Aquarist noobs like you don't understand that aerobacteria, the bacteria you're trying to grow, require air to stay alive. Your set up does not properly facilitate the cultivation of bacteria. Try connecting some air pumps up to the bottom of that thing, and you'll do much better.

This is a great idea, I have two little power head I'm going to use for something like this on my 5g.

The one problem I see is, you completely removed all your old filter material. Did you have another filter running on that tank? You need to keep that bacteria going, if you just get rid of it all like that you have to completely re-cycle your tank. I would keep at least 50% of the old media and wait a month before the new media was properly cultured before switching the rest to the new stuff.

good design , but personally i wouldnt make or buy a cheap filter ..if the filter would start to leak then you get water everywere and an empty tank ...i would make a diy internal filters tho because there isnt as much risk involved...

i wouldnt trust anything but fluval and eheim for external filters

Yep. it did work lol. kept my 20 galllon sparkling clean for a month while i was out of the country. I know i could have just bought a filter but i simply wanted to try a DIY idea. i thought of something else since my last comment. got to the hardware store, get a 5 gallon bucket with a lid. tons of space for biological filtration.

This sounds like a good idea, and it would work with bulkheads. And it would give lors of exra space. But int would need a bigger pump, which would take up more room in the container or in the tank. Check out my other video in this series about "answers" it adresses this. Those containers are also known to leak so be careful. If you have to seal it, it will be impossible to seal.  Good luck! you should try this. I'm interested in how it would turn out. :)

you should go to a hardware store and get some bulkheads. it will let you disconnect your hoses. and, with bulkheads you filter cant leak.
