Big Daddy Kane is one of greatest rappers that ever lived. However The Prince of Darkness album destroyed his reputation and career. His status in hip was never the same after that album. Kane is a legend but could possibly been the best rapper period.
saw a documentary on him today . very interesting articulate guy. Enterouge spoke about how he would do 8 women a night on the road . wow . now he is married.also how doing so many songs for women like this woman hurt is image or marketability.
@apesoul o7. wtf u talking about? he took pictures with madonna, He never danced for her. ignornat folks like u piss me off. Get your facts straight. Many rappers now were infuenced by him. For example Biggie and Jay Z. Dam!!
@sparro75 yea dat nigga was 1 of madonnas gay dancers he did a 3sum wit madonna and sum otha fag dats why the hip hop nation turned dere bak on his ass
It was almost like Kane was becoming too mature for hip-hop in the 90's, and going the R&B route which was the other way a emcee was going if not the gangsta route.
ehhh. po thang. he just didnt make the cut. most 80s artist didnt last in the 90s. thats just the way it is.
da game changed in the 90's. Braggadocios rhymes was out, and gangsta was in. Almost all the emcee's that done it either (as they say) fell off, or was in the undaground. If Kane had went the gangsta route talking about things that he didn't do what would we be saying about Kane in the 90's. He was talking about what he knew.
@djshow56 and even though he didn't last I give him much respect homeslice. Just take a look at the Rap fools nowadays. Although lot of them know the ghetto they just take it too far and make morons of themselves with their routine rap about hootchies, money and credibility. It's sad to see where Hip Hop has gone. From legendary acts like Big Daddy Kane or Grandmaster Flash who described the ghetto life in a comprehensive way to idiots like Soulja Boy or Slim Thug
People think he didn't sell well when Taste of Chocolate album came out in 1990, but it actually sold pretty well, it just didn't go RIAA Gold.
Same with his 1991 album Prince of Darkness, had a few hits like:
The lover in you
Raw 91
Ohh, aah, naa, naa, naa
I think were the only single releases from that album. But still sold around 300,000 copies. As you see BDK got money from it and kept on steppin, but just had two gold records with long live the Kane and It's a BDK thing
Prince Pop life....I thought Prince didn't let his songs be sampled??? anymore songs that sample Prince? I heard a lil wayne song sample diamond and pearls but that was jus on a mixtape.
aww dam man i cant believe you informed me of that. i had no idea this was a Prince sample. dammit i thought it was pure Big Daddy Kane genius. i mean he's still a good rapper and i like the song but i thought it was original, not a dam Prince sample. bummer...
@amck72 - You are straight stupid. I have produced songs with no sample being used. You sound whack as fuck saying no hip hop is original + some type of sample involved. Many songs that are good have samples, but no not all.
@assmuncher1984 haha those two songs do have samples, goes to show how much knowledge u have, very little. I`m not surprised with someone with a user name like yours
@amck72 - Thanks for doing your research. By the way, ones name has nothing to do with their intelligence level. Grow up, get educated and preach to others who are ignorant. Like me doing to you.
@mxpassion17 - You sound immature repeating facts you've read on the internet. Marley Marl produced his first album and other songs in his other CD's BDK did produce beats. He produced most of his second album, "It's A Big Daddy Thing" released in 1989 - Good songs from the album are: It's A Big Daddy Thing Mortal Combat Another Victory Young, Gifted, & Black Smooth Operator Wrath of Kane I Get The Job Done Warm It Up Kane Rap Summary Since 1989 BDK has produced beats, to answer your question.
When I first heard this song, I didn't like it. I thought The BDK had changed, the game had changed and I wasn't going with it. Now, with the way rap is now, I wish I had went with it.
Nigga through that Dominique Wilkins line in on some player shit. Lyrical as fuck but the song never did it for me. But it still is better than most of today. Just because of the lyrics
you no the kane about as smooth as they get if not the smoothest ,i been a fan since back in the days aint no hafe steppin this song says it all true at the fullest joker 18st
Long live the Kane, but tracks like this kind of killed his career as his albums sales-wise blew and he kind of thought that the success would continue after It's a Big Daddy Thing if he would go r&b and tried to portray different persona's... I respect that, but he should have focused more on the microphone.
Turth is this was the beginning of the end as BDK being an sought after rapper. I actually thought this song was a winner, but I guess when you're looked at a certain way, changing up shit can hurt you.
He worked with him closely at Paisley Park and my cousin is gayer than Gaye Gayerson. He told me that Prince always had women with him. During that time he was fucking Kim Bassinger, and number of other sexy honeys, including his future wife, Mayte. The only thing that he loves more than women is his music. He ate and slept music according to my cousin. Prince keeps a bedroom in his private studio for two things, dreaming music and fucking beautiful women.
Prince purposely did these things because he wanted fans from all walks of life that reflected his music and ideology. Now you will probably say, well what about that song, "If I Was Your Girlfriend". That song sounds gay! However that song was about his relationship with Susannah Melvoin (Wendy's twin sister), comparing his relationship to theirs. Prince has never sung a song or acted as though he was gay onstage or off. My cousin worked for Prince as a technician during the 90's.
Furthermore, the reason why Prince played the androgynous card was to appeal to all of his audience, that includes homosexuals. You have to please your entire fan base when it comes to music. That is the only way to make money in this business. However, have you ever seen Prince actually acting gay on stage? His songs were freaky in the early days but he was always singing about women and his love and lust for them. Wendy and Cat simulating giving head to Prince on stage? That's not gay!
just to voice my opinion on the issue of kane calling prince gay. it does,nt matter.everone is entitled to their opinion. and for the record i said price is gay and sweet looking, but i love and purchase all his albums.
I think this video will be removed because of Prince. He has been taking down ppls account who upload his clips and music on youtube for a few years. Hes not gay, but a stingy purple bastard. Love his music though.
Prince won't and can't take this down. Kane paid Prince years ago to sample this piece for his song. So Prince has no jurisdiction over it. Now Prince did have the Hindu Love Gods taken down for his song Raspberry Beret because he was never paid for it's use. It's not fair to come down on Prince that way about his music. When Michael Jackson owned The Beatles songbook and a number of other artists music, no one cursed him for it. Prince is only trying to protect his music for corporate greed.
Prince may be trying to protect his music from corporate greeed, but corporate greed does'nt share music on youtube or any free network/sharing sites and the purple dude is making those who love to share his good music suffer and thats not right. We cant enjoy Vanity 6, The Time, The Family, or any artists associated with him while on WB/Paisley Park because of Prince. Although Prince was paid by Big Daddy Kane to use the sample, Prince may still try to have this taken down cause its his 1st.
Big Daddy Kane is a fucking hypocrite. He used to talk about Prince being a fag, yet he samples one of his songs. I hope Prince was paid big time for this!
That's still hypocritical in my book. Not respecting the man but using his music to gain a profit is not cool, but like I said Prince has been paid royalties for the sampling of his music by many so-called artists. So more power to him.
You're entitled to your opinion and I respect that. But calling someone gay is different than saying you dont like someone. Kane just stated his opinion on prince's sexual preference, I dont see that as being hypocritical. Its like me saying "big daddy kane is black" and then I go sample his music.
This is what Kane said back in the day about Prince in the late 80's when Prince came out with the Lovesexy album, and I quote, "Fuck Prince he looks like a motherfuckin faggot! End quote. Now what if Prince said, Fuck that black ass nigger to him!? That's more than stating opinions, those would be homophobic and racist insults. Use your head pbee! You don't sample someone's music you have absolutely no respect for just to make a profit!
To be honest I didnt know what he exactly said... But I guess that clarifies it and I stand corrected. You made it sound as if he only called him "gay" and nothing else.
I love this song so much. This track is similar to one of prince's songs from back in the 80's called "Pop Life". But big daddy kane had remixed this into a rap version.
Put your feet up here my dear so I can lick up on your toes until your revlon disappear LMAO. Kane is one of the greatest hands down I love this song.
Damn, why did not so many mc's survive the 90's??? BDK is like one of the best... still! KRS One, LL and maybe Rakim that survived if u know what i mean. KRS And LL are still alive in the 00 but LL is pretty much fake these days. KRS One is ill and got real skillz that killz...still! PEACE TO BDK!
are you kidding? when I was a teenager this song was playing everywhere. it's not slept on. it's just the younger generation doesn't know about this. this album is almost 20 years old. it's like my generation knowing about the delfonics or something. it's before your time. you gotta look for it.
the muthafuckin best lyricist in hip hop then and now, even when this brother kicking love songs, he still rips shop to shreds!theres a BDK concert in toronto next month, get the ticketsd while you can
Hot Daymnmmm...... They don't make rap like dis no more, do they ? Compared to the crap that's out there now.....This is TALENT. What's the site to download this song ? This is a classic

I love this song so much. This track is similar to one of prince's songs from back in the 80's called "Pop Life". But big daddy kane had remixed this into a rap version.
mochalattejanae23 2 years ago
He didn't "remix" it into a "rap version", he sampled and looped it, there's a difference.

The king of rap...I'm serious but I know that some think Rakim or Nas are the best.I simply can't choose for real, but he is my favorite.
locyka19 2 years ago 2
Damn, why did not so many mc's survive the 90's??? BDK is like one of the best... still! KRS One, LL and maybe Rakim that survived if u know what i mean. KRS And LL are still alive in the 00 but LL is pretty much fake these days. KRS One is ill and got real skillz that killz...still! PEACE TO BDK!

are you kidding? when I was a teenager this song was playing everywhere. it's not slept on. it's just the younger generation doesn't know about this. this album is almost 20 years old. it's like my generation knowing about the delfonics or something. it's before your time. you gotta look for it.
notadjfor1 2 years ago
Agreed. Big Daddy Kane was one of my favorite rappers. He just did his own thing and had his own style.

I guess it depends on where you live because they didn't play this in Virginia. You might heard it every blue moon but not like they should have...

He's playing the smooth woman lover that understands women instead of the macho womanhater to get into her pants :) But it helps...
