  • The best Pamina ever!!!

  • Kathleen Battle is at least 10 times better. Battle is the definitive Pamina. But Popp comes in a close second.

  • Perfection cannot be improved upon - this is enchantingly beautiful...

  • Only Mozart could write something like this - the essence of beauty. Wonderfull performance!

  • Pourquoi parler? pourquoi écrire?

Il y a là du miracle. Lucia Popp lumineuse.

  • what control over her higher range! Wow! any pp is hard but on a B flat....... Dang. Im going to go sing this now.

  • Lucia is my favorite! Beutiful on the inside and outside.

I hope you sing to the angels now.

  • Bavarian State Opera (Bayerische Staatsoper München)

  • Good heavens, what a fantastic Pamina.

  • The BEST PAMINA..... NEJLEPSI NA VZDY!!! GENIALNAJA I VECHNAJA....

  • this is the best recording of Ach Ich Fulh's... Damrau is to harsh, Te Kanawa to weak, Mofo...etc

  • This performance is not from the Vienna State opera but from the Bavarian State Opera in Germany (Bayerische Staatsoper, Munchen). It's available on DVD.

  • OMG. Absolutely stunning. So simple and yet she conveyed such anguish. Incredible control.

  • It beggars believe that when she died in 1993 she was only 54 years old! This voice represents pure emotion and makes me weep for joy. She is alslo my favorite "Queen of the Night". Mrs Poppová will never be forgotten! Thank you for posting.

  • one of the most musical performance , Popp was the best PAMINA ever

  • G-E-N-I-A-L-N-O

  • i don't know of any more beautiful aria

  • she did an amazing job

    well done

  • Speechless!! She captures every possible emotional moment! You can feel the helpless and hopelessness, her deep sadness, and her confusion all in one 5 minute aria. So simply done yet so profound! Fabulous! Outstanding! The best I've ever heard!!!

  • Wunderschöne Stimme, einfach eine perfekte Darbietung...

  • I do not recall seeing "Ach, ich fühl's" written with staccato notations.....have not seen it in years, however. Sliding into her pitches would thus be very acceptable. Mozart, regardless, is always fabulous.

  • @jelf48 ''I do not recall seeing "Ach, ich fühl's" written with staccato notations.....have not seen it in years'' you want to get out more.,

  • @jelf48 I believe it is for variety...i was always told that it it is stated twice it has to be done differently the second time. since most interpret the first statement as a cry it seems logical that the second statement be more of a tearful moan. It has been done for years now. some sopranos do it others don't. i can take it or leave it!!

  • She slides into her pitches... I think I like it, but not sure how that fits into the Mozart style... ? idk

  • @peachfuzz0523 Scooping isn't classical style, but it sounds like a nice interpretation regardless

  • delicadamente sublime

  • By the way - are you sure it's from the Vienna State Opera? There are other parts of a performance of Die Zauberflöte from Munich (1983) which look very similar (with Araiza, Brendel)

  • Yes, it's the Munich production - Bayerische Staatsoper.

  • What a beautiful performance!!! Musically, vocally, and also visually-- Popp, the set, and costumes are all gorgeous.

  • this goes in my playlist among other (wonderful) performances of the same aria, by Roschmann, Moffo and Grummer.

    My 4 favourite Paminas ever!!

  • In my opinion Lucia Popp is marvellous, with an angelical voice. She is perfect. However, I like too the Gundula Janowitz's performance in EMI's recording (Great Recordings of the century) with Otto Klemperer. /Me encanta.

  • Very beautiful...amazing voice..

But I still preferd Dorothea Roschmann version...i think her voice is more fresh...i dont know..its just me...

  • b/c dorothea is younger in her recordings but Lucia was approaching the middle of her career.

  • No it's not just you!!! I do like Roschmann too, in the 2003 production at the ROH. I like them both, in different ways.

  • Brava Brava Brava....simply perfect!!!

  • So simple and yet so well-sung!!!!! OUTSTANDING performance by an OUTSTANDING artist who had just married Peter Jonas (unless I'm sorely mistaken). Thank you VERY much for sharing this with us!!!!!

  • As far as I know she wasn't married to Peter Jonas but to Georg Fischer and Peter Seiffert.

Nevertheless an outstanding performance by one of the best artist this world has ever seen imho.

    Thanks for sharing.

    All the best

  • Sooooooo beautiful! I love her voice!

  • lovely version

  • lucia popp may sing this better than any other soprano, but for me, i just respond to dorothea roschmann more. it's more emotional.

  • It´s wonderful. She´s the best of all.

  • Beautiful!

  • Such a uniquely beautiful sound *sigh*

  • 100% she is the best Pamina ever,

    Dr. Lubov Laura De Valois

  • An ocean of beauty. Ah, Lucia, how much we miss you.

  • She is the best Pamina ever!!!!!!!

  • Is her her german correct? I want to make sure I am learning it right.

  • You have as german to mention, that you become fast aware of that she isn't from Germany, but she does it wonderfull!

  • it's okay, but not completely correct. maybe you should listen do diana damrau singing this. i've never heard this aria by her (it's what i'll do next...), but surely she does very well and she's a native speaker...

  • understood thanks! :D

  • damrau's pamina is WONDERFUL! but, i'm biased. she's my favorite current soprano.

  • Her german is really good! Of course you can't understand every word while she's singing, but that doesn't matter. Her pronounciation is absolutely correct, and I think her singing is also really beautiful!

  • my favourite pamina. Her sound is so balanced and beautiful

  • What a range! Brava!

  • Lucia Popp is my girl!! She's my idol and my professor says that I am quite like her! :D

  • kann mir irgendjemand den vollen liedtext geben? ich finde ihn nicht und ich versetehe ehrlich gesgat nicht alles was sie da singt..

    brauch ihn unbedingt.

    vielen dank!

  • Ach ich fühls, es ist entschwunden -

    Ewig hin der Liebe Glück!

    Nimmer kommt ihr, Wonnestunden,

    Meinem Herzen mehr zurück.

    Sieh Tamino, diese Tränen

    Fliessen Trauter, dir allein.

Fühlst du nicht der Liebe Sehnen,

So wird Ruh im Tode sein.

  • She has a pianissimo that positively gives me chills!

  • I agree

  • Absolutely beautiful.

  • Lovely!

  • By far the best version of this aria I've heard so far.

  • With no doubt one of the greatest Pamins ever!

  • I am so cheesy for saying this but I carry a picture of her on the cover of my Theory folder to keep me inspired and lift my spirits. Her voice is so beautiful I am at a loss for words...

  • That is too cute, Im sure it works. =)

  • She's a lovely light soprano,

    beautiful.

  • percect interpretation

  • i have a video of the met production in 1990, and i that tenor looks an awful lot like the on in that production... his name escapes me... but he was terrible in it.

  • any chance of loading the video up? say torrent.

    just wondering.

    cheers.

  • That subtle hand gesture of resignation at the end has me in tears every time.

  • Beautiful...

  • Lucia and her singing^^

  • this is so incredibly beautifuly sung... and such a middle voice!

  • oh ok sorry then

  • I have listened to it and I have over 20 CDs with her singing on them and have read numerous articles on her. An Amazing singer, but her voice did go through many different phases. Check out the wikipedia article on her, It is quite good.

  • Just out of curiosity. How many of you are here because of wikipedia?

  • Check

  • Popp actually cycled through voice types. She started as a soubrette, and then moved into light lyric repetoire, and ultimately ended up doing some lyric coloratura roles that are on the lighter side. At this point in her career she was singing light lyric roles and her voice sounds like a light lyric.

  • And later, she even added lyric Wagnerian roles to her repertoire!

  • She added Eva. It's a Lyric Roll and not really like most Wagner.

  • She also sang Elsa, another lyric role (with some dramatic music).

  • That would be interesting to hear. I also have her as the first Rinemadien.

  • That sounds lovely. And how many others (there must be some) have made this progression: Barbarina-Cherubino-Susannah-Contessa in Mozart's "Figaro"?

  • that thing you said about her c***

  • that is a revolting thing to say. we don't need to hear that kind of talk on YouTube.

  • Lucia Popp, one of the best female singer. Why she must die so young?

  • fantastic reading of this aria... its so amazing to listen to a true coloratura soprano to be able to sing pamina with a such a full voice... most coloraturas sing this aria dreadfuly due to lack of middle-voice support... Lucia is divine

  • coloratura? she's actually a light lyric soprano, i heard

  • listen to her queen of the night... be ready to change your mind!!

  • change my mind about what?

  • Light lyric coloratura soprano just means a very light and bright operatic voice (light timbre for that matter) that should reach a minimum of D6.

  • oh my god, for me the best pamina. I also like the Janovitz's pamina.

  • Wow,wow, wow!Oh my God.She is singing like an angel, love her!

  • your right, she does have a beautiful voice

  • i got directed from wiki 2 lol

  • I just got directed here from a wikipedia link from the voice type 'lyric colortura soprano'. Can anyone explain the term to me better than wiki did plz?

  • Wikipedia said she was a "light lyric soprano" which is at odds with what you are saying. I suggest you revisit Wikipedia for the defeinitions of the voice types. Their examples are excellent to my mind. If you think you can improve Wikipedia's definitions, then please go ahead and update the Wikipedia article.

  • I miss her.

  • asi deben cantar los angeles!!! como la hermosa lucia popp

  • bravaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

  • she sings the best pamina. what amazes me still is her beautiful queen of the night aria. insane!

  • I love her queen of the night and I like Battle's Pamina better......

  • I think Malin Hartelius is better.

I'm having a concert tommorow and I'm singing this :)

  • Unfortunately she misses a few harmonycs when she goes up in the higher notes (very strange. Also, a bit strange you can see her smiling at some point ('allein') during this aria while this is certainly not what needs to happen. I prefer Sophie Karthäuser's version.

  • She missed a few harmonics? I think i know what you mean but it's very harsh like critique.

I don't think she "smiles" during the performance, that's just the way how singers project better (well, some school say it's better!) their voices: To draw up the 2 cheeks. And it looks like if they are smiling but they are not!

  • Where she misses a few harmonics? what did vctvi mean?

  • The "smiling" is not for projection. There are muscles under the cheeks that when lifted, also involuntarily help lift the soft palet. The soft palet has to be kept lifted for resonance.

  • it is ok! pamina is totally out of her mind, and sometimes crazy people laugh when they are in pain. I like it...

besides, this aria goes up and down and she mantains her beautiful face without tricks. For me the best PAMINA EVER!

  • @vctvi what you percieve as a "smile" is actually a technique used so that the vowel doesn't pull too forward and subsequently ruin the tone quality.

  • Listening to Lucia Popp perform this aria has always made cry, because you can feel the raw emotion of this aria in her voice. She is Pamina!!! I believe that if she had lived in the same time period as Mozart that he would have cast her in this role w/o hearing any other performers.

  • She's... perfect.

  • vielleicht die beste pamina aller zeiten.....

  • She made it all appear so easy...... the word "beautiful" doesn't do justice.

  • She was the perfect soprano. Truly the perfect voice

  • Yes, she is great. One of the best Pamina's ever.

  • Her voice gives me shivers (the positive ones). She is indeed one of the best Pamina's. She was voted as one of the top twenty sopranos in BBC music magazine.

  • Her voice gave me the good shivers too. I had to watch this video twice. She is indeed the best Pamina!! Beautiful as an angel's.

  • Don't take this magazine that seriously, it's pure crap. We don't need to be told what to believe or listen to.

  • I am fully aware of that, I was only giving an example that many other people (inlcuding BBC music) like Lucia. I am not being told anything; I have loved Lucia since I was a little girl, seen as she is one of my mum's absolute favourite singers (she has even seen her live, that lucky woman...)

  • I think when Mozart wrote this arie, he had the image of this voice in his mind...

  • Such a beautiful voice. I have listened to many of the recordings of this aria on youtube but this one is by far the best. Lucia was one of the best sopranos of the 20th century.

  • By the way, I think it would be fair enough to say that Lucia has been one of the greatest Paminas, ever. If not THE best

  • This is my favourite version of Zauberfolte....Papageno is also great. I´d like to share with you some other scenes of this version, but I don´t know how to do it, and I´ve got the DVD

  • I cried at the "Pa..Pa..Pa" duet with Papagino and Papagina. They were adorable! Could there be a more perfect expression of love, hope, and joy? When the little girl runs out across the stage at the end and Papagina catches her, oh, my heart just died at the beauty of it all.

  • yes, it´s quite beautifull. I just think it can´t get any better than that! this particular version has some great and funny things, like at the end of the "Pa..Pa..Pa" duet, when there is a moment of silence, Papageno looks back, sees all his children....and gasps!

  • Love this music, this voice, this person, this memory.

  • Amazing! Thanks so much for sharing this video!

  • This is the best production of Zauberflote and Lucia is wonderful in this role. We all miss you Lucia!

  • Just beautiful. God bless you, Lucia.

  • That's how this is supposed to go. What a sensation! I MISS HER SO MUCH!
