@jojo51886 America if need be, Germany is one of the leading economic countries in Europe and do know how to hold their own but I'm not sure if they would jump to American defense either. I think if Russia were to invade America then America would ask for help from the European Union to which Russia would do the same. But to ur original question, could US defeat the Soviets? I don't think there's much debate when there's the prospect of MAD.

They also had more tanks and aircraft. They had more nuclear weapons. In reality, the Soviet Union would have curbstomped NATO in a conventional war if it was limited to Europe.
I'm sorry, I find it very hard to believe that Soviet could produce a more technologically advanced army when their economy was more or less in shambles, when every industry was centralised and there was no entrepreneurship etc. For the most part of the Cold War, the Soviets did not have more nuclear weapons, the only time that they did was during the period of detente when they were supposed to be disarming but they kept on increasing their nuclear stockpiles. That changed when detente was over

For one thing, they spent more in order to close the technological gap that existed so this is proof that more military spending=/=greater military power. For another, THEY WERE IMPLODING. HOW IS AN IMPLODING COUNTRY EVER CONCEIVABLY POWERFUL?
I think we best agree to disagree. You have immense faith in the Soviets to outlast and win the US militarily just because they spent more money. I have doubts because a)there is mutually assured destruction so the point is moot, b)US had more anti-nuclear missiles esp. during Reagan's era c)Soviet's economy was imploding meaning it can't sustain a long-term war, d) Soviet Union was imploding and fracturing, making it dubious that it will last a war that is bound to generate popular discontent.

I think if Russia were to invade America then America would ask for help from the European Union to which Russia would do the same. USA lost 16,596,639 fighting 3 fronts at the SAME TIME. In africa, europe, and the pacific, USA could have clearly beat the Soviet Union because USA was at its peak and there was no bombings in US terroritory aside from the Pacific Theater (Pearl Harbor-one exception).

The U.S arrived 2years after the Battle of Britain and when the British were winning in the West. And D-Day was 1944 and Axis were most wiped out. And it was the Soviets who fought the biggest battles of the war, and in history. Where countless millions died. What battles could the U.S even compare?? If your commander told you to run into a japenese machine gun nest you had to do it. If you ran you were killed and called a traitor so either way you die. Its inevitable to die as a russian soldier. Yes. It did. It had the largest tank (Russia still does, amusingly) and airforce throughout the Cold War. They were spending 22% of their GDP on the military. The United States was spending... 4%. They may have had double the GDP, but they were not approaching the Soviet Union throughout most of the Cold War.

Sorry, allow me to rephrase myself. Larger army or bigger military expenditure =/= greater military power, since in terms of nuclear parity and technology, Russia were lagging behind USA. Yes it's true they spent much more, but in 1962, US possessed 1200 intercontinental bombers while Russia only had 50. The Soviets only spent so much cos they were tryin to catch up. But to ur original question, could US defeat the Soviets? I don't think there's much debate when there's the prospect of MAD.

On the contrary, the Soviet Union had comparable if not superior technology in many areas. The only problem was they gave them to untrained foreign people who didn't use them efficiently. They also had more tanks and aircraft. They had more nuclear weapons. In reality, the Soviet Union would have curbstomped NATO in a conventional war if it was limited to Europe.

I'm sorry, I find it very hard to believe that Soviet could produce a more technologically advanced army when their economy was more or less in shambles, when every industry was centralised and there was no entrepreneurship etc. For the most part of the Cold War, the Soviets did not have more nuclear weapons, the only time that they did was during the period of detente when they were supposed to be disarming but they kept on increasing their nuclear stockpiles. That changed when detente was over

I'm sorry, but even in 1989 the Soviet economy was still half that of the United States, which was spending only 7% at the time. The USSR was spending 27% of its entire GDP for military alone. The US was spending an equivalent of half the Soviet budget.

In 1989, the Soviet Union was collapsing. Please explain to me how a country, regardless of how much it attempts to spend on military, has an advanced and powerful army when it is collapsing, both economically and politically. + You forget that the US devoted more time to anti-missile weaponry during Reagan's era than straight-out missiles, which is why the figures may give the impression that Soviet possesses a more powerful army. And btw, I still find this argument moot because of MAD.

1. Soviet Union was collapsing internally, therefore cannot be considered a strong military power since it would be defeated easily (if no MAD) 2.US was spreading its sphere of influence farther than the Soviets towards the 1980s onwards - Soviets were already struggling to prop up the PDPA militarily 3. US possessed technological advantages and had a better anti-missile system. Soviets definitely were advanced, but a country with a weak economy/political system can hardly be considered powerful

What is wrong with you? How many times to have to tell you this obvious fact? The Soviet Union was spending twice as much as the US on military. Both were claiming technological superiority, yet it's laughable to assume that the US was considering that they had half the budget and were less preparing to fight a war. If you still don't understand, I have no reason with talking to you.

Your "obvious fact" is an unjustified assumption. You've simply been asserting that just because the Soviets spent more on military, they by default had military superiority. I am simply pointing out that that is not necessarily the case. For one thing, they spent more in order to close the technological gap that existed so this is proof that more military spending=/=greater military power. For another, THEY WERE IMPLODING. HOW IS AN IMPLODING COUNTRY EVER CONCEIVABLY POWERFUL?

I think we best agree to disagree. You have immense faith in the Soviets to outlast and win the US militarily just because they spent more money. I have doubts because a)there is mutually assured destruction so the point is moot, b)US had more anti-nuclear missiles esp. during Reagan's era c)Soviet's economy was imploding meaning it can't sustain a long-term war, d) Soviet Union was imploding and fracturing, making it dubious that it will last a war that is bound to generate popular discontent.

@ProphetFear btw, when I say the Soviets spent more to close the gap, I meant during the period leading up to detente, not thereafter. For the rest, if you want to reply/argue further, tackle the four points I raised in my last comment and not just restate your hypothesis that Soviet's higher military expenditure = military superiority.

@W0lfabi0 Yes "nobody lost", but USA won the space race, and Soviet suffered big economical problems in the last time of the cold war, before it collapsed, the wall fell, and the different states became free. So USA came out good, while the Soviet dissappeared. Which one mights say makes USA the winner.
BTW: "Won"? If one of them had "won" the cold war in the way YOU talk about, then it wouldn't have been a "cold war" anymore. It would have been a nuclear war. Luckily that never happened.

@kilox10001 they could take us with the help of china, iran, and, well, just about every non-NATO country on earth. thing is, they'd take such heavy losses that there's no way it'd be worth it. and thanks to the 2nd amendment and video games like the ones used to make this video, in the then-former US, the russians would face something a lot like the soviet campaign in afghanistan in 1979-1989, but on an unimaginably bigger scale.
