i am surprised that he uses grease to lube the pivot points. i always thought that light machine oil was best because it works itself deep into the pivots easier plus these specialty products are expensive.
As someone who has just bought two secondhand derailleur geared Marin MTBs more than forty years after last riding a three speed hub geared bicycle, I found this both helpful and interesting. I've added it to a playlist and subscribed to your channel and will be watching it again, and again. Many thanks for taking the time and trouble to make the video. Thumbs up.
To davidbosh: Don't burst a blood vessel. I dislike chemicals too, and aerosols, but sometimes they are more effective.
Keeping "green" in mind, I wouldn't push for per-fluorinated compounds, especially for hobby driver... you wouldn't want to find them in your fish, meat or water!
(or buy a rohloff speedhub to have nearly no maintenance ;-))
once you lubricate the chain, could you run it through the gears and then will that lube goes on to the freewheel, do you need to add more lube or will the lube on the chain spread throughout the freewheel
whats the best way of cleaning old grease of bottom bracket cup threads and stuff like that. I'm guessing degreaser. Is isopropyl alcohol not suitable for heavily greased parts. WHats best way to clean threads on bolts
@Lunarlaserranging Any degresser will work for bracket cups and barrings just put the parts to be degressed into a small dish and soak it. However I recommend taking your current spindle to your LBS and getting a sealed cartridge bottom bracket for about $30 and that will last alot longer and require less maintenance .
for old greasy bolts I dip a toothbrush in a bit of mineral spirits and scrub. When thats done, degrease the area, rinse, and lube all pivot points with a bit of chain lube, or waterproof
do not use the expensive crap from specialty stores or your LBS. go to any ol' hardware store and get the stuff that does the same job just as well for half the price.
also, go easy on the lube. you don't need to drown your derailleurs in it. 1/3 of what this dude put on it would have been sufficient.
If I saw any of my mechanics dump half a can of degreaser or dry lube on one derailleur they would get a serious talking to. I realize that you are promoting Finish Line products but you gain nothing by overusing either. Please "green up" your videos by using only what you need to get the job done.
Thanks for your honesty. Please remember that I need to emphasize certain aspects of the method I'm using so that they're clear to less practiced viewers. In particular, I use a very dirty derailleur, and spend time on every lubrication point, even when it's not absolutely necessary. Also note that I do try to remove as much grime as possible with a screwdriver and brushes to limit the use of degreaser. Please send me an email. I'd love to talk more, maybe offer support for shop clinics...
@caeasura OK, so I was a bit harsh in my assessment of your video and I appreciate your stating that you mechanically remove as much grime as you can before using solvents. As background, the one night of the season that I could not oversee my bike co-op, I had a volunteer unload an entire new can of DW-40 on one repair. You might be overly-sensitive after that as well. As to the recent comment directed towards me, I believe you meant to tell me not to be "anal" not anul. Thanks.
@caeasura ...yes I agree with davidbosh...you are using too much of the lubes and degreaser. Even more so the lithium grease ..you will not get the grease into the deraileur pivot pins therefore one uses wet lube and by using so much grease you are creating a muc trap for the road grit and sand to cling onto.
I swear it's not a gimmick....given the relatively low quality of the video camera I'm using, I find that the parts I'm cleaning have to be really dirty for me to see the effect of cleaning them in the video. In fact, I've been riding in the worst conditions I can find just to make everything filthy. It's killing my bike, but I do it for the love....
Thanks for the response. I talk about Finish Line products a lot, but I try to make it so that you can use products from other companies as necessary. I also try to make sure that the info is more about the bike than the products. I'm posting another set of videos in a couple of minutes, really basic ones about chain cleaning, but hopefully next week I'll be posting more technical ones about cassettes and freewheel cleaning, and freehub and freewheel lubrication.
There are lots of shops in Toronto that carry Finish Line. You might try The Cyclepath, Cycle Solutions, or Recycle Cycle, which I think is now another Cycle Solutions location. It might be a good idea to call ahead to make sure they have the item you're looking for.
Is it okay if I don't grease the derailleur afterwards and just lube?

Can you use carburetor cleaner as a degreaser? Is dry teflon spray a good lube for the chain?
