Wow, the keyboard totally opened up Jade's ability to communicate. I've watched a few of your other earlier videos of Jade's progress and was starting to worry for her future a bit -- as in, would she be eternally frustrated with not being able to interact in a way that worked for both her and everyone else -- but with a computer, she has a tool to overcome any difficulties she might've had trying to conquer some of those challenges. And is she ever a smarty! And cute, too! You're blessed.
Is it considered "lining things up" when she doesn't put spaces between words?
Apart from simply strong preferences such as having her blocks with her for building before she will sing, and not liking traditional spacing between words when she writes, it doesn't seem like autism to me, but only that she could use a speech therapist - or just wait until she gets older to speak, like Thomas Edison who was six years old before he spoke much. Only issue is she's not speaking in full sentences?
@LosetheStone16 I never considered that she was lining words up. She didn't know how to use the spacebar yet. She is six now, and knows how to use a spacebar. The blocks were not par of the music routine, more that the music was part of the block routine. The concentration Jade showed at such a young age was only one of the symptoms of autism Jade has displayed.
I am relieved when my daughter is diagnosed as normal by strangers on youtube.
@LosetheStone16 Jade's speech is 90% echolalic. She can speak in full sentences, paragraphs and chapters, but she cannot answer many simple questions, such as her grade, age, brother's name, cannot tell us how her day was, etc. This last month, she has mastered answering "what is your name".
Autism is much more than just not speaking. Thomas Edison was himself very much on the autistic spectrum, just like Tesla, Einstein, etc, etc. Autism isn't always such a bad thing...
@LosetheStone16 btw, what part of she is only three, and is spelling and typing words do you not understand? I know I'm her mom, but I can't be the only person to find her amazing.
Does she have hyperlexia? This is a diagnosis for kids displaying autistic characteristics who also learn to read very early (usually with understanding of what they read - as opposed to kids with classic autism who might decode but not understand what they read). She is a precious little girl and you have done a wonderful job helping her to learn.
Check out the other video of Jade at 20 months where she is building blocks and not paying any attention to the presence of her mother. From what I have read from Simon Baron-Cohen she clearly shows early signs of autism.
she is now 4, and can read ANY word you spell out for her. Once we learned she was sight reading, we surrounded her with phonics. She LOVES letters/ words, and reading. How old is your brother?
LoL, I know. Last week, Jade dropped something, and said "what the hell?!" I didn't know whether to be angry that she swore, or happy that she used the phrase appropriately! Of course, we all got a good laugh...
I just left my laptop down at her level, and open. Prior to this, we knew she could read, but well, this, just totally blew me away! When she types "LoveIyou", that was the very first time she said it first. It still makes my heart melt. :)
wow, she is smart, I am postive that alot of kids that are in Kindegarden can't even spell as good as her. My daugher just turned 2 yrs old and can only say about 9 words and she doesn't even say those words often, the doctors are thinking she is autistic now. I have been very upset and staying up for hours doing research on it,I have her scheduled to get her hearing tested and a referrel to speech therapy. Don't Austic kids stack thing repeatly? line up toys? She does, but not repeatly!
not all autistic kids are the same! some have some signs, while other have a completely different set of signs. Jade never lined things up, but she did like to stack things!
It would be nice if more people could see videos like this rather than the usual crying and screaming kids presented by groups like autism speaks. As an autistic I am glad you posted this video. Many of us are highly intelligent. And this video shows it quite well. Keep up the good work and Jade will do great things in the world.
btw, Thank you. I agree that there needs to be more postive videos about the autistic. That is why I posted these. Jade promotes her own brand of "autism awareness" whenever we go out, and people see her happy, incredibly well behaved, and reading!
And I never once have felt the need to tell people my life is so bad I need to drive off a bridge. ;)
Amazingly enough, most families are NOT like autism speaks, there are many positive families here on youtube.
Well, it could be considered a "ritualistic behavior" which is common among the autistic. Jade used to have many "rituals". When building block towers, she always had to play a certain song on a toy when she was done building. Nowadays, she doesn't have too many rituals, and is pretty easy going.
When I would accomplish something, I would run around. Lots of kids run around when excited, but autistic kids are probably more likely to introduce order to it by going to the same place rather than running to random places.
This is amazing there are just no words for how amazing. My brother has down syndrome and does not really have the vocabulary he should have although he is 7. But he is very smart and even though it takes us a minute are two sometimes to understand what he is trying to say. He can defenitely get what he wants across.
Thank you! Jade was 39 mos, or 3 yrs and 3 mos in this video. She can now type over 300 words accurately! Last month, (Jade was 3 yrs 7mos) she showed us that she can also write! She has mastered such words as octopus and elephant!
Jade now knows how to search youtube for movies of her favorite things, like elmo, babies, or kitties. Jade is pretty mind blowing, especially when trying to keep her challenged! She keeps me on my toes!
That's My Niece!!! I think she can already spell better then I do. Monica, I can't beging to tell you how proud I am of you to handle one of life's true challenges. Your fortitude to make autism awareness better is a blessing for the rest of us. And don't worry uncle Pat's saving for Jade's college too.
OOOhhh good job Jade! Wow, she is amazing! I am sitting here with both boys and my husband and we are cheering her on!!! Clapping and yelling!! I also love her new hair cut too. :o)
Wow, amazing! Jade is doing so well and she's so smart. Ruby watched this video too and clapped after she typed each word. Yay Jade! (Her haircut is so cute!)
Janice, thank you for giving me all the info way back in the beginning (and putting up with my many tearful phone calls). Especially the info about Dr Berger. I owe so much of Jade's progress to this!
Monica, Jade is doing so well! The typing skills and verbal gains are remarkable. It looks like all of your personal time with her and your biomedical interventions are paying off. I will try to write a letter to my congreswoman soon about the value of Low Dose Naltrexone as it relates to the compounding bill.Keep up the good work!! She looks terrific.
Wow, that IS amazing. She seems to really like that as well. I think she might be hyperlexic like junior. I don't think nuerotypical kids can do that. What is interesting is that she is not being prompted by anyone to spell. Great connection mom. Junior doesn't like to type, he has to learn to be patient with finding letters on the keyboard.

instead of "normal" I prefer "neurotypical" which to us, usually equates to boring and confusing...

thanx for real that sounds more politically correct!!!!!!

In this video she seems more like a really smart kid with a slight speech impediment than a person with autism.
