I love coriander (cilantro). We use it quite a bit. Basil is great as well, and I use fresh chives for many things. We often use the thyme for our chicken dishes. I guess I like them all!
I just recently found you by looking for a fish taco recipe and I'm so glad I did! Now I'm a subscriber! I have thought of growing an herb garden for years now but have never gotten around to it. This definitely gives me some inspiration. Thanks!
I am thinking of one of those indoor herb garden, Williams - Sonoma sells. Since the summers a cool where I live and well winter is 8 months long. I like the videos very much, eating out here is expensive and really poorly prepared. I would pain you to see how they serve pasta here.
Cool! I haven't seen the Williams-Sonoma one. I'm glad you like the videos. Cooking with fresh herbs makes your food taste better and is so easy to do. Let me know how your new indoor garden works out when you get it. Take care! Jason
Love the fresh herbs... But only some can survive in the hot AZ desert. However, it is common to see rosemary as huge shrubs all over Phoenix. When planting cilantro, can you let it go to seed to harvest the coriander without sacrificing the plant?
I see rosemary used in that fashion here in the California deserts.
I have always planted cilantro from a container. It takes off pretty quick, and I use it pretty quick and then it's gone. I have read that you can let it go to seed and it will come back. It likes cool temps with sun. Maybe you can try growing it in AZ in the fall?
I got Dill, Red Basil, Large Leaf Basil and Parsley in mine. Is it true I have to get rid of the flowers from the Basil or they'll die? I actually want to expand the garden, but herb plants are hard to get here. The garden's really handy.
Hello! I'm glad you also enjoy your herb garden. Here are basil tips. According to the National Gardening Association, "Pinch the tip from the center shoot of basil after it has grown for 6 weeks to force side growth and prevent early flowering. If flower stalks develop, simply snip them off. Basil is programmed to initiate flowering when it has six pairs of leaves on a stalk. For maximum production per plant, cut it back to two leaves per stem, and dont let it grow past four pairs."
Unfortunately it never survives our cold winters in the California mountains. We have to replant it every year. I wish it would survive, as I love the scent and the taste!
Yes! Use an indoor herb garden. My brother bought me the AeroGarden 6 Elite. I'm going to try it out this winter and I'll post a video on our progress.
You can buy seeds at any home improvement or gardening center. I prefer to buy the herbs that have already been started in pots since our summers are shorter than most in California. Herbs are almost like weeds; they grow quickly!
Oh, lemon grass is great! I might have to add that to our garden. We have a great recipe for marinated olives that uses lemon grass as the main ingredient. Thanks for the idea! Jason
Growing a personal armory of herbs is a really great idea. I guess it's true that growing herbs saves money and is fresher, but I mainly like it because I'm lazy. It's nice knowing that you have herbs on hand; it helps with improvisation.
Only problem is that, here in Canada, it can get too cold in the winter...
By the way, you have a beautiful back garden, Jason. Very, very lush and green. I often accidentally kill living things in my care. Hahaha!
Hi Dustin, Here in the California mountains, we also get quite a bit of snow. Luckily most of our herbs, except for basil, rosemary and cilantro, come back every year! We are going to test out a new indoor herb garden that my brother gave me for my birthday this year. I'll let you know how it works.
Cool. Thanks. I must say though, your relatives are good at giving gifts. A herb garden kit sounds so much better than pairs of festive birthday socks... :P
Isn't it great just to go out to the yard and grab what you need? I wouldn't trade it for anything. Especially when our local market sells fresh herbs with the roots on for $4-5 each!
Great question! Then the indoor herb garden comes into play. My brother just got me one, so I'll post a video on how it works later this year. Cheers, Jason

How is the climate where you live? I live in Norway and we have a long winter. Do these bloom again when summer arrives? Or?
WildChildftw 7 months ago
@WildChildftw Hi there. Yes, these bloom again when summer arrives. Even areas that have heavy winter snow can grow an herb garden. Have fun with it!

I don't see why not! Just plant them in the cooler evening hours and give them a good soak. Most should come back every year.
