This had to be in early 1980, as Jean Stapleton was still listed as part of the cast in ABP's 1st season (79-80), though she was only in a handful of episodes.
For Season 2 (80-81), Edith (who Stapleton said she was tired of playing and wanted to move on), was killed off in the 1st episode, which has the famous scene of Archie sitting on the bed crying while holding her slipper.

@storrs19 The Sunday night lineup was first set in the 1979-80 season. All of the shows finished in the top 20 in the ratings.
