  • Nice Work.

I notice a typical PC switching power supply has a PF > 0.7.

Has anyone looked at the reactive power of a laser printer while in idle?

I know a laser printer requires a lot of power to print, and while printing jobs or working the PF is not alarming, but the Idle PF while NOT printing is horrible

    Printer Phantom Load:

    Watts 5W

    PF about 0.2

    VA about 50

I need to look into the printers more, and it could be our next lab. We just posted work with CFLs and PF correction

  • I am going by memory, but the PF was lesss than 0.2 (PF was really closer to 0.1 or 5W for 50VA). I have not done the experiment as a formal lab bit I noticed this while preparing a CFL lab.

I recall the VA was about 50

I think it will be an interesting lab. Have you all experimented with many consumer loads and Power Factor.

PF is something typically considered on the grid or in industrial high power applications, with big industrial motors (inductive loads).

    Keep up the work!
