ooh great God... she can not stop talking now? waaaw i really hope my girl will talk like ur daughter too :). How long did it take from the first time using h aids to speak a consistent word or sentence? Thank u v m for ur support :) -ola
I can't tell you exactly when she started using phrases or sentences, but she was definitely over two. We signed a lot because I wanted her to be able to eavesdrop the way hearing children do. We tried signing to each other as much as we could and explained to her everything possible. I'm sure it helped. Hearing children are not "taught" language; they learn by absorbing it from their environment. So we gave Paula as much language as we could right away. Good luck with your daughter!
@julietma i did wear hearing aid when i was preschool to mid or before 4th grader since most kids at MSAD think i'm deaf but i tell u the truth i'm hard of hearing because i use ASL and listen to many kind of sound
It's very nice to see Paula. How high is her hearing range? Im a mom of a 2 year's girl, also hoh, bilateral beyond 110 dB. has her aids since 5 months old. She speaks a few words now ( recently, since 2 months ago), but sometimes veryinconsistent, and often she says all things like ababa or bu-a. Now she can hear thunder or sounds of the dogs, and houselizards she is very afraid of that and cried.Does it take that long to find out that our hoh children, to finally talk? -ola
Paula is in the moderate-to-severe range ... searching memory ... I want to say her highest threshold is around 80 dB bilat? She's almost five now and it's getting her to *stop* talking that's the trick. We had a lot of success early on using sign, then using that to bridge to English. We still sign, but she doesn't need it as much. Good luck with your daughter and keep up all your great work!
Hi, Casper=Big D. Thank *you* for venting your misdirected spleen here. My daughter does not have a CI. She is hard of hearing and uses hearing aids so that she can acquire multiple languages. She signs, speaks English, is learning Spanish. She has Deaf role models and friends. We have never considered her "broken," but have worked to give her access to the hearing and deaf worlds.
So, until you are the one giving everything for her, keep your opinions to yourself. Shame you.
Its amazing how such a simple video can make me so happy. Im 22 and hard of hearing, my left ear is so far gone that nothing would help. I have about 70% loss in my right ear, but you would never know it. I owe it all to my mother who worked so hard with me. I encourage you to do the same.
I'm a 13 year old with mild-moderate loss. I've had hearing aids since I was about 3.
I've definitely overcome some difficulties. I get straight A's and play sports. I don't know what I'd do without my aids. My sister also has hearing loss and so do my grandpas and my dad might.
I'm grateful my family has enough money to pay for them and get me new ones. I have the new Epoq ones right now... they are cool. I hope your daughter appreciates them when she is older! Good luck!:)
I appreciate your note. Paula is just realizing that her dad and I are hearing and she is not. She has been enthusiastic about her aids, but now sometimes she just says, "No, I can hear!" Like so many other things, I figure she'll work it all out in good time. It's good to hear you are doing so well :)
Hi! Thanks for the comment. My son doesn;t mind them anymore... but he has Severe to Profoundly hearing loss in both ears ...so they didn;t really work for him. He will have surgery tomorrow for a Cochler Onplantthough. I am glad they help your daughter!!! =)
Good luck with the implant. Yes, aids are great when they work and SO ANNOYING when they don't. Anyway, what's important is the communication, right? I'll keep your little boy in my thoughts for his surgery.
You mean, don't hear? Yes, I understand that giving up the quiet and putting on hearing aids can be annoying, maddening, a sacrifice made for the convenience of others or the demands of communication. They're not the magic wand I once thought they would be, but they have a place in the life of a child learning to speak and understand spoken language. And they look so cute in bright pink!
the girl is so cute. I wear hearing aids also for both ears and i am hard of hearing. It is tough and I wish that they had hard of hearing street signs also.
We had a virtually identical experience with my son who was not fitted until 3 years old. He instantly changed, became incredibly attentive and picked up language like a sponge. And the technology just keeps getting better. Congratulations.
It's amazing, isn't it? I watch this video and I can see how totally wordless my daughter was at that time. Now everything has a name, even abstract concepts and feelings; she can really express herself! I can't believe it's only been 13 months since she got those aids.
Amen! We love to hear her singing, hear her voice when she wakes up in the middle of the night and says, very clearly, "I ... want ... milk ... please!" Unfortunately the answer is no, but still, that voice is beautiful.
Yesterday my daughter got new earmolds. She was having a lot of feedback with the old ones. I know it bothered her. Yesterday when she had the new ones in we were walking down the street and a bird called overhead. "You hear that?" She asked me. I pointed to the bird at the top of a tree and she got a big smile on her face. It's amazing to share these little moments with her.
This video brings back a happy memory for me. When I got my first hearing aid, I was estatic to be able to hear an airplane flying above me and a bird at a zoo squaking as she tried to get a piece of straw into her cage. Without hearing aids, I would feel lost forever.

may i know what is the brand-name of her hearing aids?

Phonak. Hers are kind of low-end - Phonak makes much more sophisticated ones for more money - but they do the trick :)
