In fairness to Cosell, he was unique, naturally cocky, arrogant, and know it all loudmouth. These announcers today are TRYING to be unique... there's a difference. They are not naturally gifted at making the kinds of comments that Howard would convey. The closest in the last 30 years has been Brent Musberger... he's another hype master. Other than that, these guys are garbage and pretenders to throe.
The ONLY regular season games I've ever seen in this game's league in terms of sheer excitement were the MNF game between the Dolphins and the Bears (1985,) and the Sunday night game in 2007 when the Pats played the Giants for 16-0.
It's a different time now. The excitement is gone, announcers aren't as good, crowds aren't as jubilant. The 70's and early 80's were a great time for football, and sports in general. Cosell brought his unique ability to hype events with articulation and enough condescension to ignite the critics but keep people interested.
@eugenemcgirt I wouldn't say the announcers aren't as good. The difference is the self-important blowhards like Cosell have their own shows like Jim Rome.
The run by Campbell on the sideline was a TD, and you heard why MNF was such an event during those times... Gifford and Cosell helped make MNF an event... Don Meredith as well.
@eugenemcgirt, I was just watching this thinking to myself, why isn't football this exciting anymore? What happened? Even the Super Bowl isn't this exciting.

The 1985 Miami/Chicago game was outstanding for excitement as well... a good comparison. A raucus crowd and BIG matchup.
