Well, it's personal obviously, but I think the first 2 albums - Camel and Mirage - are the best, and then they probably got less good with each successive album. I preferred the rock stuff. As they became increasingly jazzy, I felt they lost their edge. I saw them 3 times in the 70s - would have seen this tour. I loved Camel - Mirage is one of my favourite records. But that jazzy direction - was never going to be commercial for them.
@firestart66 Ah, you see, that's where you're wrong... Richard Sinclair came into the band because Camel wanted to move AWAY from progrock and into jazzier stuff. Doug Ferguson wanted to "stay with the prog". Just for clarification: Andy Ward (who never sang in the band, with the exception of Arstillius, where he talks very fast backwards) said that Sinclair had a beautiful singing voice. The point is: Without Doug, Andrew and Pete couldn't work together, and THAT'S a shame.
I agree with many things that you guys say here.Camel is one of my favourite progressive rock groups and it will stay as the number one!All the band members are brilliant.Sinclair had nice voice but Latimer's were more melodic.Andy Ward-the best drummer ever!!just watch what sound he does at 0:35
No... more or less between 1700 1800 BEFORE JESUS CHRIST...
I want that Rain Dance ...I ve got since 2002 the great Moonmadness... and recently i have bought their "Breathless" album...at first i did not like it ...but "Breathless" diserve much more attention and it grows with subtility ...they made a big jump stylistically in only Two years...so...i want that Rain dances... is it the first sign of an addiction to Camel ?
Hey, don't pick on them, just for having "caravan's bassplayer" or so. That really doesn't matter. Their music and particularily this one is great. Whoever the bassplayer is. They do a great piece of music, like YES or GENESIS or who else from that area. It really is a pity that there are no new bands like that today.
The only reason for Sinclaire was Ward wanted a jazzier feel. I spoke to Andy Lat about Breathless and he liked maybe two-three songs on the entire l,p. No wonder with silly lyrics like DOTF and Sinclaire singing lead on the title track.Camel never needed a lead vocalist and maybe gave in under record producer pressure. In any event Andy Lat wrote and played much of the bass parts for RainDances.
I'm sorry, but I'll have to disagree with you. He doesn't have a bad voice, but IMHO it doesn't go good with Camel. It works in Caravan, but not Camel. I agree that "Never Let Go" is best with Sinclair, but not because of the vocals, but because of the Hammond solo and the technical skills of the band.
Sinclair had left Caravan in '71 or '72. Formed Hatfield And The North right after and kept with them until '76. He joined Camel in '77. So nobody nicked anybody from nobody.
Isnt it amazing how these older bands used to inter-mingle with one another? Bill Brufford, Robert Fripp, Alan Holdsworth, etc. in bands like Yes, King Crimson, UK, Asia.....
I love Doug's bass, but when I first saw Richard on the back of Raindances, it was a very happy moment. it didn't always work out, but it really did for me on this song. The studio version is much better of course....but thanks for posting!
Camel es sin duda una banda que tiene unos musicos impecables. tienen un sonido y una coordinacion envidiable y eso hace que sea una tremenda banda, no puedo dejar de escuchar sus discos, tienen el mejor sonido de todos (a mi gusto).
This was recorded at the hippodrome in 1977 sight and sound bbc2/radio2 simoultaniously 2 hors later they performed a sell out concert at the hammersmith odeon!
This is the first song of the album "Rain Dances" (1997). It's the last Bardens record with Camel. Mel Collins, who formed earlier King Crimson, comes back in the 1984 album "Stationary Traveller". Bardens is talented, an excelent guitarrist and composer, also flautist, drummer, bassist and more...
O, yes, you're right. I'm sorry. Read it like that: this is the last good record of Bardens in Camel. I don't like "Breathless" so much. Too "poppie" for me.
it's 1977, not 1997 and Latimer is the "talented, an excelent guitarrist and composer, also flautist, drummer, bassist and more... ", not Bardens. Mel Collins FORMED King Crimson?
Another mistake! What I was thinking? You're right too (1977, not 97 and Latimer, not Bardens). Mel Collins was a member of KC, in the second album, and a guest star in "Red". In this case, I used "formed" incorrectly, perhaps: Collins is not founder of KC. My english is precarious, I know. But I've tried. Are you ready for read an excellent comment in spanish? ;oD
As time goes on I only like Camel more.

Loved this clip. I read afterwards that at first is the moog wasn't working properly so Peter played the opening keyboard phrase on the organ instead.
At 2:20 the damn thing started to play but was tottaly unstable so he fiddled but gave up and went back to the organ. Good stuff :-)
My Pub band played this for years :-)

THANK YOU Ed! Camel never needed Sinclair in the band. I won't argue with his technical bass skills, but let's face it, he wrecked the Camel vocals.

Line-up for 1st album was
- Robert Fripp / guitar
- Greg Lake / bass guitar, lead vocals
- Ian McDonald / reeds, woodwind, vibes, keyboards, mellotron, vocals
- Michael Giles / drums, percussion, vocals
- Peter Sinfield / words and illumination
Mel came along for 2nd album and played from '70-'72 and I think some other appearances later.
