Im almost completly sure that mario dieing when he hit that block was just bad luck and having mario hit the exact point where the corner makes it's point, and went through it, then the game's mario position script thing (lack of proper name) Said mario.Position ~= block.Position if false mario;Die() or something similar to that. like that one glitch with the slanted celling and the block in brutal mario

Maybe that custom sprite was had some misread coding that was close an insta-kill sprite so it the game read it as that.

My guess is that there is a black hole in the block and when Mario jumped in the block he realsed it and and got sucked up into the alternate demsion of Elementia.

The corner of that block was actually a wormhole leading to an alternate timeline, where it turns out Mario had already been dead for ten years. It turns out that the Sega Dreamcast 3 is the newest and best game system in that timeline, and Mario couldn't cope with Sonic being the most popular game character, so he took his own life. Either that, or a dodo pecked him to death (dodos exist in that timeline). Or maybe some silly soldiers named after condiments killed him. No one knows for sure...

Actually, the bouncing things are the donut type enemies from Super Mario Land with the graphics of Fred (those bouncing ball things in Wario's Castle in Super Mario Land 2). I am curious to whether this was an intentional shout out to an earlier game though. It's damn neat if it is.
