His life was exciting: he fought in a big war & won it with his courage & wits. He had survived hardships & outsmarted many foes, e.g. the Cyclops.

He knows that life is only worth if you live it to the fullest. And immortalitiy means: losing this ability.

Better a mortal yet exciting life, than an eternal & boring one.

His one true love was for his beloved wife Penelope who waited for him for twenty years to return home and that is REAL ROMANTIC LOVE as well as an affirmation and confirmation of his VOW to love his wife and nobody else. That is the endearing message from The Odyssey.
