I've been told you can match your e string to the dial tone of a telephone. First fret, E string is the F note and so is the dial tone. Theres your reference point so you can utilized the 5-5-4-5 tuning method.

aaaah thankyou :D you're the only person who's taught me how to tune a guitar on youtube - everyone else says you need a reference point i.e using the E string, but if i'm beginner how am i supposed to know what that sounds like!? ANYWAY, thankyou :D

maybe it's me, or maybe it's my guitar i'm not sure but i followed everything he said to the letter and my guitar is still not tuned properly . what happened? am i THAT dumb?? maybe. argh well back to practicing.

I find it REALLY easy to tune my guitars with the pitchpipe. And sometimes, when im lazy and dont want to take out the pitchpipe y just hum an A with my voice (i dont know why, but that note just comes out naturally and correct) and tune it to that using the 5th fret method.

Ha ha ha....you have a good sense of humor. Tuning with a pitch pipe is very difficult. I just put the video up to show people what it is like to do. It's better to tune with a digital guitar tuner.
