My Taylor catalog states that it is made of 1095,I also have the SCHF8 and it is made of 1070 as stated in the 2011 Taylor LLC.catalog;it's one of I think 3 knives that Taylor brands uses 1095 for.
Knife co.'s will change the metal if even on the same model;for instance my 16 year old Buck nighthawk is much better than today because mine was made of 650c back then and now they're made of 440c or it's equivalent.Japan is going nuts right now because they're going to have to raise the price of their vehicles because China is buying all that Australian and Brazilian steel but won't raise the worth of their money into a world market, thus the reason for all these slave labor made knives.
Most comprehensive review I've seen on this knife... good job. I got one a month ago and love it. Mine is 1095 according to all the sources I checked out. How has it been holding up?
Schrade knives have always been a good choice for those who didn't have the bread to spend on Case or Buck because unlike others they still commonly use a high carbon steel which is better than high alloy stainless like 420 or 440A so what you have is durability and the ability to hold an edge even after abusive use such as chopping at branches or boning etc.If you buy a knife make sure if you buy stainless at least make sure it's 440C or something incorporating vanadium.A dull knife is what?
@germanguy69 Well, either they changed it, or TK got it wrong. My source is not a magazine, which by the way, every single Blade, TK and Knives Illustrated mag I have ever read had many mistakes in it (I sub to all of them), my source is the maker of the blades (Morgan Taylor of Taylor Brands):
"these are Taiwanese made. The SCHF7, SCHF8 and SCHF9 are the 1070 high carbon steel."
So. I dont know who to believe. The maker, or Tactical knives, who never ever make mistakes.
@QuietBearr (Note that some early Schrade sales literature mistakenly identified the SCHF9’s blade steel as 1070, but Taylor Brands, LLC has assured TK that it is, in fact, 1095.)
@germanguy69 No its 1070, at least this years where. That comes from the maker and from Taylor Brands. You should realize that sometimes you dont know everything.
@QuietBearr If you reference the 2010 Archived Catalog directly from Talyor Brands LLC's website and scroll through their flash catalog, you will see that it is listed as 1095 High Carbon Steel. You can also reference Equip2Endure's video on the exact same knife as being 1095 High Carbon Stainless Steel. No harm no foul, we all make mistakes :)
@billyshob I referenced Morgan Taylor, who I talked to personally who told me it was 1070. Agreed no harm no foul, just saying, he got it wrong, not I.
If you pop the rivet that holds the plastic insert out you can pull the insert out, and reverse it to make the sheath for left-handed carry (they showed this in the 4-page article in Tactical Knives Magazine).
Why do alot of reviews on products have little "theme song" segments does anyone really care about what song you have in a knife review? Does someone say "HELL YA I LOVE THIS SONG Im going to buy this knife now" I guess cause its a personal review you can do what ever the hell you wan't lol so I guess I just answered my own question
@brannonlost The reason why I put an intro to my videos is a lot of websites re-broadcast the videos I make without putting the description or even who it was made by. I even saw one give credit to someone else for my work. This way it is much harder for them to remove my name from them.
yup ur 100% right man dont want people ripping off ur work I thought about that after I commented at first I just thought "whats up with the none related theme songs on everyones reviews" but ya lol at least its not like 50 cent or something for an intro lolol (now Im going to get hate from all the rap fans out there)
@magnusXbane If you want kydex it is simple to make yourself to your own specs I plan on doing it you can see how its done in some of the great videos on youtube and buy the supplies and tools needed they are cheaper then you would think try out the knife kits website for the things you need. The supplies needed are the kydex, rivets , the rivet punches ,some sheath making foam to press it you dont need the press just use some wood and clamps and use a toaster oven to heat it up and a drill.
@madogblue Its all about preference really. The school of thought was that stainless is fine, but if you are ok with managing rust, the non stainless steel will usually be easier to sharpen, tougher, and likely cheaper as well. But with todays new stainless's, really, its all personal preference, although to be honest I would still hand the toughness factor in steels to the non stainless. Thats why competitive choppers are almost always non stainless. (frequently L6)
i like all the sheath options, not a big fan of nylon but this one seems good. As for the grind as long as it is around 3/4ths the way or more it seems to work well, the half grinds like ka-bars dont seem to work as good, so i believe this knife would work pretty good. might pick one up
I dig this knife. Has kind of a bolo shape to it doesn't it. Is there any reason they didn't bring the grind all the way back to the spine? That's usually better in a survival oriented blade in my experience.
Nutn thinks it is better, and thus why people on youtube think its better, but in reality, a full flat grind makes a weaker edge, since there is less steel behind it.
So technically, a partial flat grind is better for survival since it has a stronger edge.
Nutn thinks its better because he says it can bind when batoning, but in my experience it batons and splits better because it has a larger wedge shape.
A full flat slices better, but doesn't split better.
I wont comment on Nutn's opinions, but when I bought my first full flat ground knife (a RAT-7, if it makes any difference) I noticed it went through wood significantly easier than my previous "conventional" shaped knives. Not just batoning, either. Limbing trees and whatnot was a breeze with that thing, compared to my similarly sized usmc Ka-Bar, for example. I find the flat sections on knives like that ka-bar tend to get stuck in tougher sections of wood quite easily.
That all depends on how thick it is. I would say though for a survival knife, it is better to have a stronger edge than a weaker one, I think we can all agree on that.
A full flat slices easier, but I would prefer a stronger edge in a survival blade, as a dull or harder to slice knife is better than a broken one.
I'm really glad you like the design. I think They did a great job at bringing it to life. In all honesty the thumb ramp comes into play in only a few uses and. When I switched my sheath to left handed I drilled out the rivet and just turned the insert around and replaced the rivet with a chicago screw.
Thanks for the good review of the knife, I hope you enjoy it.
Yea, I am not a lefty, but I know that lefties are always having to do gear modification to make it right, and I knew that it wouldnt be a big deal to switch it around, I was pretty sure just by playing around, that you could pop that rivet out and just flip the plastic insert around, or you can just slide it in backwards because of the adjustable retention strap, that works too lol
Like I said in you other video... a good friend of mine designed that knife. Schrade did a great job producing it. Nice review... you are very thorough.
oh, woops, i looked on the taylor brands website but i didn't see it there and i sorta forgot about the description =] but i like how u do reviews on affordable knives, cause i dislike it when someone shows a really cool knife but it turns out to be $300
No it doesnt without modification, I thought of that too, and actually mentioned that in like the first run of the review, but I re-recorded it because things kept happening lol. Camera fell over, phone rang, door knocked, lol. So I started over and forgot to mention that there is a rivet holding it in place.
But you could remove the rivet and mod it yourself (lefties)
That's one badass mofo. Looks like a good chopper and batoner too. Excellent price. Be even better if the grind was full flat. Bevels get in the way and reduce cutting ability.
i love all those options for the sheath, i like the sheath more than the knife....so far, i don't think the knife is very special (said before i knew the price, and i still don't at this moment, so if it's high value, i don't know) i'm not saying the knife sucks, i think it's cool, but not as cool as the sheath =]
I saw the NOSS destruction on this bad boy and was amazed. Your review, which takes in the other properties of the blade, makes me seriously consider getting one. I would probably have a better sheath made though.
