Bravo!!! it takes a lot of gut to play Mahler 7's last movements... solos, hard drumming and pedaling. I'm not a timpanist myself, but I know timpanists dread and love this piece, and you executed the starting solo perfectly! Bravo again!
I wish more youth orchestras sounded like this over here in the U.S.! I know too many "professional"" orchestras over here that don't play at this level...
The horns are after the beat quite a bit on several places in this short recording. Hopefully it's just an... acoustical phenomenon only audible in this clip. ;)
haha, wow dansemacabre67. for real. if you want perfectly steady tempos go play in a marching band. and as a trumpet player myself and the positioning of the camera mike i'd have to say that the priciple trumpet was playing pretty well. that's a pretty hard part to play. and I'm sure the sound carried pretty well out in front of the concert hall.

why students shouldn't play mahler's 7th: shitty horn tone horns rushing horns dragging conductor unskillfully taking the tempo way too fast principal trumpet not being heard strings out of tune horns out of tune all i can hear are horns listen to the tempo of the timpani then fast forward to the end the tempos are different YEAH thats not written in my score..
maybe you can only hear horns because if the camera is closer to the horns then the horns are louder then everything else! GASP! and with the camera being in the back the principal trumpet would be farther away! double gasp! and i assume it was pretty in tune this being the EUYO prehaps the low quality of the camera (no offence) distorted the sound of it. i dont remember this particular movement very well.
and if you knew what you were talking about you'd know that music is up to the interpretation of the player(s). its what give music emotion and passion.
You are an idiot. Its a rehearsal, its a youth orchestra, and the only reason "all you hear is horns" is because their bells are pointing right at the camera. Have common sense, and learn properties of sound, please. The tempo is subject to change, depending on the conductor, and its rightfully his job. Mahler wrote, intelligently, a symphony of this magnitude for different tempos. Any adequate musician would not question this.
Good job on the timpani. I would have used other mallets though.
SAMUUULLLIIIII!!! Oh memories... Summer Tour 05 was just the best!! My head is even in the video woohoo.. you should def. upload some more!! High Five!!
