As impressive as this whole part of the movie is, I have to say that the decision to charge the line of oliphants directly, is a major disservice to cavalry. No one of any true field experience would have done that. They would have parted, and swept 'round the sides of that massive line, and then taken it from behind.

Of course, that's not as macho, but a LOT more of the Rohirrim would've survived to raise a toast to the 'Glorious Dead'

@TheWhicker If they went around, the Oliphaunts would counter, they are just as fast and deadly as Rohirrim. Theoden (In the book) thought the oliphaunts could trip on the horse and soldier innards, and if they charged directly the horsemen could go behind the oliphaunts and fire at the Haradrim and Oliphaunts, for they are not protected on the back. (Besides the Haradrim on top.)

@XdjdaleyX Edoras is one city in Rohan, riders were sent out to gather other riders from the other towns-hence the scene when they gather at Dunharrow. Although why didn't they gather them for Helms deep?

There is one thing i don't understand. how come theoden said make safe the city when there were still over 100,000 orcs left and theoden and the riders of rohan just pushed a small flank toward the river. even without the mumakil the orcs would have done just fine on their own.

Even though the Rohirim were vastly outnumbered, the impact of their charge had caused a chain route among the orcs (though some might have had the idea to flee just as far as to where their allies, the haradrim, were). If you do not understand this then go get a Total War game and you will learn pretty fast.

@catapillar1234 Yes i have. all i was saying is that the riders of rohan had a much smaller army than the mordor orcs. but still they slammed into the orcs and caused them to flee toward the river and some went toward the mumakil. I just don't understand why the orcs with their enormous army, plus they also had trolls, easterlings, and wargs with them. could have been driven away so quickly.

@2010marioluigi i think its more towards the fact that the orcs had the realization that they had the momentum to continue that charge because they failed to stop the initial impact, Theoden was on the front lines and he lived the arrow attack and the first "pikes" therefore even if the orcs stayed it wouldnt have ended well due to the vast losses they will have had
