I looked this up on Wikipedia, because I was curious. My daughters are Irish dancers. My elder daughter just made her school's dance company & we were both curious about the basic differences between Irish & Scottish reels & jigs. BTW baby12345, u r a beautiful dancer:
As far as competitions were concerned, until 1986 there were only four standard dances - The Sword Dance, The Sean Triubhas, The Reel of Tulloch and The Highland Fling. Since then, various other (pre-existing) dances have been added to the competition repertoire. For example, there are two "character dances", "The Sailor's Hornpipe" and "The Irish Jig". The Sailor's Hornpipe was adapted from an English dance, which is now performed more frequently in Scotland, while...
...the Irish Jig is a caricature of Irish dancing (the dancer, in a red and green costume, is an interpretation of an Irish washerwoman scolding her wayward husband, gesturing angrily and frowning). If the Irish Jig is danced by a lady, it is about either the distressed wife scolding her husband or a washerwoman chasing taunting boys (or children in general) away who have dirtied her washing - the showing of the woman's fist symbolizes her wanting to beat up the children or the...
husband. If it is danced by a man, it is the story of Paddy's Leather Breeches, in which a careless washerwoman has shrunk Paddy's fine leather breeches and he is waving his shillelaghat her in anger and showing his fist, intending to hit her. The Hornpipe mimics a sailor in her majesty's navy doing work aboard ship: hauling rope, sliding on the rollicking deck, and getting his paycheck, and has quite a lot of detail involved that portrays the character...
Also I'd like to add, that the scottish version o the jig is a parody of an angry Irish wife who's said to be either angry at her bairn fer gettin the washin all mauchit or her husband who's still doon the pub.
Kay?
So as they'd ave said 200 + years ago in the north east,
kroneage, seriously mate, don't sproot crap. Au the dances come fae different time periods, fir instance, the Seann Triubhas comes fae the rebellion o 1745 when kilts were banned. The dance represents the shedding o the tartan trews the scots were forced to wear, hence the name seann triubhas which literally means auld trousers.
Im a highland dancer an find yer ignorance pretty annoying. The dance yer describing is the Highland fling, and only the highland fling.
Prounounced 'shawn trews' in Gaelic, in English it transslates to 'old trousers.' Origins are obscure: it definitely depicts a person in the act of shedding his trousers. It's said by some the dance came about in 1783 when the British Disarming Act of 1747 was finally repealed and Scots were allowed to wear their tartans and kilts once again.
The trews in the dance are NOT tartan trews, they are English plain trousers.
why do you find their ignorance annoying? Because they were trying to verify something they thought they knew? I'm a highland dancer too, and find your rudeness disgraces us.
What's the difference between Highland Scottish Jig and Irish Jig? I thought all these solo dances can be traced back to 1100AD Scotland and how the Scottish King would choose his Royal Guards by how well they danced!
So when King James had Scots moved and settled in Northern Ireland, he was trying settle the Irish down. Hence Scots-Irish!
These particular dances were supposedly then brought by Scots-Irish Immigrants fleeing religious prosecution to the Americas. Right?
They look silly but it looks like they're having a fine bit of craic. Go Scotland!

Its no pronounced "Shawn", for starters.
Its pronounced like the name "Shane".
Gaelic, Scottish Gaelic....Look it up.
And it DOES refer to the TARTAN TREWS that the scots were FORCED TO WEAR after the english banned kilts.
The dance represents the shedding OF THE TARTAN TREWS an the return o the KILTS.
Why would it be aboot english trews, the scots werney forced to wear them.
Oh an 1 more thing. Lift your reply straight fae a website...soonds like it
