Obviously you haven't been to a dance record store lately... oh wait, there are barely any left anywhere. Digital is the format for DJ's now. As much as I hate that fact (I am a vinyl DJ) it is true. Also, just because it is digital does not mean that the beats are auto locked. The 'loops' you mention are part of whole songs he is playing. The fact that you think he is pressing some kind of buttons to make the beats gives credit to DJ Dans skills.

I remember watching DJ Dan work it many a time (back when you could actually crowd the DJ table & see something). The thing is, if you're not an aspiring DJ, & you can't see what records he's playing, or how he's syncing the beats, or working the switches (which you can't from that distance), ignore the DJ & interact with the music & folks. This is the old guitar god paradigm coming to the underground. I think these kids are trying to relive what we had but they don't even get the spirit.

People actually have fun and dance with each other, and do crazy shit, there's stuff going on in every direction. Lot of the time the DJ is hidden in a box or behind a curtain. What is cool about watching a guy spin records? This looks like a rock concert, not a dance party. There's nothing "cool" about what's happening in this video.
