Remember the "Gilded Age"? This country was miserably poor under pure, unregulated, free market capitalism. That's what capitalism is. you will always have more havenots then haves. the purpose of government in my opinion is to protect the individual, not the collective. the gilded age is not representative of libertarian ideals, as certain corporations were allowed to grow beyond reason. their power allowed unmitigated breaches of contract, and in this regard the government, not the economy, failed. the laws that were needed then were already on the books, they just were not enforced due to corruption, which is inevitable under any system.
