I just got a 3g also at $199 on Sat. but I think you can return it within 30 days and just pay the Apple 10% restock value and you possibly, depending on the store, won't pay another activation fee if you were unsatisfied with the phone and go get the new one. That's what I'm going to do. : )

there are other differences that the new software will not do.

such as the better camera. it is a 3mp plus auto focus PLUS a video camera. and the biggest thing for me is the better battery life. just upgrading to the 3.0 firmware will not give an iphone 3g those features that the iphone 3gs has.
