  • all pink floyd fans know that waters is the bass player. gilmours propaganda that he was the musical force behind floyd is sucks .rick wright was very musical and fantastic . gilmour was allways good for p.r. and.he is a good guitarist, but roger is an artist, musician, composer, writer.

  • haha foolish thoughtsby, david gilmour fans.i m bass player since 1990.if you have old pink floyd bootlegg stuff is easy to understand that Roger WATERS is a very clever bass PLAYER . of course he s not ,jaco pastorius,. but he wrote some very good bass lines.i like gilmour as a guitarist but he couldnt be a good songwrighter .roger is a fantastic songwrighters

  • SPINAL TAP!! :D

    lol this is awesome!

  • lmao spinal tap, of course.

  • Every good Floyd fan knows David was a better bassist than Roger, He played the bass solo in Pigs (Three Different Ones) and roger was never great at it...but he was a GREAT songwriter, until he got crazy...during and after the wall I mean

  • ähh hähä this sucks! change it!... btw Waters was also quite often using picks, e.g. at "live at pompei" he almost exclusively used them, so whats this discussion for?

And certainly Gilmour is a much better musician than Waters.

  • @McTatzi No doubt about that, but Roger sure could write good songs! I dunno wut happened but those days are long gone

  • wheres Nigel? And its wierd to see David St Hubbins our from behind a guitar.

  • They are ALL playing basses; it's part of the joke, the humor of Spinal Tap. The song they are playing is "Big Bottom" and they want to emphasize the bottom by adding more and more bass. Part of the joke is that similar bass tones will tend to cancel one another out, so this would never fly in a real band, it would be muddy or mush. Lots of people wouldn't get the joke, and you are way ahead of all those who don't even recognize a bass as different from a guitar, so don't feel too bad!

  • why is there two basses?

  • eh. y two basses. really?!

  • No surprises here, all the Pink Floyd songs with fretless bass solos are done by Gilmour (Pigs, Hey You, etc.) Roger was quite good at bass but never saw himself as a bassist.

And yes, most bassists use picks and fingerstyle, I prefer using fingerstyle, but since Gilmour is a guitarist, he'd be more experienced with a pick.

You have to hand it to the man, he's performed with Pink Floyd, The Who, The Beatles and now Spinal Tap.

  • Some Bass players use picks. I use a pick when I play bass. Interestingly enough I am mostly fingerpick woth guitar.

  • che bella voce Enzo Paolo Turchi...

  • is this spinal tap?

  • @HappyInsaneBicho Duh...wake up, idiot!

  • @HappyInsaneBicho This is Spinal Tap.

  • Spinal Tap FTW?

  • Waters was never terribly interested in the playing of music, rather the making of it, if that makes sense. He has admitted on several occasions that Gilmour was the only one of the group with any real musical talent (which I suppose is true, depending on how you look at it). In his solo concerts, he rarely plays bass (except for the big Floyd numbers). He usually plays acoustic guitar or just sings. He doesn't really worry about guitars and basses and he hasn't since the early 70s.

  • @seemeel Well, the late 70's, but yes, true enough. Roger was always more concerned with the lyrics as soon as he came to power in Pink Floyd. Though I think he would admit that Richard Wright was also obscenely musicaly talented, aswell as David.

  • @MrConeman Yep, Wright was brilliant too, but the first time Waters said this, it was just after David joined (and his mother lent the band a rather large amount of cash for new gear). Waters has repeated it since. Gilmour was great from the start, while you can hear how Wright improved as a player from 1967 to about 1973.

  • @MrConeman Yes, Rick used to tune Rogers Bass

  • Wanted to add: Roger Waters has stated playing the bass is less important to him. At lot of Pink Floyd music was played live before it was pieced together in a studio, and the finished product that we hear is from tons of studio work and people like Alan Parsons, Brian Humphries, James Guthrie and Bob Ezrin.

They all didn't sit around and bicker about who was the better player at what instrument, I think they all knew their strong and weak points. Composing music is a lot more than just playing.

  • I agree David was better playing the guitar and some bass riffs. Gilmour said himself he played some bass riffs on the studio albums because he could play them quicker than Roger. Doesn't mean he invented all the riffs. It was Roger's riff in One of these Days, They both played it together on the album. "I love them both,"

lets not forget though, that Waters also played some electric and acoustic guitar rhythm on many albums and some awesome tape effects, VCS 3 and Synthi A synthesiser stuff.

  • I see at least 3 bass players on this stage including Gilmour and I do not see what it is so great about this bass line.......it is simple line

  • @kazam2091 He does play better, even if waters is or not a better song writer, gilmour plays better bass, he even played the bass on some of the pink floyd songs in the studio, making fun that water couldn't play fretless bass.

  • @kazam2091 on a island = lonely and bored..'????

is a very good album bro....obviosly...you can't compare with the lirycs write by Waters....thats my opinion.....best wishes from Mexico bro..

  • @kazam2091 when it comes to being a musician, david is 10000x better than roger. Roger even recognized that in a an interview. thats why PF was so good when they all four came together, roger would write the lyrics, david, rick, and nick would write the music. this is why everything from the wall-the division bells sucks ass because it was never the 4 of them going in equally.

  • wow I'm a pro bass player and I've been playing for like 9 years but David kicks my ass at freless bass maybe it is because I've touched a fretless like once

  • @yougoddamnprick Why wouldn't he play it? From Wikipedia "art VI (Wright, Waters, Gilmour; from 0:004:55) begins with a howling wind from the preceding song "Wish You Were Here". As the wind fades away, David Gilmour comes in on the bass guitar. Roger Waters adds another bass guitar with a continuing riff pattern. Then Richard Wright comes in playing an ARP String Ensemble Synthesizer and after a few measures..."

  • @yougoddamnprick read "Comfortably Numb: The Inside Story of Pink Floyd" by Mark Blake (which I think has now been re-released "Pigs Might Fly: The Inside Story of Pink Floyd"). Roger Waters did little studio bass work. He also played the bass on the studio version One of These Days and Echoes. Floyd used a lot of dubbing techniques pioneered by the late Les Paul. Effects such as multi-tracking and vocal over-dubbing (used to great effect by the late Karen Carpenter amongst other artists).

  • @yougoddamnprick David Gilmour played the bass leading in from Wish You Were Here (the song) on part VI of Shine On. So obviously I DO know Pink Floyd!

  • @yougoddamnprick What ideas? All he ever wrote and sang about was his father being killed in the war. And entire album, The Final Cut, was dedicated to the subject! With the exception of The Fletcher Memorial Home, it was Floyd's worst album. In fact, according to Dave Gilmour himself, The Final Cut was more like a Roger Water solo album because he and Nick Mason had little or no input in it whatsoever (Waters had already sacked Rick Wright by this time).

  • LOL! The singer, Michael McKean, is Lenny from the 70's TV sitcom Laverne and Shirley! I forgot about that.

  • im pretty sure he's not better than roger waters

  • @MrBasementJams Closer to the truth is that David played bass on much of Pink Floyd's studio releases -- including fretless bass on "Hey You". Because Roger's bass-playing ability was minimal at best he could not manage more complex bass lines. David is by far the more accomplished musician and plays a broad range of instruments, including more recently, the saxophone ... and David has the better, cleaner, clearer singing voice -- then and now.

  • @KarmicOmen i feel destroyed. haha but no dip about the vocals. david is way better!

  • @MrBasementJams LOL! I'm sorry if I shattered your illusion, but shocking as it is, it's the sad truth ... Waters knowingly accepted bass-playing credit where is was undeserved.

  • @KarmicOmen He also played drums on Syd Barrett's album "The Madcap Laughs" he played keyboards and drums on his album "On an Island". David also played the Cumbus, a Turkish banjo-like instrument.

  • @DannyNewman Hmm, I know ... David is very accomplished musically on a wide range of instruments -- and vocally he's just amazing.

  • Surprisingly Roger Waters did very little studio work, preferring the live performances.

  • Why is Gimour playing with Spinal Tap? Totally different rock genres...

  • What the fuck?!! This is spinal tap. lol. They should have had Gilmour be the drummer

  • David Gilmour on bass -LOL

  • David Gilmour played Bass parts on a few Pink Floyd Records, including Pigs (three different ones) on the Animals Album. Great bass solo in the beginning

  • @Noseheros He also played the bass lines on One of These Days and Shine On You Crazy Diamond.

  • @DannyNewman thanks I didnt know

  • The real bassist has the neck cast. Stonehenge and Big Bottom lol!

  • the song with 2 bassists

  • 3 bassists!!

  • spinal tap , what a shit band ! But it is funny :)

  • In my mind there has never been any doubt that Gilmour is a much better bass player than Waters. There's no argument there. Gilmour played the fretless bass on Sheep and Pigs which incidentally contains the best bass work on any Floyd song. As for the picks-fingers debate, Gilmour most definitely plays Pigs with his fingers on a fretless bass

  • @rahooligan Didn't know that. Gilmour really played Pigs on the bass? He's good...

  • @FriedChickenofDeath6 David played bass on SHEEP too

  • @KarmicOmen WOW! That's awesome!

  • @rahooligan He also played bass on One ofThese Days and Shine On You Crazy Diamond.

  • @DannyNewman not on "shine on you crazy diamond", Roger did it.

  • @rippersk8er Actually he did. David played the bass leading in from the song Wish You Were Here.

  • David gilmour's the worlds best ever bassist !!!

  • yep! the fucking spinal tap! jajajaj

  • The guitarist is with broken neck, or this is part of the 80's fashion? :)

  • It's cuz he's a guitarist. Picks are what he's used to.

  • @LeftyCenter exactly, I mean even Roger used picks

  • @LeftyCenter No, just Gilmour is better musican than Waters. That's all.

  • You should look for Anthony Jackson, he uses pick in jazz playing

  • many use picks... chris squire is one of the best bass players to use a pick... john entwislte used pick and fingers...

  • @SHOJMPR42 Picking on a bass isn't uncommon. Roger Waters even uses a pick It'd just one of a number of techniques: picking, fingering, thumbing, slapping...

  • I love this one and you know what he plays Ernie Ball Music Man bass you can't beat it

  • hahahaha...dave gilmour with spinal tap!

  • one guys got a neck brace 0:55

  • fuck yes spinal tap hahaha

  • gilmour you play anything with anybody

  • who is better? stupid question. It's different not better. Who is better Lennon or Macca? same answer. I prefer all of them.

  • wow its so surprizing to see david gilmour on bass but he is progressive rock. he shouldnt be with some hard rock metal heads.

  • claro que no toca mejor que waters, david es el mejor en la guitarra no hay duda, pero en el bajo es mejor waters, y creo que los dos tienen buenas ideas

  • Nobody play bass like mr. waters

  • Yeah.. everybody is better (on bass btw :p)

  • David played many of the 'cool' bass lines in Floyd's music. Noteable are the bass lines from "Hey You" and he and Roger double tracked eachother on "One of these days"

  • NOT! Nice try to get people to view this crap.

  • that acctually is David Gilmour

  • That's not Dave Gilmour, obviously!!!

  • yes it is?

  • As a gutarist of note I can say that it's not difficult to switch between Lead/Rythm/Bass and does make Gilmour God like in mymind!

  • Hahaha Spinal Tap

  • david is a god sent from heaven refreshing our lives and souls long live david gilmour

  • Funny,when/where was this?

  • is there anything this man cant do

  • if i am correct, Dave played bass nad drums on Syd's first solo album. ;)

  • He started the prentiousness, not me. I was only being like that cos he was 'talking' down to me. I'm here for the music, baby!

  • Me to.Just reading your arguments reminded of me when i was married..sorry bad joke.Just walk away from it.Nobody will think less of you.

  • Good advice, you're obviously a David gilmour fan!

  • Irena and bondi-think were over it.

  • They're pricks obviously.

  • is that gilmour's bass which he gave to guy pratt as a gift?

  • No, hes playing a stingray. He gave Guy his stacked knob Jazz

  • pink floyd members are not talented.

    pink floyd members are genious.

  • whys dave playing with Spinal Tap

  • Comment removed

  • No shit Gilmour plays better than Waters. Waters does not have much musical talent, I say he is a great poet, philosopher, political speaker. That man knows shit and is very intelligent, but his musical side tends to lack "music" if you know what I mean

  • Yup. Roger admitted that David and Rick were the real musicians in Pink Floyd.

  • Awesome video!

  • Eerily ironic & appropriate, given that Dave's girlfriend/wife/partner assumed (some of) Pink Floyd's song writing duties with no Roger in the band.... LOL. Very Spinal Tap.

  • That was what Roger Water's said about Gilmour's songwriting so, marcusbondage, stop trying to be smart and find some originality!

  • No irenalfailure - Polly Samson, Dave's wife is on the lyric credits of post-Waters PF albums; and what did RW say that I said? And,silly, there's no apostrophe in "Roger Water's". Duh!

  • OK, pedantic bastard. It's David, not Dave. If you knew anything about Gilmour, you'd know that he hates to be called Dave. The thing is, Bondage, you know you're a sucker for plagiarism, but you're too ashamed to admit that you're a fucking retarded forger who can't think of anything original to say and relies on other people's concepts to sound highbrowed. Duh isn't a word, you fake intellect.

  • Ha-ha irenal; you can't even spell and now you are spell-checking your sorry sad life in a pathetic effort to appear educated. I have met Dave and he is awesome; so cool & chilled; unlike your neurotic fat fanny. Oh & btw, here's a clue... grammar rules dictate that no person can be a 'fake intellect' (duh x 2!) but they can be a 'pseudo intellectual'... sounds better, hey dumbo? Bwahahahahahaha!

  • And in your futile attempt to 'appear' educated, you say 'neurotic fat fanny' in a sorry effort at insulting me! That's a contradiction in itself given that neurosis is of the brain, you complete fuck-up. And obviously, 'Dave' is so 'cool' and 'chilled' alike yourself, which 'Bwahahahahahaha' amusingly indicates . Oh, and clearly you were hard-pressed finding superlatives for 'Dave' as 'cool' and 'chilled' mean pretty much the same thing! Well done, Bondage!

  • Ha-ha-... Your brain is IN your fanny - that's the point. And how quickly did you answer?!?!? ... Tragic... get a life away from the computer. You are like a pathetic bag lady hermit who eats cat food. Fact is, YOU CAN"T SPELL. Hee-hee. You lose, loser. Fat, too.

  • My reply was a week ago you weeping anus! Which means that you're retort was long over-due. This suggests that you're minutiae brain needs prolonged thinking time to come up with anything worthwhile to say, which in your case doesn't happen anyway, so give up the ghost you complete dimwit. I would have added to the previous sentence 'before you embarrass yourself', but that's a bit late, seeing that you've already done that. And in what grammar is the word 'Can"t'? Too bad, you erroneous fud!

  • Are you still having your period? You are still babbling: "This suggests that YOU'RE minutiae brain needs..etc" - makes no sense. FYI "you're" means "you are" . Lesson over. Take the tampon out of your mouth. You make no sense. 'Can't' means CAN NOT - it is also what you are; a fat smelly "can't"! Ha!

  • 'FYI'! What a ponce! Only pretencious bastards use acronyms such as that. Do you also do lectures in bondage? By the way, your grammatical lectures are far from inspiring, which is perhaps contrary to what you believe. That 'Ha!' at the end of your nonsensical jibberish was pretty deperate for you are the only person who'd laugh at such a weak attempt at wit. I'll give you a hint on how to climb out of the rut of despair you seem to have found yourself in; stop trying so hard to impress.

  • Oh, hello, fat psychotic hermit scrag (who can't spell). By your manic response it seems your Creutzfeldt-Jakob (mad cow disease) medication has obviously run out, again. Ha!

  • Yeah, Bondage, I know what the Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease is, you pompous bastard. You're retorts are becoming increasingly lame, I chance to say it is your feeble mind that needs the medication, not mine. And there's the obligatory 'Ha!' again, you self-congratratulatory prick. If 'scrag' is the best insult you can come up with, I'd quit whilst you're behind because that smacks of desperation. I think you've scraped the bottom of your shallow barrel of infantile abuse.

  • Do you mean "your" or "you're"?!?!? (Spelling & grammar can be confusing for the easily confused, you have my sympathy...) Your gums are flappin' on your keyboard, but no sense is coming out! Ha!

  • Well, I had to give you something to react to, giving that your arguments are so weak and repetative. And, yet again, the self-praise. Get the message you absolute malcontent. ?!?!? isn't exactly the work of a literary intellect, so practise what you preach you hideous primate.

  • Don't you mean 'GIVEN that your ..etc" - You STILL CAN"T SPELL! And when you write about 'literary intellect' you may want to use a capital letter to begin the sentence! Otherwise, you appear very stupid. Hahahahaha - and you are!

  • No - hahahahahaha - YOU ARE! And that wasn't even the beginning of my sentence, butt rapist! I wait a week for a mere three sentence retort and, as ever, it is weak and lame. Is your first point really about spelling, Bondage? Are you as dense as I suspect? Well, obviously you are but I expect your reply will reach me after your customarily slow brain registers my riposte. Have to wait a while for that. Later, Herpes!

  • How do you keep a moron in suspense? Call it irenalfailure and feed it your nourishing shit once a week. You can even train it to respond like an idiotic salivating dog; (that can't spell) woof!

  • Yet another pile of verbal excrement from Bondage. Barely 3 sentences long, your mundane and inarticulate replies are becoming so increasingly feeble, I actually feel pity for you. Woof!

  • I have trained you well. Woof! Imitation is the highest form of flattery and your use of "Woof" attests to that. And other users have rated your comments in the minus and mine in the plus! You lose again, loser! It's official! You are stupid! If it says so on YouTube it must be true!

  • If you use the word 'pretentious' but can't spell it... you are pretentious

  • That's a pretty Music Man he's got there..

  • Surely you realise that this is Spinal Tap?

  • Comment removed

  • he's so cute <3

  • Dude, how clueless can you be? The band is Spinal Tap, and the guy with the neck brace is Harry Shearer. It's called comedy -- look into it.

  • Well thanks for letting me know that it's intentional. I was starting to get worried that the need to rock out overcame his neck constraint. But 80s rock is still pretty out there! Glam rock?!

  • Lemme See three Bass guitars. I suggest you out their Movie, This is Spinal Tap. Too bad their guitarrist isn't here.

  • 's spinal tap you moron

  • There's one thing people don't admit: Waters coudn't make the music alone; there are a lot of credits to be given for Gimour, and, specially on The Wall, for Bob Erzin.

But there's one thing people forget or just don't know: Waters, along Wright and Mason, but specially Waters, is the man of the great stage effects. He was a great inventor, a very creative person.

  • good comment..the music world lost out when roger and david split..They all had something special and they complimented each other musically.Roger i think lost out more cause when i listen to his music (post floyd)it seemed that spark had dimmed.Davids voice & guitar is amazing to this day-saying that i have missed roger's brilliance since the final cut.I really wish david played berlin wall with roger.Like i said the music world lost out.

  • Yeah I would actually say, from my own experiences, it can be boring to play the bass when you are use to the guitar. you job is kinda... Creating a ground melody, and most things sound crappy with no bass. :p

  • Unless you play like Cliff Burton or John Myung or Billy Sheenan.

  • Pink Floyd wrote "Dogs".

  • david gilmour played bass on sheep and pigs(3different ones).

  • Gilmour plays the bassguitar in Animals.

    For example..

    In Sheep waters sings only.

And isn't difficult for a guitarist play the bass

  • the only good thing in that video is gilmour, i dont really like the song...

  • definitely spinal tap...

  • what band is that?

  • I don´t care about who is better! It has no meaning if you really understand and fell what Pink Floyd wants to tell us!

  • Smartass.

  • I'm an educated person and I disagree with you. One of the reasons why Gilmour played bass on Hey You, Pigs and countless others was because Roger Waters couldn't manage them properly. Doesn't denigrate Waters as a songwriter, just nowhere near as competent a musician as Gilmour.

  • Gilmour also played the main bass on One of these days and so many others. Waters never considered himself a great musician and he almost got the drums by lack of skill. But he's a great lyricwriter, very awesome.

  • How many lays are u getting with that kind of square closings?

  • Comment removed

  • waters? gilmour play freetless bass on hey you. so that means gilmour better than waters.

  • spinal tap?

  • wow SPINAL TAP!

  • the neck brace ..lol

  • No way gilmour can play bass like the master i. e. R Waters.

  • guy pratt owns waters at bass

  • jus listen to money, time, breathe, and dogs basslines.. Guy Pratt will never come up with smthg like that..

  • ya must be why Gilmour played most of his bass parts during recordings.

  • in the movie spinal tab the bass player plays a double neck bass and the lead and rythem guitar players play bass too...lol.......talkin about mud flaps my girls got'em .......lol

  • that's because Dave is the master :) 'cause Roger can't play guitar like Dave :D

  • bullshit.

  • have you ever listened to the bass on pigs (three different ones)? apparently not cause maybe if u opened the ears of your fat head you would hear waters skill as a bassist

  • i never said roger can't play bass. i like how attacking and unforgiving people get to a bit of sarcasm. and then i'm the one with the fat head :D good job :)

  • Actually, Gilmour played bass on most records, especially the later ones. I count vouch for that particular piece of music, but I'm just laying it out. At the same time, I am not denying his skill on bass, because it was his style that influenced any Pink Floyd bass part.

  • I'd like to know who created the riff in One of These Days?

    Thank You.

  • Actually, Gilmour played the bass on that song.

  • spinal tap rofl

  • ?¿?¿?

  • LMFAO Floyd hadn't been Floyd for 28 years by 2005, the last Floyd album (iow not a sarcastic joke on the later lack of value of doing such a thing) was _Animals_

Music is not a sport, it's an art. And it has _much_ more to do with the mind than one's ability or dexterity as an instrumentalist. That's useful, but secondary.

Floyd produced profound landscapes and holographic imagery with music, as well as some of the most emotionally intense stuff ever.

Who cares how, you'll never be them.

  • When is this from and where???

  • xD Gilmour playing with Spinal Tap

  • Dude, I'm sitting cracking up... but it's so great it's not even funny!

    HAAAA!

  • Gilmour = Great Bassist

Just as Keith Richards did the cool Stones lines a lot of the time, DG played a lot of bass that you thank Waters for!

Check DG playing with Kate Bush too! Excellent fretless vibe...

  • I love Gilmour as a guitarist, but i think his bass skills within this video are over-rated. He plays the bass like a guitar. He just doesn't have the same feel for the rhythm section as Waters.

  • He's a really good bass player, if you listen to fat old sun, you can see that he's REALLY good. That bass fits perfectly to that song (he played the bass on that song). Nice performance here too, but i don't find him playing with spinal tap xD
