The thing i cant fathom is.. in Singapore a plate of authentic mee goreng sells for S$3.50, in places like Brisbane Australia and California, it will set you back about S$10.00-25.00. Daylight robbery i tell you!
In Vancouver, Canada a plate of Mee Goreng would range from $6 or $7 in a food court (not that there are many with mee goreng) to about $8 to $12 in a sit down restaurant. Enjoy the great value you have. You are very lucky. I remember when it was $1.25 a plate in Singapore. I am sure it is cheaper across the line in JB.
@SpicySteveSorko $1.25? You came here in the 60s? LOL.. the cheapest i could remember was when it was just $1.50 when i was just a little kid (maybe 8years old)..and i am 30years old now! haha.. ya it's definitely cheaper in JB but the best mamak mee goreng (or indian mee goreng) is in Beach Road, Singapore. Not too dry, slightly wet with spicy gravy and oozes with flavour! yum yum! now that i don't mind paying $6 for!
@SpicySteveSorko yerp..it is cheaper in JB, Malaysia..but for me..i prefer Penang Char Kuey Teow..i think you would love it..! or try Laksa Johor..it a great dish..i am from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia but i am originally from Johor.
@HanNajwa Hi there, my wife is from JB as well. I am more of a fan of the Southern style of Char Kway Teow as I like the sweetness of the ketjap Pekat and sugar and sometimes oyster sauce the Hawkers use versus the Penang style which is much lighter. However, any Malaysian Char Kway Teow is delicious and it is my favourite noodle dish after Thai Pad Thai noodles. Happy Makan.
Stuff like kecap manis are hard to find. Heck, I can't even find any where I live. Besides, most people in the western world (which includes Australia and California) are oblivious to the style of cooking in Asian countries -- even trained cooks since most of them are oriented with French techniques and stuff. Hence, they charge a lot for these things. But seriously, $25 is a fucking highway robbery. $10 should be fine IMO.
It is fresh noodle, potato and indeed raw tomato but it all cooks in a high heat wok and tastes delicious. It is on of tne of the most popular noodle dishes in Singapore and Malaysia; two countries that offer a wide array of delicious multicultural cuisine.

the food u cook will not be same tasted eveytime.
the soy sauce ,fish sauce evry thing should mix early.
there should be a spoon to measure everytime u add sauce.
never burn your wok too long cos will have burning smell.
after eating the food n if the plate is no oil left then it count healthy cook.
