next year marks 100 years since the formation of the ULSTER VOLUNTEER FORCE . An army of volunteers formed to fight against England and HOME RULE. These brave young men were sent to into battle on the 1st day of July 1916 from which most of them never made returned.... FOR THEY SHALL NOT GROW OLD AS THOSE WHO ARE LEFT GROW OLD, AGE WILL NOT WORRY THEM NOR THE YEARS CONDEMN.. AT THE GOING DOWN OF THE SUN.. AND IN MORNING WE WILL REMEMBER THEM....... FOR GOD AND ULSTER..........
good video, but the "medals" shown at 2.02 with the title"Two medals won by a young man from the 14th Battalion" are not WW1 era medals. infact it is the obverse and reverse of the same medal dating from the South African wars of 1879. It is not impossible for a soldier in WW1 to have this medal but highly unlikely as he would be at the youngest in his early 50's. The 14th (YCV's) members were aged 18 to 35...
So glad I served! Those who came before me made me proud! Former Royal Marine of Ulster and Jamaican decent! Love both of my heritages equally! The Gerry's ran from the Ulsterman! Toughest blokes in Britain and I'm a Mancunian! Lest we forget
@MrJimbolean No, it's not a big deal as my point remains the same. And it's not really paranoia when Republicans still moan about stuff that happened almost 100 years ago, that IS perpetual being offended. But hey, carry on, I already made my point (people from all over Ireland fought in the war) and if you don't get it that's not my problem. What I do know is that Republicans see Irishmen who fought with the Allies as traitors.
@MrJimboleonard Erm, seriously: Learn to fucking read. I never denied that people from both parts (So I got the year wrong, big deal, there was already a great anti-British feeling in Ireland). No idea why you're moaning so hard about this, must be something to do with being perpetual offended, like most republicans.
@Jelle1880 OH! here we go paranoia setting in about republicans. I'm the proud keeper of two WW1 medals won by my relatives. Getting dates wrong, IS A BIG DEAL, just proves you know shit., you are an embarassment. There are idiots out there who shout about WW1 and try to connect it to something in the present day and claim it as there own, now that annoys me and other right thinking people. I've a suspicion you might be one of those knuckle draggers.
its a shame tht scum would leave such comments about war heroes my great great grandfather was in the scots greys cavalry unit and was killed by shrapnel
When it comes to doin' Huns, real lowlife Nazi-Huns, you'll never see a tricolour flying. No, just the red white and blue of glorious Great Britian & Northern Ireland!
@MrJimboleonard The only idiotic statement is your's as the southern irish tricolour never flew during WWII when Nazis were getting it, only the red white and blue of Great Britian & Northern Ireland - fact.
All southern irish volunteers joined the British Army, as Eire was hand-in-glove with Adolf, and fought under the British flag.
When it comes to doin' Huns, real lowlife Nazi-Huns, you'll never see a tricolour flying. No, just the red white and blue of glorious Great Britian & Northern Ireland!
My statement clearly relates to the Nazi era, so is bound to relate also to the Second World War - and while I have your attention can you name me a European City other than Dublin, that honours Nazis with statues and memorials?
Great video, my great grandfather was killed on the 1st july 1916, he was Srg Henry Foster age 40, he was in the Irish Rifles from the Shankill road. Pitty there are some sad gits leaving sectarian post on this, small minded idiots, the most likely had family fighting that day.
@Jelle1880 There was no republic during that period of history, Ireland was one country under British rule. 200000 Men from the four provinces of Ireland fought for democracy. It is unfortunate that some idiots today will seek to hijack history, to fight again the old battles, to re-establish hostilities and to perpetuate division. Some will look to use the memory of the dead to bring suffering to the living.
@Jelle1880 My God, the ignorance of some people is truly amazing. I'm afraid that it is idiots like you give unionism a bad name. Ireland got it's Independence in 1921. The fact is that over 200000 Irishmen from every county in Ireland served during the Great War with over 35000 deaths. Catholics, Protestants, and men of no religion stood side by side to face the enemy. Go and read some history .

Offended from the day they’re born
From late at night till early morn
Offended when they go to Schools
It’s not our fault they look like fools
Offended when they’re in their teens
In Celtic tops and dirty jeans
Offended by Lord Carson and Craig
Get used to it you stupid Taig

Offended by the chance of a job
Their petrol bombs they’d rather lob
Offended by the rate of pay
Upon the dole they’d rather stay
Offended on the day they wed
Thirteen kids to get out of bed
Offended till the day they die
Cause the Union Flag will always fly

@MrJimboleonard Well, Ireland got it's independence in 1916, and even after that Irish citizens still fought in Europe against the Central Powers.
