Mick is much more classically trained than James and I think that has to due with why people like him more than Mick. Most of the Slipknot fans I've encountered with enough knowledge of guitar to hold respect for these two seem to favor James because of his unorthodox/unique sound/approach to a lot of his work.

I have to say I favor James more as well but Mick is certainly nothing short of great at what he does.
