Nice how he had to drag the dog into frame and it then ran off as soon as it could. The dog looked nervous and not happy to be this close to the bike and/or its owner. NOT how you'd like an 'expert' to show you how it's done.
I taught my 8 year old newfy mix to do this today. He's completely bombproof and good, but overweight. I started slowly and in about 2-7 minutes we were running. Because hes not in shape, i gave him trot breaks every 1-3 minutes. Then I took him back home, waited 20 min and went out again. It takes a while because they stop and sniff sometimes, so be aware. Also Never tie the leash to you bike, always hold it encase you have to let go quickly. ITS REALLY FUN! and my dog loves it!
Do NOT do this!!! It is very dangerous for you and for your dog. One or both of you will likely get hurt sooner or later. If you are in denial and feel you must do this, do not hold the leash in your hand or attach it to your handlebars as this video suggests; if the dog suddenly veers (squirrel? cat?) or if you need to suddenly turn (road hazard?), you will crash. Attach the leash to the back of the bike with a spring. Better yet... walk or jog with your dog.
The first time I ever rode my bike with my dogs, I just hopped on and went. They catch on no problem and enter the zone in seconds. They loved it and still do. But if you prefer taking your time and going through all of that, some folks may need the extra time. The important thing is to get your dog out there and exercise him!!
@NutritionKnows its the best way to train a dog to stay close, i dont think they realize its the bike that makes you go faster than them so they are always making sure you dont take off on them. once a dog is bonded to you take him to a strange trail and make him chase you lol
@jonathanlim21 you seem like the stupid one that cant type proper English... cant you read the title? what you thought this video was supposed to be humorous? gtfo of YouTube...
The bike is my BEST friend for my dogs! I foster a lot of dogs and this helps with the high energy types. I have a video of me biking with 3 of my fosters at one time. I agree with the comment about making sure not to give too much slack with the leash. Learned it the hard way with a border collie I fostered!
He missed one important thing when you use a leash. It is important to makes sure that the leash short enough so the dog won't run ahead of you. Your dog won't be able to see the front tire and he will not know when you turn or try to stop.
I know this from personal experience from walking my dog for the first time!! Luckily he didn't need any practice i was shocked that he was doing so well. (But i did walk without a bike for 30 minutes.)
@bluegama500 Well he did say he did that in the beggining so his dog wouldn't be affraid from the bike anymore and obviously see it as a normal object in a new surrounding. And why bring fear into your dog? Make it feel safe and calm, then gradually get excited from your bodylanguage and actions. Bikeriding is a great exercise and fun for both you and your dog.
Answering your question. A leash would only be required if your dog is timid to the bike.
Bleh forgot, if the state of mind continue other things can be done instead. I rollerbladed a lot when I took care of my friends husky. He hates bikes, :P Any "not too loud" transportation that increases your speed is good to use to exercise with your dog. + It makes it easier and more fun for you too.
This is very good exercise for your dog. Better than any running or jogging can do. If your dog is fast and fit enough i suggest going full speed iwth your dog, that gets them really fit :D.
I go bike riding with my dog everyday. She literally stays at a fast running pace for hours on end. I would highly recommend this to anyone with a dog. Your dog will become solid muscle in no time.
please be careful - start with short rides or skating times, a dogs paw pads need to get used to running on pavement. I went roller blading with my dog and one of her pads was skinned after, I felt horrible.
This is joke! There are better ways to walk your dog on your bike than what you so basically described. You definitely want both hands on the handle bars and a short leash attached to the seat post. This way the dog cannot knock you over when he sees a squirrel or other dogs. Two products are made specifically for the purpose: The Walkydog Leash and The Springer Leash.
Tell your best friend that it's time to go on a "bike ride" and he/she will get excited as all hell. Don't worry about a leash, or walking a block. Just expect them to haul ass after you, and if they don't, then you treat your dog poorly. All dog's love to explore, especially with their caretaker. More often than not, you're exploring with them, and not nice versa.
My dog LADY loves to run while I ride... only I have her on a long leash with a bungie cord for shock. She goes when I say "go" and she turns right or left when I say "right" or "left" she also slows to a caution when we approach intersections when I say "easy" Its a blast!
Thanks for mentioning the clear lack of expertise. I made a similar comment about his how-to backpack video, but that never got posted (any wonder why?). Listen to the tone this handler uses to address his dogs and it becomes clear, anyone can call themselves an expert but can they walk the talk? [;-)

LMFAO the dog is terrified of the bike .....or him

Oh and you don't need a leash. Your dog won't wander away from your bike because of the fear of you leaving it behind.

For all we know, the dog was simply a prop. You may be a dog trainer, but you are no legal expert, and what you have written is very close to libel.

Not even close, but for all we know you're a bit of a jackass responding to year old youtube threads.

Yeah you can see the dog wasn't really sure about getting close to him.
If I call my dog it won't run to me, stand away from me and shy away when I try to get it closer to me.
