the weight of a rocket is so important for how high it can go, that's why sounding rockets are very thin, but still they can't go very higher than 30 miles (the weather balloons limit)

as you can see the trajectory is curved

after 3 minutes its only a few miles high and already the enormous boosters are empty

how long do you think the little tank of the shuttle will last to reach the low stratosphere at about 7 miles in altitude, and how fast will it reach there if the trajectory is so curved

this means that after 3 more minutes the shuttle is still in the troposphere and will never go out of it
