I think it didn't do well because it was released at the wrong time. For instance, I think if it was released now, it might have done really well. I just don't think movie audiences of the 90s were ready for an awesome pirate film. I loved it when I was a little girl because I also knew of Errol Flynn pirate films...and I STILL love this flim! Anyway, I think Cutthroat Island has earned the status of cultclassic. So many films make it big after their fallen debut.
@MononokeLynn True, I loved this film from the beginning to end. I brought it on VHS my relatives watched it with me and my aunt who take notes of every little detail noted that M. Adams after the disaster of the town where she brought Shaw she noticed that her fingernails were still dirty. - . - I was moving at the time and when I went back to get it after moving I found all my tapes where I left them but 2.
