3:38 he should have said, "but when you're doing the jiggy with a hot pretty young thing at my age every man who looks at you is doing so with his dick." Would have been classic Hitchcock.
I like how Ingrid went from totally rough and self pitying to utterly enjoying herself by the time of the ball. She was brilliant at realistic round character portrayal.
3:35 - the famous ramp "Bergman was taller than Rains - 5' 9" or 10" vs. 5' 6.5". Hitchcock had a ramp built for one scene so that Rains would appear taller than his co-star when he walked up to her." i love this movie :)
From 4:00 until 4:36, one of the most important and influential shots in the history of cinema... and, boy, am I embarassed not to know until tonight that Hitch, himself, is in the scene as well!

Am I the only one who thinks about twenty minutes ago this film degenerated into a petty adolescent hormonal squabble? The breathtaking and talented Ms. Bergman aside, I'll take any of Hitchcock's 30''s work, "Vertigo," "Psycho," or "Family Plot," over this crap any day.
No one says it, as it may be too impolite, but the fact is that even by the time of this film, Hitchcock had already learned to so subtly cultivate the tension along a story line that it approached cinematic sadism. He was a cruel man, indeed.
What's more, it seems he enjoyed himself in the process.
Hitchcock's "cameo" is for once not only amusing, but also, as a friend once pointed-out to me, functional. By drinking the wine, he is helping deplete the on-hand supply, thus propelling the plot of Raines' being forced to go downstairs to the cellar and finding -- oh, I shouldn't give it away!
@bchfront Amusing? What’s amusing about a man putting a glass on a table? And functional? Of course he has to have a vague ‘function’, what’s he going to do, walk in front of the camera & wave? Hundreds of guests are drinking wine; Hitchcock’s glass is amongst dozens and dozens, 'helping depletion' none whatsoever. And what about in Strangers on a Train? I suppose a randomer carrying a cello onto a train is also rather amusing, and extremely functional. Not. OH STOP TALKING SHITE, YOU COCK END.

Beautifully, intelligently phrased retort. Untoppable. If you'll pardon me I'll help myself to a glass of champagne, before it runs out.

Thank you for pointing out Hitchcock. He was actually relatively slim in that short shot.
He was a frustrated actor, bless his heart.
