majestic best!
and poor charlie ! bad dose ! sure were still the best footballing county so how bad ! Chiarrai for sam 35 this year ! c'island desmonds for division 1,intermediate and north kerry !!!
shite ?? its by far the best sports in the world ! everything about it is brilliant ! the anticipation, search for tickets on all ireland day,the banter, its pure love and passion ! unlike soccer which is ruined by greed for money !!

This is absolutely one of the best pieces of footage I've ever seen... It always gives me goosebumps when I watch it! Again I say, is there a goal left in this game?
Great moment (I voted for it when this show was aired a few years ago). I was born 2 years later but it one of my favourite GAA moments ever. Nice description of that day in your post as well. :-)

Forget about the Premier League, F1 and the rest of that corporate bullshit, this is kind of thing you watch sport for.
