I like how this has a bit of In Repair in it, which was recorded with an 8-string guitar as well (not JM playing the 8-string at the time, he was too busy soloing :P ). That song never gets enough recognition, especially considering the fact that it was started and finished in one day.

To those who it may concern, a lot of you, John is playing both the bass line and the guitar chords. If you notice the headstock of the hybrid instrument, there are three bass tuners and 5 or 6 guitar tuners on the underside. He is playing the bass note with his thumb, much like Hendrix did, and using his right index, middle, and ring fingers to pluck the guitar chords and solo over. Very cool! That instrument sure does look fun to play, and a pretty nice little jazzy groove.

@musymusic: that would be find except the phrasing starting at 0:40 requires more than just a thumb. haha. listen to it, listen to it with headphones and any bass player will tell you that the comping is being done by something else. he is playing a novax/traugott style guitar here like charlie hunters which has 2 bass strings on it but there is a bass player off-camera for sure. the bass drops out later on 2:19 and he plays bass on the guitar.

@sehnsucht77 there is no bass player. You're right, he's playing on a Novax 8 string guitar, 4 bass strings, 4 treble. On the parts where you think there is a bass player, he's playing the bass strings with his fingers as well as his thumb. Listen to Charlie Hunter, if what he can play is possible, then John playing this without a bass player is not that far fetched.

There is no bass guitarist playing along. The only bass is this video is what John is playing on the top 2 strings.

Also, if you notice that the bass sounds really treble-ey, and thats because its being played through a guitar amp.
