It's so beautiful to watch how physical they were in performance. Opera singers so often are thought of as staid and stoic. This video disproves that immediately. Luciano running into Joan head first, and then Joan chasing after the soldier and throwing things at him. Marvelous, especially for those of us that didn't have the good fortune to see anything they did past 86. These are jewels!
what a pleasure to see this footage...no wonder she was so loved in this role.
I wish I had seen them together in this, but fortunately I saw the 1976 Puritani at the MET...3 times in one week. My mother had never heard Joan and her jaw was hanging open at the intermission.
thank you very much for this great video, here sang together the two artists were always friends, and their voices fit together as one, beautiful voice
*ROFL* Dame Joan in a funny role?? Brilliant! didn't know she did Fille or any funny roles at all! she just doesnt look the type ;-) . any idea if somewhere out there there is a DVD of her in the role?
thank you very much coloraturafan2, this is great video and i enjoying so much to see luciano pavarotti run to sutherland so fast, incredible how athletic he was, i love him so much, and sutherland she funny too. bravo.
thank you for posting this video. finally, those of us who were not fortunate to be alive when this performance was given can see what the lucky people in the audience would have heard.
Absolutely! To witness something truly great is so rare and anyone seeing Dame Joan and Pav together was doubly blessed. I never saw them together, but saw them starting in 1969 through their prime years. What a sound they made.
This is just amazing! Its being shot from the wings isn't it? wow Thank you so much for posting this.
There is another one on this list to the left with Pavarotti singing the high Cs and you can hear it. You can't hear the Cs in this one. I love Pavarotti
(sorry it's me again) It's the ONLY video on you tube where we actually see Luciano and Joan singing in la Fille du Regiment. It is therefore very valuable. What TheInquisitive4ever says would be even better
Wow. This includes the only footage I've seen on line of Pavarotti singing the aria that made him a superstar. He begins "Pour mon ame" @ 1:47 and then it cuts to him singing some of the high C's from the infamous 9 high C's passage @ 1:57. Then it shows what I'm sure was an amazing last high C at 2:17. Man I wish I could have been there. Thanks for adding.
Could this be a video from the performance Joan mentioned in the interview you posted a few weeks ago CF. The performance where she got "winded" by Pavarotti because he came crashing into her?
That was one of the first things I thought when I saw this. Pavarotti does come running at her pretty darn fast. You can tell from this video how active they both were in these early productions.
I don't know HOW they didn't get all winded from all that running around... I particularly loved the part where Joan was waltzing with that small man (LOL), and where she was then running after him or someone of his stature threatening him. Simply hilarious.
You always bring us such RARE material. We can't thank you enough!
I think it is time to set up a Coloraturafan fan-club :-) A rarity as usual. I think Sutherland has no match in this role while in her prime. Thank you for the video!
buenisimo !!!

He's like a child, a real happy and joyful child here. God bless this "evergreen child" Pavarotti!
And, of course, Joan Sutherland who was a gift to XX century Opera!

I am not here fan, but admit her great singing skils. I think her best role was Marie (Fille du regiment), best ever!

I Love Dame Joan's voice and beautiful lines but only if her diction were as prudent as her chin.

I've heard she preferred them. She liked comic opera better and I think it showed in her voice. She sounds incredible doing comic stuff.

Above all, this video shows how effortless Big Pava looked while tossing the 9 top C's. No wonder the audience went bonkers out of pure pleasure.

At 1:56, look carefully: He sings the syllables 'Pour mon ame quel destin, J'ai sa flamme et j'ai sa main...', those are four high Cs right there!

True. We have the video at least but it true we could have the audios matching with the videos. Agreed
