I would like to visit Laos or Thailand but I'm afraid of the communist in Laos and 2nd as far as Thailand I'm afraid they will play tricks on me because I know alot of Thais look down on Lao.I envy(in a good way) Thais that can go overseas and get an education in America or wherever they go and still be able to come back to their native Thailand and have opportunities.I don't think it's like that for Lao ppl in America. No opportunities in Lao. :0(
@thesenuts586 I think many people share the same feelings you do and I once had the same feelings. I realize the situation is communist but to be honest I don't feel much of the govt presence in my daily life. I felt like I had to keep constantly watch my back in the US but with the people here everyone seems very laid back and in general people just want to drink and hang out. You are very correct about the opportunities for us in Laos and that is also why I'm here :) Stay optimistic brother.
There is alot of brain drain in Laos, well educated ppl immigrate to other places for a better opportunity, and when I say well educated I don't mean you have to have a college degree.
Siharat this hits close to home for me, I don't know where you are now but currently present day I thought about moving back to Asia for personal reasons and I think about how my parents immigrated from Laos to have a better life and now I'm thinking about moving to Asia to have a "better" life probably not Laos though.Isn't that a painful irony. And I no longer live with my parents, they don't even know where I live.
@Aviatortothesea I completely understand how you feel in search of a "better" life. My parents did not understand why I would want to move back to Laos. Especially how they took me away to get a good education and job. But, they are starting to realize my goals not centered around money can also be happiness. Another great aspect that I am so in love with the country is the sense of community and family. I encourage to you visit if you get the chance.
@siharat yes unfortunately I'm not sure if I have any relatives left in Laos, my uncle on my mother's side passed away a few years back, we have immigrated all over the world from France to Australia to America....I guess it won't matter if there are relatives there or not, but it would make it easier. It's would be difficult to get out of my parents if there's any relatives there.
I'm so glad that laos is going to have a wonderful intellegent person like you back there with laos people. Yes, please do help our people. If we don't help each other no one will. Now a day life changes so much and people changes too. All over the worlds is changing not just laos peoples itself. I would love to see everyone from all over the worlds to love each other no matter what colors or people they are. God bless you I will follower you everywhere you go as long as you are safe and happy.
Thanks for the question. I went to Laos for 6 weeks in 2006. Laos is a beautiful green country but like anywhere in the world there are imperfections. It was an eye opening experience for me. Life is no more about money and career for me. I want to spend time with our people and give back everything I have learned for the benefit of our people. I would agree there is not much there compared to where I grew up and that is the exact reason why I am motivated to move back to Laos.
um wait, did you say green country? crap I must have been in the wrong side of the country, all I see around was red dirt and water buffalo..hmm
congrats on your decision to move back, I am planning on taking an early retirement myself. I too in the IT/finance field. I would like to get involved with the new Laos bourse, so perhaps you could keep your eyes open and let me know some leads eh.
"Red dirt and water buffalo" I could understand what you mean. I saw that mainly in the little towns out in the country along side the main roads (paved or unpaved). And in the city, dust, lots of dust. I think it is much better further inside and away from the traffic.
I'm trying to get my parent to retire there. They haven't been back since 1980. So I guess getting them to visit should be my first task at hand.
Sabaidee con bout (Hi every body), I really enjoy the videos that you made, and listening to you speak my lao. I was born in Thai, but most of my family is from Vientiane. I hope I spelled it right.
sabaidee! i'm trying to learn how to speak lao better. i understand it fluently but i am not around the lao language when i am in college. i have enjoyed watching both your videos and i hope you continue making more! i want to visit laos sometime, so i'm curious as to what you will encounter when you are there. good luck and take care!
