@MrSghirat No. But it's a great film because it reveals a lot about those who love or hate it. All great films should but by no means is it the best. Oh, and dump your girlfriend bro.
Haven't watched the movie yet, but that is is a subject to change... Guess there still are crazy people left who chase their dreams. @oONodokaOo I follow a very similar path right now... @ForgottenRomantic How true!! I feel exactly the same, once you are infected with Japan there is no way back. This country has something special the other coutries don't have! The only good things about this movie were the visuals, the Kevin Shields soundtrack, and Bill Murray. Don't watch the awful movie, just watch this video.
@Wampaa I dunno, there's plenty of artsy films that I love and plenty that I don't love. This isn't even that artsy of a movie. "Awful" might have been an overstatement, it's probably worth watching just based on the three things I listed.
@leavantgarage Aguirre: The Wrath of God, Koyaanisqatsi, Pi, Blue Velvet, Mulholland Drive to name a few. I don't think of them as "art" though, just excellent fucking movies.
I bet so many posers are going around in Tokyo every night listening to this song in a cab ride after a couple vodka-tonics in a karaoke bar and then lay around in their underwear putting up mobiles and knitting scarves
I'm glad I"m not the only one who's been affected by this movie. The soundtrack changed my perspective and introduced me to a whole new kind of culture. Not to mention made me fall in love with Japan. To those who have made it work over there, I'm jealous :-p
I thought that nobody could ever figure out a window in the evening with a song like this.Coppola pulled out an emotion that no one has ever pulled off
@viperchris34 Complete nonsense. Their entire catalog copies the EXACT sound of this song. You can give whatever excuse you want for Corgan forming the band, but his mimicry of this sound is blatant. Is that simple enough for YOU?
@DarthProg wow that's quite a bold claim. What exactly was copied? Just wondering what's on your mind, because quite clearly you have no clue about anything relates to The Smashing Pumpkins catalog (lol) or to what "their entire sound" means.
Truly one of the most beautiful songs written. The perfect example of how simplicity and atmosphere mixed together can create a song so emotional without sounding forced at all. I haven't heard a song that encapsulated the melancholy and atmosphere of a film as beautifully and perfectly as it did in Lost In Translation.
@DarthProg Although I feel bad for entering into a debate in no way relevant to this video, I have to take this bait.
I don't believe in 'ripping off''. There is only using well, and using poorly. The smashing pumpkins by there own admission were formed by Corgan out of his frustration at the bands around him being influenced out of sounds and genres. He said the Pumpkins were incredibly difficult to form because they were based on an idea, not a sound. Re: official boxset unofficial interview
@viperchris34 Sorry, but I'm unable to decipher any meaning in what you just wrote. "influenced out of sounds and genres" What does that even mean??
All I'm saying is that the Smashing Pumpkins clearly based their entire sound on THIS very song. It's blatant and obvious. Whether it's "used" "well" or "poorly" could be debated.
I've read your post three times now and still don't understand your point.
@mustbejames1 Sorry, but you're wrong. The Smashing Pumpkins formed as a band around the time this song was being written. And their first major release came out 2 years after this song. My Bloody Valentine formed in 1983. Thanks for playing.
@NextGenRev This movie changed my life to an unbelievable extent. It made me take japanese at university. Then I studied it very hard and I loved it (yeah, even kanji!) @pineapplepeanuts I went to Niigata University (north-west Honshu). My home university is located in Nantes, France. Don't worry, it's never too late to take part in an exchange program! I'm sure if you give everything and never give up your dream, it will be worth the effort. It was for me!
@oONodokaOo Interesting - I've got a friend who's Japanese currently living in France on a cultural exchange. For some reason when i listen to this song i always imagine a couple of kids walking through a city as an enormous mass of pink fog forms behind them...
who know that suffering for love could be put into such a beautiful blizz of distorted emotion
First time I heard this song in the movie I felt like crying, gave me a very odd feeling (in a good way). I'm glad this video is back, instantly favourited it.
I wonder what the geniuses have done for us to make a film with such an original screenplay all accopagned by a sublime soundtrack and a wonderful photography ...?
I love definitly your tribute to one of the most beautiful dramatic romance ever made and evocative of what is hapiness, close frienship, hope and sadness between two human beings.
Thanks to you and to everyone who contributed to the realisation of this project who is certainly very valuable to me.
It's kinda funny that the japaneese guy playing the fake guitar is playing a fake fender jazzmaster (one of the main guitars used for recording loveless, and the picture on the front of the album)
Amazing film all around. Leaves us enough for our imagination, yet shows us enough to get a conversation going. Not laugh out loud funny, yet very amusing at times. Sad, interesting, you name it. One of the best of the 2000's.
Loveless is my favoirite album in the entirety of music ever created. I had no idea that it would be in this film and when the song suddenly came on, I was in a state of complete euphoria.
truly incredible song. my favorite song ever. so many memories come back when i listen to this song...of being in the city with the one i loved most, and feeling so free.
Japan is fun to visit, place is amaizing, (I been there in 97- 98) but a nightmare to live and work in, from what I hear from native Japanese. Too many restrictions, regulations, etc.
I love the way it is all about service, japanese speak little and seem a bit introverted, but they are really nice and thoughtfull if you get to know them. In USA and other western/southern cultures, people are loud & obnouxsious.
I love being served 110%, its profesional, confidential and exceeds expectations.
@shiganono22 i agree. i'm from Japan but I grew up in Hawaii for the past 7 years. I am now too used to the life style and attitude in hawaii. i don't belong in japan anymore. its too oppressing in japan. yes, cities like tokyo are definitely entertaining but when you stay there for long time enough, you'll see it's all fake.
Tune written by a genius. Nobody knows the actual lyrics of this song. If anybody thinks they do please mail me. By the way I have done a cover on myspace desleesongs just google desleesongs if u care
im from jpn so im so used to these flashy things but i can relate to scarlett johansson. idky tho. everyone feels alone anywhere. i see a thousand holes in everyone. oops its not about mbv lol
When LOVELESS was released at the end of 91, I remember listening the cassette more than 10 times a day.I was having a very nervous breakdown and I did believe that the songs had been written to ease my sufferings.Almost eighteen years after, I am still fond of this record, one of the best ever produced in the 90's.And the movie is great as well, the filming really matches the music.
@Volren2 Exactly!! It keeps sucking you in to play it louder. My roommates tell me of a time i came home at 4 am really pissed and blew the house speakers because "I still couldn't HEAR it".

Im japanese.
I agree with your japanese friend.
I think Japan is fun to travel.but its hard to live and work in Japan.
I hope many people come to japan to travel.and enjoying it.
Im not good at English sorry.

Close my eyes
Feel me now
I don't know how you could not love me now
You will know, with her feet down to the ground
Over there, and I want true love to grow
You can't hide, oh no, from the way I feel

When LOVELESS was released at the end of 91, I remember listening the cassette more than 10 times a day.I was having a very nervous breakdown and I did believe that the songs had been written to ease my sufferings.Almost eighteen years after, I am still fond of this record, one of the best ever produced in the 90's.And the movie is great as well, the filming really matches the music.

The soundtrack made this movie. It suited the Tokyo landscape and mood so amazingly well it sent a chill down my spine the first time I watched.

@Volren2 Exactly!! It keeps sucking you in to play it louder. My roommates tell me of a time i came home at 4 am really pissed and blew the house speakers because "I still couldn't HEAR it".
