Let's be smart about this every one who owns a mk3 7m gte go buy a MHG and torque it down to 80ftlbs if you do not have the money for some arp's MGH timing belt just torque them to 80 it doesn't blow as easily and is just the easiest and pain free way 7ms are good engines but not many know how to treat them
BTW.... eman2289 dont research anymore! Your invaluable info is making you look stupid! Get off the computer all together or just keep your comments to yourself. lmao sooooo stupid! Obviously you guy have never owned a chevy 305! That is a POS! The 7m is strong if you can put the right head gasket on it the 1st time! you go cheap your going to get what you pay for!
PART 2.. The way you get around that is by getting a better head gasket not some little cheap crap one! The 7mgte Can be a good engine for those who have never owned one of these cars! The way I know its a rod is I had the same problem only thing is YOU DONT REV IT UP LIKE THAT!!!! You might end up scaring the cylinder walls, cracking block, pistons, cams, crankshaft, everything major in the engine! If you didnt do anything to to engine your a lucky person and shows u how strong a 7m is!
lol man some people are idiots! Okay lets start with #1. The knock is a rod!!!!!!!!!!!!!! #2. They do have a head gasket problem but like we know toyota will not take fault for it kinda like they did last year with all the brake problems. it took a lot of media attention to get them to actually crack and do something, they will never do anything for a car that was made in the mid 80's to early 90's but boy is that guy wrong about the torque. ITS A FAULTY DESIGN! IDIOT!!! ... PART 1
lol at everyone that lets coolent into there oil and think a head gasket will fix it whell yah it will fix it but if you got coolent into your oil your fked and need new bearings PERIOD not just a new gasket
I had a '89 mkiii, I put in ARP headstuds fixed the head gasket problem, about 4 months later started having this exact same noise. turned out to be rod knock also. i'll never own a car with a 7MJTE again, such a POS motor. everything that can go wrong with it, will.
You guys should do some reading before talking. 7Ms are notorious for blowing head gaskets, due to an error by toyota on the head bolt torque specs. Once the headgasket starts to leak, it causes coolant to leak into the cyls/ oil, or wherever it wants to. Causing the knock. Ask any person that knows anything about these motors, and you would find that they are notorious for rod knock and BHGs.
yes they are lol ive been through 3 headgaskets on my old 7m thats not turbo though is it?? that sucks man but try putting in royal purple its just a mild knock and royal purple fixes everything lmao
Rich kids? ha. have you priced an mkiii supra at any point in your lifetime? its a 20 year old car. its probably more expensive than your sweet "jdm" civic, but its not a "rich kids" car.
blew it up....done...spun bearing is a knock u fuckin ass..thats what u get when u dont change the oil when ur suppose to..or run it in low levels....
my 7mgte is doing exactly the same since today but the most weird thing is that i have just rebuild it totally!and he keeps doing this!I've drived it about 3days smoothly and knock is back!!?why?
mate did you put new bigend shells on to the original crankshaft, the reason I ask is that I have the Supra's little brother "MR2" which had the same problem, like you I did a full rebuild of the engine, I was advised by Toyota to have the crankshaft reground otherwise the problem will come back if I had just replaced the bigend shells only, and they were right
Put a long screw driver up to the head. Put ur ear up to it and feel if the vibration gets worse when u rev it. If it does than its in the head if not try the bottom end. If it is rod knock some people can actually use this technique to tell you which rod it is.
next tme just plz shut off the engine theres no need to rev it and ruin the block like that.

sounds painful =\
and to those saying swap for 2jz or 7m=fail
first off the only issue with 7m's is the headgasket, once thats taken care of its a hell of a motor, with great potential
almost everyone gets off on the wrong foot with their 7m, but if youre patient enough to start over, you'll sure as hell be glad you didnt swap

So what caused the problem? Cause I have the Supra's other little brother, the Celica and its got the same noise, so is it like a spun bearing?
