  • hi, can u check out my videos? need some ideas youtube/user/dogassproductions

  • you forgot to take the price ticket of your wagon.

  • @michaelfokias Thats because they were for sale like most things there :-)

  • @legosluigi :-)

  • looks amazing

  • can someone tell me where i can get a set like this?

  • I've got 3.

  • I doubt it, but does Hornby make the train and transformer for the U.S.? =( i'd really like one of these.

  • I wonder if u can double head these using one controller or even 2 seperate ones?!

  • Thats something the model shop has not tried so I am not sure if it would work You would need to use one control unit I am sure of that but I don't know if it would give out enough power to make steam in 2 boilers together

  • @cedarcam You cant. Live steam is DC. Also the steam isnt real: the steam oil generates that really it only makes very, very little steam

  • @cedarcam At times it can be tricky enough trying to run two ordinary ones together!

  • @Inkyminkyzizwoz Your right there Should see some of my out takes from my own layout Trying to film and run 2 trains

  • @tpvalley

You cant. only one model on the same circuit at once.

  • @75echo

I guess the voltage would have to be doubled for the same boiler energy.

  • haaaa she green nowww ...shes goin shes goin thumbs up if that voice got on your nerves lol

  • were did u test this train at because the models there looked awesome

  • It is a shop in a small town called Morley in Yorkshire

  • very quiet for steam

  • They are very quiet yes You get a lot more sound from a DCC Sound loco

  • do you know if live steam can run without special controls on standard track and without smoke oil cos i dont want one accidently only to find sumthing will go wrong with it cheers thanks!

  • Live steam runs on standard track but you do need the special controls to make it work. Not sure what you mean about the smoke oil but the 'Smoke' you see is actualy real steam after it has been used to drive the engine like the real thing it comes out of the chimney. You do need to use the special steam oil If you don't the parts in the engine will jam when it gets hot

  • @TheIntercityhst

smoke oil is for electric powered locos to make them look realistic, the live steam uses higher voltage to power an electric heater that produces steam in boiler.

  • what a nice and cool train man i wish i had one mam.

  • how long does it last between water fil ups

  • Depends on how many coaches you pull but I checked with the shop and they said they usualy get a 20 min run for each water fill with 3 coaches

  • zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

    it's a train track!!LOL

  • @jazzybazzy34 yes well done.

  • @jazzybazzy34 - it's a FRAKKIN' LIVE STEAM LOCO in OO scale, mate! That's no mean feat. Not our fault if you just don't get it.

  • what scale is it?

  • The scale is the standard British 00 4mm = 1 foot . 76 times smaller than the real thing so slightly larger than the HO 3.5mm =1foot . 87 times smaller you probably use although the track is the same so no real problem running one of these on an HO scale layout

  • nice train and nice layout how big is the layout n how much did the mallard cost

  • The layout is about 10 feet long (3 Mtr) and 6 feet wide (2 Mtr) I am not sure how much the Mallard costs but a set with track controler and loco is around £500

  • @cedarcam Little over six hundred dollars US. I should know I just bought the golden fleece.

  • @kabukikitsune Great I hope you are pleased with it. You need to practice driving a while to get used to the controls. The train will run better as it is run in and then you will find it much easier to drive well

  • @kabukikitsune Dont pay that much mate. Go checkout Ebay Uk.

and a online user who sells them very cheap. ive bought to geese at 300$ each Which INCLUDED Postage!!!

    2ktechnologies Ebau UK

  • @kabukikitsune Sorry and that WAS Australian Dollars!!!!! $300 with postage!

  • Hornby live steam isnt proper live steam like the garden railway ones and real trains. Its heated by electricity an dno steam come from the funnel from the train. Its a smoke genoratoer like you got on trains 20years ago and can add on now. Thats why you need to put in the oil.

  • The steam is made by an electric heater yes so unlike the real thing or the models with a fire to heat the water but the oil does not make the smoke It lubricates the piston It is far too thick to make smoke like in the old generators which used something more like baby oil There is a film on here showing one taken apart and all the components are shown Just I cannot find it now

  • @Djmfox - err, no, that IS real steam from the chimney - the oil is to lubricate the pistons in the cylinder, as you would need with any live steam loco.

  • fantastic!

  • Would you like to explain your comment? Hornby have nothing on the quality of bachmann locos

  • Morley Model Centre, 6 Cheapside by any chance? :-)

  • No that shop is a specialist in radio control and is just down the road from this one which is closer to the town center at 67 Queen Street

  • cute

  • hornby is so much better than bachman

  • @tomstheskateboarder If you say so, they are twice as expensive too.

  • @tomstheskateboarder Hornbys is a pile of shit. well over priced for cheep plastic. the steam is the best thing about them.

  • @sierraxr4icosie We all have are own opinions.

  • @tomstheskateboarder - Bachmann does not make live steam OO gauge models, and as for their electric-powered models, Hornby has only just caught up to Bachmann in my opinion.

  • @tomstheskateboarder , unless you have seen the current product range for this summer from Bachmann, in regards to their awesome buildings and loco's watch this space hornby.......

  • What an amazing little machine! Thanks for posting. :-)

  • Thank's for watching. For such a small size it is remarkable how well these run and how powerful they are

  • where was this video filmed

  • It was filmed in a model shop in a town called Morley near Leeds along with my other film Scotsman V Mallard

  • i love hearing the little steam engine.

    ph-ta ph-ta ph-ta

    tee hee ^~^;

  • Yea Just like the real thing in miniature :)

  • Great video. Thanks for sharing. The flying scotsman live steam model is on my wishlist for 2010. It's great to see real steam in 00 gauge. Well done again.

  • Thank you for your comment These models are very realistic in operation once you get used to them The smoke units fitted to some DC locos do not come near the sight and sound of these

  • That was great!

  • Looks nice but to complicated

    i prefer dc

  • Yes they are not something you can take from the box and have running well in moments like a DC one But with practice good results can be achieved I have mentioned before my own layout is not suitable for running these with it's long tunnel but I would like to have one some day

  • 3.16 I missed me train! :)

  • Ha ha Sure that train was supposed to stop Timetable says 3.16 to London

  • it really dont like the curves though

  • Very nice to see such a small-scale steamer. Thanks for sharing it!

  • aaah distiled water

  • Nice video man!

  • Thank's for the comment

  • Great work chaps, thoroughly enjoyed that.

  • Thanks for watching I am pleased you like it Check out the Scotsman V Mallard race as well That was fun to make

  • very nice indeed there she goes clagging away with her guts out well done mate

  • LOL Yea I was surprised how much steam there is from such a small boiler They have a nice exhaust sound too Thanks for the comment

  • ur welcome mate anytime

  • wht size is this layout, it looks AWESOME. i notice two layers, does the lower track go up to the higher one?

  • The layout is around 10 feet x 6 feet and has 2 DC tracks and a live steam track all round At the window side it goes to 4 tracks The upper level is 2 track DCC and is not connected to the lower one But it does also have a 12 foot x 3 foot board end on with a station and engine sheds For the race film the shop owner reconnected one of the DC tracks to another steam controller so he could drive both trains independantly

  • Live steam is amamazing. I think i will get one for christmas

  • They are very different to the usual electric steam trains Amazing as you say

  • how can you get one i think it takes alot of heart to make one you just can't get it you have to have the parts and matreals

  • These trains are supplied ready made in sets which contain the track power supply and special controller used to drive them After that you can buy extra locomotives to run You will need to check out a Hornby dealer to buy one

  • oh if i had the cash i would buy one that ould be a 4-4-0 or 4-6-6-4

  • On second thought I think I will get the mallard when I am fourteen or something And I am just ten...

  • That is a long time to wait I would be wanting one for Christmas as you first said

  • So dose this just simmulate steam, and run of the electricity from the rails, or is it actually steam powerd!

  • These are actually powerd by steam They use electricity from the rails to heat the water in a tiny boiler and when the steam pressure is up off they go Once they are running they will go for quite a distance even with the electricity turned off although that is not the way to operate them They also use the electricity to control the speed and direction

  • be nice if it had steam coming out the cylinder cocks when it starts off

  • Yes but in such a small scale that would be very hard to do

  • yeah i know that but anythings possible the sky aint the limit=P

  • Your right A few years ago who would of thought a real live steam model in that scale could be made commercially

  • I go to that model shop

  • I think you have found a very good shop there. They are always willing to help and order you any items not in stock

  • On Topic: Cool!

Off Topic: Holy! How many train packs and sets have you got? You really don't need 2 pendolinos. One is DCC Ready and one is DCC Fitted. Are you a member of staff of the Hornby Company?

  • LOL Lots of them But I made this film in a model shop I know where they have the layout on display and you can take along your own locos to run there. The live steam Mallard belongs to the shop owners and they steamed it for me to film

  • wow wat a great video its awesome!!

  • Thank you for the comment I am pleased you enjoyed watching

  • Finally a decent video of Live Steam. Thanks very much!

  • Thank you for watching I am pleased you enjoyed it Soon I am going to add another film made in the same shop.I know I said that before but I have just not been able to get the beginning of the film how I wanted it with my limited editing equipment

  • Why do some people call there trains a she? They say " there she goes". Its an it. Its a material thing.

  • Locomotives are always referred to as she. The same with Ocean Liners and ships. Always referred to as she. Its just the way it is!

  • As Hilux5972 says railway locomotives, usually steam, like ships are often referred to as 'she' I do not know when it began though. Many people regard them as being the nearest man made object to a living thing. They may steam well one day and badly the next . Even the models did not behave well in a new film I have been editing for no apparent reason. The engine men would often show them affection when they worked well

  • As far as I'm aware, vehicles were referred to as 'she' by sailors on long journeys where they wouldn't see their wifes for months at a time. So in essence, they were replacing their wife with a vehicle.

  • I think that could be where the reference started. Ships have been about much longer than trains and often carried figure heads in the form of women I seem to remember that was something to do with calming the seas and bringing the sailors luck on a long voyage. As many railway companies built their lines to carry goods from the docks the railway engine men probably took the term from there and it has carried on to this day

  • Interesting, thank you for that.

  • I always wondered how the whistle worked on those. on the controller there isn't any button, right? so how do you use it?

  • The locomotives run forward or reverse Inside there is a motor which changes the valve settings controlled by pulses sent out from the controller. In the mid gear position (neutral) the valve position lets steam into the whistle. So it normally only sounds when you change direction of the locomotive from forward to reverse or reverse to forward.

  • Nice video. It gives a good impression of live steam. You don't see live steam here in any shop in the Netherlands but I am wondering if it is still populair in the UK. Maybe I will buy a set in the future. Regards, Arthur

  • I am not sure how well they sell here but Hornby are planning to introduce a Duchess and there are quite a few shops who stock the sets Maybe you could buy one on line from one of our dealers in the future

  • How does a Duchess look like? Honestly I like the Mallard very much.

  • There are a few clips of the new Hornby Duchess with sound here The live steam version was due out later this year as far as I know But I have not heard any news recently

  • There are no plans to release a Live Steam Duchess. Where did you hear that? Wikipedia?

  • I read about it in a magazine some time ago If I can find it I will let you know It was probably one called Railway Modeller we have here Also the man in the model shop mentioned it I will ask next time I am out that way and see if he has any more info

  • the first 1min 26 secs of this are a waste of time

  • This is my introduction Some people may like to see how Mallard is fed and watered Thanks for watching

  • i take your point totally to get steam up seems like really hard work, perhaps if they could encorporate sound into the models that maybe the answer... i respect all the graft you are putting in to get them trains running ,, cheers

  • reckon a model with sound would be much better than steam... ??

  • Interesting question. I think it depends on what you want from a model train. It was fun making the film with the live steam. It is very different operating one of these and is not easy to operate in a realistic way The train is best as seen running, continuously with an express train. Once the speed is set it will run for around 15 mins. All you need to do is make samll adjustments. For me I would go for the with sound option and a more scale operation. The new Hornby Duchess with sound is good

  • oh ok that answers my question! lol

  • Ah but wait a moment This layout is in a model shop I visited and the loco belongs to them. I would like to have one of these one day but my layout is not suitable. If it derailed in the tunnel I would have big problems. The car train decided to do that the day I bought it and it was a job to recover it because the common bogies are not attatched. Some were left behind when I dragged it out so a little more access is needed for the next time it happens

  • nice vid 5* i've got hornby live steam dwight d eisenhower, i've uploaded videos.

  • I took a look at your vids LOL Looks more like Mallard with the speed it's going I wish I had one myself but my layout is not suitable for one with the long tunnels at the end it would be sure to derail in there

  • Lol! The sounds from the cars outside sync up almost perfectly with whats going on! Gorgeous model though too ;)

  • LOL Yea it was not intentional but when I played the film back I noticed the sound of a car engine starting just as Mallard was ready to move I commented on it myself when I took a copy to the shop where I made the film

  • are the hornby train set from argos any good?

    been thinking of getting one

  • fantastico hornby's

  • which hornby set?

  • argos don't have many trains. Try your nearest model shop.

  • your not very good at filling it up are you?
