I have a mid 80's Sony Betamax machine that still works great. It's similar to yours, but I think it's a step above. Still plays, rewinds, fast forwards, and records perfectly. A good format for sure.

The Betamax was a sweet machine. My mom's friend's dad had the Betamax VCR in his old Chevy, and the tapes were like 10 pounds. I found 200 audio casette tapes in my basement, and my car has a CD player and tape casette player + AM/FM radio. Sweet VCR. I bought a Sanyo VWM-710 VCR at a Thrift Store and it was $7.50 + the coaxial cable, which was $0.99
That's a beautiful example of an HF300 you've found there! Even having the flip-door over the clock/timer controls, which is usually broken or missing. Also, w/ that machine, it can turn on just by inserting a cassette.
That sounds more like mold (that's bad). If the affected cassettes contain any important recordings and if they can still be played, I would take measures to transfer the recordings ASAP. Mold deterioration will only get worse.
The magnetic binder does not oxidize, especially since the magnetic medium is an oxide itself, such as iron oxide or chromium oxide.
After playing a mold-ridden cassette, I would thoroughly clean the tape path of the VCR before ever playing another cassette, especially a cassette that is free from infestation.
You should switch the test tape in your car with the Women on Women tape. Nice score! I've been looking at thrift shops too cause Mr. Betamax and Ebay are too expensive. No luck so far...
If you press record on a cassette that has the tab broken off, so you can't record over your great program, it will eject tape.. I found one a few models up from that one at a flea market for $10, the SLHF-600 super beta Hifi, same built machine as that one basically, and worked perfect when i go it home.. I also have an SL-HF600 that someone gave to me a few years back, along with a tubful of 100+ beta tapes! It didn't work when I got it, but replacing the voltage regulator IC in the power supply fixed it! (along with a busted gear in the FL cassette loading mechanism that I broke).
For being a 25-year-old VCR, it still records and plays tapes great!

The SL-HF300 wasn't a high end machine, but it had good performance. Nevertheless, for $6, that is an incredible bargain.
BTW, the replacement remote for the SL-HF300 is the RMT-124. Obviously, the black/dark grey remote would be the one to get for your machine as the silver remote would match the silver SL-HF300.

Replacement remotes for this model are relatively easy to find.
The remote for this is the commonly used RMT-124, which was used with a few other Sony models, such as the SL-HF400.
It's also available in two different colors: dark grey and silver.

My dad still has a SL-20 model he bought back in 1985, it still works great!
I've found that some of the tapes have started to gather white gunk on the film, oxidation I guess.
He's got about 100 tapes that work great though. :P
