Cheers for these. Have played guitar and other strings for ages but my singing has always been the wrong side of crap. Will be working on it with your advice. Thanks:)
No. I play single notes when doing the scales. All the natural notes with the guitar tuned normally and without a capo. You can do it with natural notes only, or with sharps and flats if you wish. The purpose behind scales is to help teach you the correct frequencies to sing and to also help in extending your vocal range.
I think is said how in one of the 3 vids. Record yourself singing along to a song, and listen back to it. Does it sound right to you? Also, get some other people to give you their opinion. Try to avoid family and close friends. Pick some people that you know will give you an honest opinion :)
@shainashaina123 You can check the pitch of your voice like you'd check the tuning of a guitar string. To tune a guitar string, a tuning note is played and you adjust the string tentsion until you hear the summation sound of the two notes coming together. Same thing with your voice. You can play a note with keyboard or guitar, sing a lyric syllable straight into the amp speaker, adjust your voice pitch to get the best summation sound.
I would like to thank you I had begun my journey of singing four years ago as a death metal screamer and due to a viral infection recently i will never be able to scream again. That does not upset me however for i have found the beauty in singing and the talent required to become great at singing. I have a long journey a head of me but your video was a great help and now im off to practice :) thanks again. Keep up the good work.

Thank you very much. I found the same thing with other videos. Everybody seemed to be trying to explain it in a technical and long winded way. I felt it needed to be explained simply so that as many people as possible could understand :)
@jeffstunes ur very welcome uve done a brilliant job i really appreciate it, n yes ur rite ur vid was easier to understand than most vids, last but not least LOL i LOVE ur british accent :) wish i had a brit accent too lol
the expresson like you said "when you look at a song look at each line and imagin it " umm when we do that can w wright down that feeling so we won't forget that feeling will that work
Of course. You do whatever works best for you. That's why my vids are quite ambiguous. So that people can develop their own methods loosely based on the tips.
since i found out based on my experience that singing is basically speaking out in tempo of the song and that uses your diaphram. It sounds great but the problem for me is trying to "talk" it out with the beat of the song and keeping it that way. I speak out the lyrics but when add the music along, i end up trying to reach the notes, ending up using my throat instead of my diaphram. You get what im saying? is there a mental trick to this? because its hard to keep it that way
Get yourself a few sticks and get ready to tap out the beat of the song. The percussion behind most songs doesn't change much as far as far as musical scales go. Now talk/rap along to the beat without the music, and keep doing that until it becomes natural to listen to the percussion of the music rather than the other instruments. This might help. It''s a technique I've known others to use. Again, have patience.
I believe that is so for anyone with vocal chords :)
Don't believe others when they say that there is a set way or standard you have to achieve. You just have to look at all the successful artists. They sing in a variety of ways. The key is to make the best of what you already have :)
it was really really helps u can really feel it work i cant sing at all and i got into a paguent at i half to sing but with thows tips im sure ill be able to sing better in no time
i was wondering... when i hear people sing, there voice sounds alot smoother + clearer yet mine just sounds different :/ do i need to breathe out when i sing ?
Breathing out is a good thing. Lol. Joking aside, we all sound different to each other and that is what makes the world of music interesting. If you want to produce a softer tone then you can mix some air with it when singing. It will affect power but this is not an issue unless you are performing on a stage without amplification.
I can appreciate that there are a few that have difficulty in following it, but I'm reasonably happy that that over 99 percent think it's concise and simple to follow in comparison to other instructional vids. Best of all, it's completely free!
thanks you very much for your vids, I use to make the chin mistake a lot :) but one question, if you put down your chin while singing a high note (high note -> in my case is supposed to be loud and impressive) , wouldn´t you lose power or amplification?
It was quite difficult to explain in simple terms, but the movement is quite subtle. It's more in than down. All the vocal power comes from the diaphragm so it shouldn't be affected. :)
Thanks so much for your tips! I just tried the holding my chin down for high notes and it worked!!! I always lifted my chin on high notes...it just made my voice...more powerful when I did that and more confident to try to hit the notes. Thanks a bunch!
Thank you Jeff, this would be the first semi-formal singing lesson I've ever attempted, and I have something to practice now. I have been trying to learn to sing, but my nose gets in the way. I never thought about trying to control where the sound comes from. I feel like I sound a little better already!
thankyou so much! i have no talent in singing but my guitar teacher told me thats its like everything else, i just have to practice, so this is just the thing i needed :D ohh and ive been singing from my diaghram like you said and it just feels like im tensing my stomach. is that how its meant to feel or am i doing it wrong???
Thank you for this. In elementary school I was in honors choir for my voice, but I stopped singing until about high school when my friends formed a band.
When I picked singing back up, I just frankly couldn't sing well anymore. Your videos are helping me return my voice to it's former glory =)
Okay, I am a person who doesn't know the first thing about singing. I enjoy it, and I've got a naturally pretty good voice, but it's not strong, I can't project, and I have never taken any lessons whatsoever. I have no clue where to start, so if anyone has any suggestions, I would be very grateful. These videos help me to know what to do, but I just don't know HOW to do any of it.
So just out of curiosity, at average, how long does it take for a person with no background in singing to be at least decent or ready to perform? Cause I want to sing for my church but don't know when I'll be ready. If you can answer my question, I'd really appreciate it.
Hi there. I'm repeating the answer I gave L0stGhost.
The answer to your question is a difficult one because each person is different. If you sang along to songs as a child then even that is a factor. As a rough guess for any normal person. If you were disciplined and practiced on a daily basis then I suppose you could achieve within 6 months to a year. It's all about developing muscles in the right way :)
Hello Tan. I don't get a lot of opportunity to answer all the comments I get now. The answer to your question is a difficult one because each person is different. You kind of blow up your stomach and use your muscles there. I'm not a singer myself, someone told me this, so I would check this with someone else :)

So, alright im 15, im trying to do like heavy metal (Screaming and singing) and i dont have a great voice when i try to project.. do you think my voice will change while aging? Or am i just fucked
when you sing do your shoulders move when breathing if so it shouldnt be you should be breathing from your stomach look up diaphragmatic breathing if uncertain hope this helps and also get a vocal coach you will not regret it
Hello. I really enjoy your videos! I have only watched two of them so far, and I don't want to seem rude or anything...but do you know that you look like an older Tobey Macguire. LOL I'm not sure if I spelled that right, but he's the man who played Peter Parker in the "Spider Man" movies. You look like you could be his father. My point is you look like an older version of him.
your video are very helpful, i never knew there was so much to it, i knew it was practice but thought it was very much more on natural talent, im going to exercise these tips and see where it goes for me!!! thanx a lot!
Hiya! i dont know if this is just me or what but, when i sing i get a double chin. This happens when i talk aswell. Im not exactly over weight or anything. Im the weight im ment to be. Is there something im doing wrong? Help!
d'yopu know how cruel it is when youve been singing excellent since you were a little 7year old child and then becuz u have done into deep puberty on 12 your voice is cracking becuz its trying to change and get deeper and u cant sing anymore till 15 when the voice is complete?Thats what im living NOW(and the bad thing is that i also started puberty very early:when i was 9 and a half)
Yes I know exactly how that feels. When I was young, all the choirs wanted me to be their lead voice. Then my voice broke and I was devastated. I didn't even try to sing for several years after that. Until it finally hit me that I could now sing songs with an adult sounding voice, and sing much lower than I could before. I had to practice a lot but believe me, your voice is about to become more versatile. Not as high maybe but hey, you can't have everything :)
well,at least, youve made me confirm that once again ill be able to sing-and well my voice was going very high before changing so im pretty sure i wont need high notes-plus im a man and my elder sister is a soprano so she will help me to the parts i cannot achieve ;D!!But i just have one question since u also have expirienced that:my voice is already very bass but still cracks at times which means it will become even deeper..will i have to start practicing from the beginning afterwards?
or will i still be able to sing as good like it is the next day after the last day i sung with my high voice?im pretty sure my case may not be just like yours but im asking what happened to YOU..thanks for the reply!!!
The tone of your voice changes when it breaks, as well as the range. I know it can be annoying when you get the crackles but perservere and keep practicing. It will help you start off your adult voice with a wide vocal range. If your Sister is Soprano then she'll know all about breathing exercises and scales. They are also in my vids. The only time you shouldn't practice is with a sore throat. Any other time is great. Although the neighbours might complain if you do it at 3am ;)
Also you mentioned about your voice getting deeper. Everybody's voice continually deepens throughout their life. Males and Females. Men's just go through a bit of a speedy process in their teens.
I like the way you're sharing your experience of singing and acknowledging you are not a qualified teacher. What you've done is quite a bit more valuable than a lot of the official lessons on here.
If you'd like to know more about singing naturally check out our profile page.
Sounds like he is trying to sing a scale of an Ah which is all very well but not good for going up through your range, it should be e or an e shaped a.
Cowboy teacher. Why! Why! Why! If you want to help vocal students to sing then stop coming up with all these bits and pieces of facts. Every thing you said is partially true - but when adding them up, it's just an irresponsible piece of advice.
these videos are very informative and helpful, thanks for the tips! :)
and to the kid below me, try making a loose kissy face and extend your lips out and blow outward. if it just seems like the air is passing through blow a little more firmly. there is a little bit of tension but not much.
apparently a slight back tilt of the head is good on the high range, cuz it gets your soft palate up and wide.. so the common intuition has something to it!
Also to the sludgefactory to help with the Brrr thing if you can't flap your lips that well hold your two index fingers at the sides of your mouth. It's easier that way.
The honest and simple answer to that is that you don't really know. A good voice is all about how others perceive you. I've never really thought my voice was anything special, yet I have hundreds of fans who love it. It took me a long time to accept that they might be right. It's an ego thing. Lol :)
I believe that if you can learn to speak, then you can learn to sing. All it takes is the right practice, and lots of dedication. If you play guitar already then you'll know all about practice and dedication :)
I love music, and I am in band, but I also wanted to improve and learn how to sing, and so far watching these videos, has made me motivated, to learn how to sing. So far I'm
There is vocal removal software about but none of them are any good. They destroy the music and don't work with most songs. You're better of getting hold of the Karaoke versions of the songs :)
You are quite young and your voice is still developing. Be patient, and keep on tryin those long notes. You will perfect them in the end. If it's because your throat is dry then try drinking a little water when you practice. Not at the same time though :)
thats alot this really helped. i play guitar and i have a really good ear and i can transcribe alot of songs on guitar but why is it that when i sing to myself it sounds good and on camera really badly.
Welcome to the world of recording. Most people don't like the sound of their own recorded voice. It's something you have to get used to. It took me a while. Happy new year :)
is it true what they say about lactose products, that they make your voice sound bad? because after i drink milk or eat chocolate i feel like i sing better.

If I do practice singing high notes,
would my voice in general be higher when I talk normally?
cuz I kinda like my deep voice haha

The simple answer to your question would be no.
These exercises help to extend your range. So you still retain your natural pitch. It just means that you can reach higher and/or lower notes :)

d'yopu know how cruel it is when youve been singing excellent since you were a little 7year old child and then becuz u have done into deep puberty on 12 your voice is cracking becuz its trying to change and get deeper and u cant sing anymore till 15 when the voice is complete?Thats what im living NOW(and the bad thing is that i also started puberty very early:when i was 9 and a half)

All the best.
Jeff

well,at least, youve made me confirm that once again ill be able to sing-and well my voice was going very high before changing so im pretty sure i wont need high notes-plus im a man and my elder sister is a soprano so she will help me to the parts i cannot achieve ;D!!But i just have one question since u also have expirienced that:my voice is already very bass but still cracks at times which means it will become even deeper..will i have to start practicing from the beginning afterwards?
fullofblood 2 years ago
or will i still be able to sing as good like it is the next day after the last day i sung with my high voice?im pretty sure my case may not be just like yours but im asking what happened to YOU..thanks for the reply!!!
fullofblood 2 years ago

If you'd like to know more about singing naturally check out our profile page.

i dont get it, when you say note, do you mean a letter? like singing the letter "e" like eeeeeeeeeeeeee?? octives and notes and shit just confuses me
kiwikarateguy 2 years ago
When he syas note, he oesn't mean a letter.
every sound has a note, (when singing, or playign an strument)
and then name them certain letters.
but then you have for examples A# Bflat and other things of that gendre
plsjesus 2 years ago

ShredLifeAway92 2 years ago 4
I can't figure out how to do that with my lips. It's realy ticking me off. Any tips?

apparently a slight back tilt of the head is good on the high range, cuz it gets your soft palate up and wide.. so the common intuition has something to it!

i play guitar but i want to learn to sing!! how long do u pratice singing in one day??
MattkNT 2 years ago
dont worry about how long you practice
you shouldnt even be thinking of ti as practice
i sing for the fun of it all day long
whenever i get the chance, ill be watchign a movie, ill pause the movie start singing then watch the movie after 20 minutes or somthing
good job on the guitar thing
and good luck with your singing
remember, dont practice, lol, just sing as much as you want, and you will get better soon i promice you, things like this dont happen over night
flamezjamez 2 years ago
True. This works for basically anything you could practice. The practice itself should be something that one loves.

Also to the sludgefactory to help with the Brrr thing if you can't flap your lips that well hold your two index fingers at the sides of your mouth. It's easier that way.

How do you know if you are a good singer? (Not you but me) Please reply!
obsessedwithmiley14 3 years ago
The honest and simple answer to that is that you don't really know. A good voice is all about how others perceive you. I've never really thought my voice was anything special, yet I have hundreds of fans who love it. It took me a long time to accept that they might be right. It's an ego thing. Lol :)

i can play a guitar have for 20 years and ive learnd to play by ear best why can anyone sing becase i would love to learn
hto1971 3 years ago
I believe that if you can learn to speak, then you can learn to sing. All it takes is the right practice, and lots of dedication. If you play guitar already then you'll know all about practice and dedication :)
jeffstunes 3 years ago
Wow my brother has a friend who played guitar for 5 years and can play by ear he's considered a fast learner

do u know any such software in which the singer silent but the music is on
michale123456789 3 years ago
There is vocal removal software about but none of them are any good. They destroy the music and don't work with most songs. You're better of getting hold of the Karaoke versions of the songs :)

Im 12 and I have been singing for 6 years.
BUT..
I Keep coughing while im Trying to hold on to a long Note.
How do I Stop It?
TerrisMIX 3 years ago
You are quite young and your voice is still developing. Be patient, and keep on tryin those long notes. You will perfect them in the end. If it's because your throat is dry then try drinking a little water when you practice. Not at the same time though :)
Happy new year.
jeffstunes 3 years ago
thats alot this really helped. i play guitar and i have a really good ear and i can transcribe alot of songs on guitar but why is it that when i sing to myself it sounds good and on camera really badly.
RocknRollTribute 3 years ago
Welcome to the world of recording. Most people don't like the sound of their own recorded voice. It's something you have to get used to. It took me a while. Happy new year :)
jeffstunes 3 years ago
Your videos are great.
I have a question, though.
Is it possible for everyone to learn how to sing?
Say you have the most horrendous voice, is there any hope?
Playitloudx 3 years ago
Contrary to popular belief, no one is "born" with a beautiful voice
With sufficient work and training, yes you can improve your voice
Mazumune 3 years ago 3
I believe so. Mazumune's reply just about sums it up. Happy new year :)
jeffstunes 3 years ago
i have a question...
is it true what they say about lactose products, that they make your voice sound bad? because after i drink milk or eat chocolate i feel like i sing better.
