With the modern equipment (primarily the ball itself!) his "easy" pokes would be 300 yards. If he really let one go, he'd make JB Holmes faint. I can't even fathom how long he would be able to hit it.
Best thing about Jack was that he could still find the fairway, even when going after it 110%.
But if we're talking about long with old equipment...remember Tom Weiskopf? In Golf My Way, Jack said Tom was constantly knocking it 20 yards by him. 20 yards past Jack freakin' Nicklaus. Unreal.
Hey MFBueno: Nicklaus' AVERAGE drive was 275 with the old ball and a stell persimmon. He could easily hit it over 300 yards. Please read his 1973 book, Golf My Way, where he described flying the ball over 300 yards when conditions are good. A little roll and you would have 350+ so yes, you should believe it. Jack said it himself.
@howardroark182 ... and also, he acheived that distance with a 42.75 inch driver. yes, it's a fact! a modern player's 3 wood is longer than the driver he used to win 18 majors.
You guys know about the MacGregor experiment out on tour a few years ago, right? It was less than 10 years ago, and I'm thinking ~five. Anyhow, they brought a Nicklaus-era persimmon driver out (an Armour, I think) and some balata balls, and almost none of the tour players could muscle it out there even 260. The idea of what a Nicklaus or Snead would do with modern balls and equipment...absolutely terrifying. I just love hearing the star-struck adolescents blather on now.
During the 1963 PGA, Nicklaus won the long drive contest with a belt of over 341 yards. The first hole of the final round of the same tournament, he also hit his tee shot approximately 350 yards going on to eagle the par five hole. Yes, it was hot, but that's still pretty da*n long for 1963 He could hit it over 300 yards off the tee when necessary.
Look, I don't even know why I even bother with twits like you. Just go and do some research. Many accounts out like the Floyd one to back it up, who BTW said that he and Jack were knocking out there about 280 before JN decided to pound out a long one. Speaking of bullshit, where did you get the 120 mph figure? Didn't know they Launch monitors in 1965. And who says he couldn't crank 130 when he wanted to? Oh BTW, tell me something about physics I don't already know. Squid.
Just a huge smash on the ball. The guy could hit a 43 inch steel shafted persimmon driver with a wound balata 350. Anyone old enough to have played with that equipment, knows just how sick long that is. In the old days, 250 plus was a good poke.
yes Nickluas was very long, the longest of his era when he came on tour....but dont post this bullshit about him hitting it 350.....its just stupid and honestly not physically possible given the equipment back then....Jack flew the ball about 275 back then, which was VERY long for the equipment.
I don't give a rats ass whether you believe or not. There are many reliable accounts of Jack knocking it out there well into the 300s. Ray Floyd tells how thought Jack wasn't that long when he first played with him, until they came to a par 5 and he knocked it 50 yards by him. I heard a first hand account of him hitting it 348 at a long drive exhibition at the Master back in the 60's. Or how about him reaching a 630 yard Par 5 at Firestone with two 3 woods. Wanker!
Mr. Lugi....Nicklaus's clubhead speed was 120 back when he came on tour.....it has nohing to do w/ believing....it has to do w/ physics....w/ today's equipment a clubhead speed of 120 equated to about 300 yards in the air when hit flush....Nicklaus may have reached firestone #16 w/ 2 3 woods on a hot summer day, w/ a huge tailwind and rock hard fairways....look, i know how long he was for his era, he was the longest(just as when Tiger came on tour)....but u are still just posting bullshit
POOH!!!
