Mrs Nancy went on to help her daughter Mrs Sally run the show behind the scenes and she would play Doobee and sometimes play I thin Mrs FEather Flower.
Yes, I too grew up on Romper Room, Davey Crocket, Capt. Kangaroo, etc. Wasn't it Miss Nancy who would sing the "Bend and stretch, reach 4 the Stars, here comes Jupiter here comes Mars." thing? (seriously!)...Wonderful show. Kids shows were simpler in those days.
I was born in 55 but remember the Jack in the box at the start of the show. What I didn't know was that her husband was Bert Claster. Being from Baltimore myself, if memory serves me right it was on WMAR channel 2 tv.
Yes,I watched the original Romper Room. I grew up in Chicago and watched programs like:Romper Room,Howdy Doody,Garfield Goose and Captain Kangaroo on WGN,Channel 9. Kids had to use their imaginations. Imagine that? We had to use pencils, paper, crazyons, scissors, tape, glue etc to make things. None of this instant stuff. We went out to play. We didn't sit in front of video games, computers and other mechanical things. Do you remember your Howdy Doody chair? Still have mine. My Grandmother saved it.
I recall a Miss Connie. She was very sweet and nice Maybe I have a different show mixed up with this one but I know I watched RR quite often. Nice way for a young child to start the day back then or now.
@rivka614 Hello! Oh my ...it seems like just yesterday I was watching this show too. I watch the original Roomper Room. Did you watch the 1st original? I used to wait to see if she'd call my name out at the end of the show! I remember wanting to miss Kindergarten to watch this show. I remember telling my Mom I was sick just so I could watch this show. I didn't like cartoons, but I love Romper Room. That was the world cutest show. I only wish they had show like that these days. Smiles!
Programmed? You mean taught to behave, exercise, eat right, be good citizens and treat our fellow human beings fairly? Yeah, Romper Room "programmed" us that way! We need more "programming" from what I'm seeing!
When I was in nursery school, my classmates, teacher and I would go to a special room and watch Romper Room. I remember Miss Joan (Thayer) as the teacher.
Wow, I actually remember that black & white Magic Mirror "spinning wheel" image[1:05sec] from when I was about 4 years old. The "magic mirror" effect changed from time to time over the years as studio technology evolved, but I still remember that old B&W spinning image.
The show itself was kind of dull, but I always watched for the Magic Mirror segment at the end. I actually thought she was seeing me thru that Mirror...
@sygo7g In the Boston area, our Channel 5 (WHDH-TV) had versions of both Romper Room and Bozo. Our Romper Room hostess was Miss Jean Harrington, and her husband Bill was on the staff there. He even filled for a few episodes of Bozo (as "Nozo"). Our Bozo back then was Frank Avruch. I remember them vividly even though I was a pre-schooler at that time (early '60s).
@elc1960 Much of my moral fiber stems back to Miss Jean...oh how I remember the pretty face and the dark hair in the 1960's hairdo. Been away from Boston since the 80's but I remember Frank Avruch as the host of The Great Entertainment movies that aired on WCVB channel 5 (the successor to WHDH, which btw is it really channel 7 now?!), but I can't picture that distinguished Frank Avruch as Bozo the Clown. You've scarred me for life, elc1960.
@prestush I apologize for the emotional scars. Actually, I have an autographed photo that I received from Bozo at the Brockton MA Coats Fields store when I was about 4 or 5. It's handwritten, and it consists of his catch phrase - "Always keep laughing! - Bozo". He signed quite a few autographs that day, and was great with everyone (as I recall - hey, I was a pre-schooler at the time). I saw Major Mudd do an appearance at that same store a couple of years later, but didn't meet him.
@elc1960 Thanks for remembering Miss Jean - I had forgotten the name. I thought Miss Nancy sounded wrong. There must have been a Romper Room franchise.
@JonFrumTheFirst Yes, it was indeed franchised all over the country, and later around the world. Bert Claster (Miss Nancy's real-life husband) was the show's creator, and franchised the show almost everywhere in the US.
Dude, we had Miss Molly (Pederson) back in the early 1980's. She actually came to Long Island College Hospital, where I had an operation on my legs, in Brooklyn, New York, back in 1983, and I actually met her in person.
In December of '53, at the age of four, I was one of the children on the show, for the standard two week stint. But Miss Nancy asked my mom to have me extend for an additional two weeks, and we did. Nancy Rogers (Claster), America's predecessor to Fred Rogers of "Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood", was a GODDESS to me and probably millions of other children! She radiated goodness, beauty and light. No one is doing more today for children than the David Lynch Foundation. Visit their website DLF.TV.
I was on the show in N.Y. in 1969, with Miss Louise....Kindergarten class trip. I was more facinated with the cameras and lights more than anything else.
I tried like kell to be a Do Bee but was a Don't Bee most of the time. This show gave me inferiority complexes especially since that Nancy chick never said my name not even once. I knew I was not part of the Do Bee crowd, lol.
I'm not sure which "Romper Room" it was (was there more than 1), but I was born in 1950. I have only one faint memory of the lady from Romper Room dancing on a mat with a little girl. How odd.
Great post!!! I remember this time and this show -- we had a country full of good folks -- we never locked our doors, we never worried about the kids playing outside or anywhere in the neighborhood, the biggest "crime" we had at school one year was a kid cutting hole in someones new overshoes! Half the population today probably does not know what overshoes were! (<:
